1454.0. ""Too Many FISH!!!"" by SENIOR::PENNING () Mon Jul 16 1990 11:35

    I just want to let you guys know about the slow weekend we had
    fishing. Between my buddy and I we caught and realeased at least
    200 bass in the last two days. The lake we are fishing is a private
    lake and is way "UNDER" fished. We were catching bucketmouths anywhere
    from 5lbs to 6 inches. Most of the fish we caught were in the 8" to 15"
    catagory. It seems to me that the fish could get much bigger if there
    wasn't so many. The guy who owns the lake say's he put 150 tiger muskie
    in it this Spring to help clean up some of the smaller fish and let the
    bigger ones get bigger. I didn't see any signs of muskie and still
    thousands of real small (2 to 3 inch) bass, so it seems like that he
    did not yet put the muskie's in. Is this a good way to handle the
    problem of too many fish- put in bigger more aggresive fish? I would
    think so. Should I transfer a few good size pickeral in there?? I know
    it is illegal, but so is fishing this lake.

    What do you think??

    Wildman,

        I think if you tell me the name/location of this lake I can help.

        If it's a private lake do you fish it by permission?

        What about a 'catch and kill' tourney (surely I jest =) )

1454.2Don't mess with it.DNEAST::OKERHOLM_PAUMon Jul 16 1990 12:2015
	Don't put anything in there!!!!

	If its a private pond its the owner's right to maintain the fish
HE WANTS in it. Once you put something in there the only way to get them
out is to poison the whole pond and restock. If I owned a pond and found
out someone stocked something in there without my permission I'd be mighty
angry.

	What you should do is keep the fish, particularly the small ones
(with permission of course). Many years ago I fished some farm ponds in
Iowa. The only instruction I got from the farmers was "don't release anything".
They knew the ponds were over populated and wanted some taken out. Of course
I obliged.

1454.3"Maybe a catch and keep all tourney"SENIOR::PENNINGMon Jul 16 1990 12:2312

    I should have noted that this is a "by permission only" lake and yes
    I do have permission. I was thinking of a catch and keep all type deal,
    I know he did this 4 years ago and people were leaving with 33 gallon
    rubbish barrels full to the top! This is also the cleanest lake I have
    ever seen! Maybe I can speak to the land owner and see if he would
    allow a few guys in for say half a day!

    I will keep you posted- just like the lake POSTED!

    Wildman- who used two bags of black culprit worms in 6 hours!
1454.4What is this, 20 questions??SALEM::EASTERMon Jul 16 1990 13:576
    What town/state is this in?? How big is this body of water?? What
    depths and structure exist?? And, what kind of access exist?? I
    know a guy that may accept some fish for transplanting efforts.

1454.5Legend to the rescue!XCUSME::WATERSThe Legend of the LakesMon Jul 16 1990 14:1616
    Okay, okay...I can read the writing on the wall.

    You don't have to hit the Legend of the head with a 2x4 (although,
    some of you would jump at the chance) to figure out what your asking.

    Give the owner of the pond my 800#.....1-800-1LE-GEND.

    This guy is in desperate need of the Legend of the Lakes.

    From the sounds of this place, I'll bet Easter and Bourgault would even
    catch A fish.

    Have you considered dynamite ;-)?!

1454.6Supposed reason for stocking tiger muskiesVICKI::DODIERFood for thought makes me hungryMon Jul 16 1990 15:0414
    re:Tiger Muskies

    	Supposedly this is what Haverhill put in Kenoza Lake (which is one
    of their water supplies) to handle the fish over population problem.
    This is also posted no fishing.

    	From what I was told (and never verified) is that the tiger muskie
    is a cross breed which results in a sterile fish. That way they can eat
    other fish and not produce new ones.

    	If this is true, tiger muskies would be a good idea for fish
    control but pickeral would definitely not be.

    I am sure if you put the location of the pond and get the ok from the
    owner to have a 1 day fishing derby there with all these notes readers
    we could help clean up this pond..
1454.8I'll Ask but I can't promise..SENIOR::PENNINGMon Jul 16 1990 15:4833

    Yo Guys,

         I really can't say where this lake is. I dont feel comfortable
    knowing how strickly this place is monitored. There is no type of
    boat ramp, but there are small paths to carry a boat. I know I have
    gotten everyone excited because this place is just so incredible.
    I would not want to tell you guys where it is, get you out there have
    the time of your life and then find out your car has been towed and the
    nearest phone is 10 miles away. I will approach the land owner and ask
    him that a well monitored, eletric motor only type tourney be allowed.
    Hey I would even like to have him join us. He is just so damn parinoid
    about the "lower class" citizens taking the place over. They did at one
    point and he snapped and hired a guy to do nothing but shoot rock salt
    at trespassers. I know because I got a butt full back when I was there
    and did not have permission.

    The tigermuskie were or will be introduced because they do not spawn
    and they are at the very top of the food chain. He just asked me if I
    hook one to put it back because they are expensive.

    I really shouldn't talk about the ice-fishing there either because
    thats not fair. I'll just say that before you set up your second tilt
    your first one will have gone off.

    I'll see what I can do, as long as we respect this awsome piece of
    property we should be all set. But he is pretty tough about who fishes
    there.

    I will try and visit him some time this week.

1454.10One ponds loss, another ponds gain.MYTPAK::ROSINSKITue Jul 17 1990 09:5823
    Wow! This sounds too good to be true. You might even be able to
    convince an amateur like me to enter a tournament like this. Greatly
    reduces the odds of my being humiliated and harassed for not catching
    anything.

    I think someone a few replies back hit on a great idea, a Catch &
    Transplant Tournament. I spoke with someone from the Mass. Fisheries &
    Wildlife Department last summer about stocking a pond. He said that
    the biggest problem they have with stocking warm, low oxygen type
    waters, is finding the fish for stocking, and of course paying for
    them. With the state's current budget problems, I doubt the latter
    problem has improved any.

    Perhaps if the F&W Dept. were interested, they would supply a truck,
    and knowledgable personnel to assist in a transplanting operation. We
    could help more than one fishing site, and perhaps even have a few left
    over to take home.

    How am I going to be able to concentrate on work now?

1454.11Gill nets are like snag fishing!!!SALEM::EASTERTue Jul 17 1990 13:5813
    Hey lizard, how you going to make sure you can catch a bass in that
    pond, drag a gill net behind the lizard-mobile??? I'll bet you even
    have paid someone living on Pawtuckaway catching fish this week
    and pining them up just so you and your partner can weigh in 10
    fish. But thats OK, I'll just notify some of my friends at F&G and
    Dept. of Safety and have them hound you for six hours.

    If the Battlestar isn't ready then we'll be in Bourgault's Shuttle
    Craft.

    What's the latest on this place?? I've found a good home for some
    of those bass and I'am sure they would be happy there.

1454.14fishing was good this weekendRANGER::MACINTYRETerminal AnglerMon Aug 27 1990 13:1335
    Yesterday afternoon my neighbor brought me to a pond on the grounds of
    his place of work. I'm not going to mention where it is since they have
    closed gates and security guards and I do not want to enourage any
    trespassing. Since he works there we were able to drive right in and
    drop a canoe in.

    I have no idea how many bass we caught. 100, 150, more? They were all
    about 10 inches. Another case of stunted bass. It was *too* easy (but
    a heck of alot of fun!)

    I would move us out of places where the bass were boated every other
    cast to places where I'd hope to catch crappie. I wound with 6
    crappie, a couple of them were real SLABS (supper tonight).

    I might as well confess (and brag at the same time) about Saturday's
    fishing as well. We had a NHB tournament on the Merrimack in Hooksett.
    The fishing was slow for everyone. However, I found feeder creek where
    the smallies where stacked right up.

    I broke off next to the boat what may have been the 5+lb smallie mount
    that I have been seeking for the last 5 year. It jumped once. BIG fish.
    When I had it next to the boat, it burrowed down into some weeds. SNAP
    goes my 8lb test. 2 minutes last, I hook another fish, it ran right at
    me, I tried to swing it into the boat, UH OH, didn't realize it was a
    3+lber, SNAP goes my 8lb test.

    At this point I only had two small keepers in the boat and had just
    lost possibly 7+lbs of fish! Time to switch to a rod with 12lb test.

    I wound catching 7 more keepers in this one spot which was enough to
    win the tourny, but I still can't believe I lost that big fish -
    especially during a tournament!

    donmac - who just might stick to a min. of 12lb test during tournaments
             from now on...
