1450.0. "DEC-WEST FISHING DERBY" by DECWET::SEVERNS () Thu Jul 05 1990 18:25

    I have been reading all the notes on the fishing tournements back in NH
    and Ma, and thought that maybe if anyone out here is interested we
    could have one of our own so all this fishermen from back east can read
    about how terrible the fishing is out here.

    I have already sent for the application from F/G and all we have have
    to do is decide on the date and the place. (The place will be easier
    than the date because of all the RAIN and other nasty weather STUFF
    That keeps this part of the country so Unpopular.)

    Jerry.

    If someone from over there can send me a outline of your tourny rules
    and how you run it I would be very thankful. you can reach me at
    DECWET::SEVERNS.

    If anyone from NH or Ma would like to attend your are more than
    welcome.

    I have checked with Many local experts and it seems that a Salmon
    tournent would be are best bet.

    If intertested parties would reply to this note and give suggested
    dates and areas we can get the ball rolling, bait cut, spinner spinning
    Whatever.

1450.2A far long weekend?SCARGO::HAGERTYJack Hagerty KI1XMon Jul 09 1990 14:3912
    Yo -- Bandit. You paying attention? This is not that bad an idea.
    Considering how long it takes to drive to Pulaski, NY - a plane ride to
    the West aint that bad an idea. With all our stuff how many seats you
    think we will need? "Sir, your seats are One and Two, Three and four.
    Maybe you can go Air Freight with your stuff.
    We dont need Goretex. Well not the cold weather Goretex. Dont neeed all
    the wool fingerless gloves, thermax, polypros, boots. We COULD do it.
    Hardest thing to paack would be rods and waders. OK -- Ill buy new pair
    of Neoprenes out there. Think of all the new 'bum' bars. Ill bet its
    where all the steelhead lures spawn. Bandit you there. you with me?
    Its just a hobby.

     Yeah, but I'd probably have to get rid of (as the yuppies say) my
    "significant other...". She already beefed when I told her I was going
    to Scotland next year for golf. Maybe I should just disappear, show up
    in 10 days and tell her (as The DiceMan would say) "I was havin' coffee
    wit' da guys...".
     At some point, the NorthWest is definitely in my future. Love those
    cold "Oly's"!! I'd recommend some 5mm boot foot "Streamline" neoprenes
    - the Cadillac of cold weather waders, as you know.
     Hey, we could pack light, buy a ton of stuff out there - the
    possibilities are limitless. Now, about Montana...

    Skoal, Brother....

1450.4Sounds good....RIPPLE::CORBETTKEKENNY CHINOOKTue Jul 10 1990 15:3920
    I think it's a great idea.

    I'm getting tired of hearing about those East Coast "minners" they
    brag about.

    Puget Sound is still within my reach now, but in mid August I'm
    moving to Eugene to set up a marketing office there, so that trip
    would take more planning. I know someone in Seattle who would love
    to go, so if a date can be worked out, count us in.

    BTW. There's also bottom fishing, crabbing, steelhead, etc. to
    consider.

1450.5one from the westDECWET::SEVERNSTue Jul 10 1990 16:1818
    Hello  Ken

    nice to here from someone on this end of the wire. The other response
    was in my mail from Brett and he suggested a Salmon tournament so that
    is what I am looking at. but the replies are few and far between so far
    a total of 3 from the west and two from the east. If you have any
    special place and date go ahead and post it. that way we have
    something to work with.

    Ken I myself am a BEGINNER trout fisherman who hates to fish alone so I
    will go with whatever the majority wants.

    in .4 you said you are going to be in Eugene. Are you moving or just
    going for a couple of weeks?

1450.6Going to move....RIPPLE::CORBETTKEKENNY CHINOOKTue Jul 10 1990 18:4635
    Jerry,

    I am moving. We are finally going to do some expansion in this
    area. This is my home state, 40+ years, so I'm familiar enough
    to have a good idea where the business might be. So, they've got
    me down here to see what business we can spook up.

     Obviously, the biggest concentration of fisherman should be around the
    Seattle area, so the derby should be concentrated around that area. I have
    towed my boat up to the Sound on occasion, but I would need some
    notice to make that run now.

    I've been fishing in the ocean now for a couple of weekends, but
    the heavy salmon run hasn't started yet. Saturday I got caught
    out in it when a Northwestern wind came up (this is not unusual
    for this weather, this time of year, so I should have known better),
    and had a rough time getting back inside. Lot of water over the
    bow and the banging around jarred some electronics out of their
    stays, broke the latches on the forward hatch, and the port-a-potty
    came out of the cabin a slid across the deck - didn't spill a drop.
    So, this weekend is repair time, but maybe I'll find time for a
    Sunday trip.

    Anyway, due to the geographies of the situation, I suggest you and
    Brett work something out and I'll try to fit in. I would like to
    meet all of you and I do enjoy fishing for salmon in the Sound.
    My friend from up there is on the Boeing account (cakewalk), so
    he has lots of free time.

    Ken

1450.7Let's get this movingDECWET::HELSELLegitimate sporting purposeWed Jul 11 1990 14:5524
    As for the Easterners with the waders, you better bring long ones
    because we'll likely be fishing in 200 feet of water. The year round
    water temp is about 53 degrees if it helps you decide which waders to
    bring.

    I just caught my biggest salmon last week; 30 lbs. Bill Hilton topped
    me though with a 37 lber. For the Lake O fishermen that think these
    aren't big, they are if you have a commercial fishery to compete with.

    I think we could scare up a few fisherman for this.....Gordon
    Lewandowski, Mike Peterson, Bill Hilton, and some others in the
    "Fishing the Northwest" note signed in and said they'd like to compete.
    You might want to send all of these people mail. Then there are the
    locals that don't have boats but would fish. My recomendation would be
    to have the tourny before August while the kings are running. Then
    anyone could go to Point No Point and rent a boat for a reasonable
    price and have a good shot at mooching a big king. To pick a date, I'd
    suggest looking at a tide chart and picking a day when there is a
    morning (7-9 AM) high tide so everyone can fish the outgoing tide.

    Ken, you've been threatening to show us how for a long time. I'm
    looking forward to the opportunity to watch a pro!

1450.8lets nail down a date.DECWET::SEVERNSWed Jul 11 1990 18:0113
    "Sounds" good to me Brett how does the saturday the the 28th of july
    sound? That is my only free weekend for the month of July you can
    almost call it August. If you could Brett could you nail down the tides
    for me if you have a tide book handy. That way we can set the date now
    and get on the way.

    I still have not gotten any word from the state about what we can and
    cannot do for a tourney. so maybe this one we should just classifie as
    some "Dudes" out fishing who just happen to work for the same company
    and if it goes over well we can get legal on the next one.

    Jerry.

1450.9TidesDECWET::HELSELLegitimate sporting purposeThu Jul 12 1990 13:3711
    In my experience with the State of Washington I find that they don't
    really give a hoot what you do as long as you have a punchcard and
    stick to the limit. Based on the simple rules that we can post here,
    we are just a few guys fishing who with an interest in catching bigger
    fish than the other guys around. That will be tough to nail us on in
    court! (assuming we were breaking a law which we're not)

    The high tide on July 28th for the Seattle region is 10:46 AM. It's
    not ideal, but it is a big black dot. Low tide is just after 3:00 AM.

1450.1028th JULYDECWET::SEVERNSThu Jul 12 1990 13:5824
    The date is set for the 28th July. right now there is no start time
    and the weigh in will be at the Kingston marina.

    so far these are the people from the west that can make it

    helsel
    severns
    edry
    peterson
    faron
    saslow    maybe
    baker     maybe
    ken

    some of the people listed do not have boats. so if you will be there
    let me now if you do or don't and if you have any room for those who
    don't. I am looking for boat rental places in the area that will rent
    for reasonable price and will post it later.

    If our friends from the east Jack and Bandit will be able to make it
    let use no.

    jerry.
