1489.0. "Fishing the rivers at Ontario" by SA1794::PARKERJ () Tue Sep 04 1990 14:19

I've read a lot about trolling for trout, salmon in Ontario but
hardly anything about river fishing (drifting, wading). I'd like
to go this year with my son and could use some advise as to rods,
reels and lures needed to fish the rivers. Any motels on the river
    bank?

    Yo Jim,

I will be in Pulaski in two weeks! I can't wait. This will be
my first time also. Oh a virgin.. My buddy just got back Monday and
hooked into a nice 26lb chinook. He said that a few small runs have
already made there way into the river. I can't wait until the bigger
runs head in. We are using 7' to 8' foot rods- Ugly Sticks, they dont
break! We will be using 20lb test with two foot leaders. Be prepared to
use alot of line, the fish tend to run and snap line big time. Also
make sure that your leaders are 24" or longer, if not it could cost
you a trip to the local court room.

Have fun and watch out when wading deep- they lose about 5-10 people a
    year.

1489.5I hooked up!SENIOR::PENNINGTue Oct 09 1990 13:3711

    Jim,

Well my first trip to Pulaski was a success. I hooked my first
King ever. My GOD are these fish strong. I hooked up with at least
ten and landed only one. But it was a 25lb male. What a fight!!
These fish were snapping line like it was going out of style. I guess
the key was to fight them up and down the river for a half hour. It
was great trip, alot of people, but I will definetly go back!

    ************************************************************************
this note is for a word of caution to all the fisher people who
are planning on coming out here in the next few weeks to fish the
    rivers.
    ************************************************************************

due to extensive rains, 2 quick thaws, and 17 hrs of freezing rain
in the last couple weeks the rivers are running extreemly high, they
have been running 2 gates 12 hrs a day at niagra mohawk on the salmon
river to help stay away from severe flood conditions.

I was at the oswego river sat 3-9-91 and the islands along 481 from
fulton to oswego that are in the river are totally underwater. the
fishing in the oswego river is non existant now.

It would be my recomendation to call in advance to find out the
conditions before you drive out here and waste your money because you
    cant fish.

Good luck to those who do come out fishing.

The boat will be out on lake O very soon I hope................
