1443.0. "Merrimack River Canoe Trips" by BOGGLE::THOMPSEN (Dave @ZKO, dtn 381-1365) Fri Jun 22 1990 19:24

    {this note has been cross-posted in NEW_HAMPSHIRE, FISHING, RIVERRAT,
    and ENVIRONMENTAL_ISSUES}

                       Merrimack on the Merrimack

                       The 1990 Canoe Trips on the
                             Merrimack River

    Four canoe trips have been scheduled on the Merrimack River between
    Manchester and Nashua for the upcoming season. All of these trips are
    being sponsored by the local Merrimack River Watershed Council group,
    the Merrimack Conservation Commission, and the Merrimack Parks &
    Recreation Committee. This will be the sixth year for the trips.

    All of the trips will be on a Saturday, and they will go rain or shine.
    We plan to launch at 10:00 am; please plan to arrive at the meeting
    place for each trip shortly after 9:00 in order to shuttle vehicles to
    the take-out.

    The first event, on Saturday, June 30, will be in honor of American
    Rivers Month. It will be a smoothwater trip. The put-in will be the new
    public access in Reeds Ferry at the end of Depot St. (next to Reeds
    Ferry Market) just of Rt. 3 and the take-out will be the public access
    at Greely Park in Nashua. This trip will include Cromwell's Falls, the
    site of the original settlement in Merrimack and the site of the
    best-preserved lock and canal on the river. Historian Chuck Mower will
    be one of the tripleaders and will explain the significance of the
    sites along the river both at lunch and while we're drifting along.
    This trip is for anyone who has a canoe and is interested in getting
    out on a beautiful river from 10am until about 3pm.

    The second trip will be on Saturday, July 21. This trip will be a mild
    whitewater trip (Class 2-), but it doesn't require any prior whitewater
    experience, just familiarity with a canoe for at least one of the
    paddlers in each canoe. We will begin at Goff's falls in Bedford and
    take out at the mouth of the Souhegan River in Merrimack. The put-in is
    at the end of Moore's Crossing Road, which is on the East Side of Rt. 3
    across from the Frederickflow Corp. in Bedford just north of the
    Merrimack line.

    The third trip will be on Saturday, August 18. This will be a Class 2+
    whitewater trip for the more adventurous. We will put in at Stark
    Landing, the new public boat ramp at the end of South Commercial St. in
    Manchester (near Service Merchandise), and take out at the new public
    access on Depot St. in Reeds Ferry in Merrimack. Participants should
    have some experience in canoeing and/or successful completion of the
    previous trip before attempting this one. The biggest drop is a ledge
    under the Rt. 293 bridge that you have probably seen when you've driven
    east over the bridge. We expect a canoe or two may tip over at this
    spot, but that's part of the fun!

    The Fall Foliage Trip, on October 6, will be a slight variation of our
    first trip. We will take out at Greely Park in Nashua, but we will
    begin at Thornton's Ferry instead of Reeds Ferry. The put-in will be at
    the end of Greely St. behind Medallion Center/Thornton's Landing.

    At lunchtime, interesting information about the Merrimack River will be
    presented. Some of our ideas are the history/archaeology of the river,
    the New Hampshire Heritage Trail project, the Atlantic Salmon
    restoration project - we're open to other suggestions too.

    Lifejackets (PFD's) are required, and you should know how to swim.
    Bring a lunch as we will stop at a scenic spot along the river. You
    might also want to bring a hat, suntan lotion, a camera (in a dry bag),
    rope to tie stuff into the canoe, and dry clothes just in case. As
    usual, a smile is required for everyone!

    We'll meet at the appropriate put-in around 9am to set up our shuttles;
    we plan to to get out on the river by 10am for all trips. The first and
    last (June and October) trips will end about 3pm; the others will end
    about 2pm. There is no charge for any of these trips. There will be no
    preregistration. You may get information by calling tripleader George
    May at (603) 883-3409 anytime prior to the trip (or send e-mail to Dave
    Thompsen at SQM::THOMPSEN). Participants are responsible for getting
    their own canoes and equipment.

    See you on the river!

1443.1Trip #2 this Saturday July 21BOGGLE::THOMPSENDave @ZKO, dtn 381-1365Tue Jul 17 1990 11:437
   This is a reminder that the 2nd Merrimack River canoe trip of the 1990
   season will be THIS SATURDAY at 10:00 am. It is a mild whitewater run
   (class 2-) from Moore's Falls Crossing in Bedford to Thornton's Ferry
   in Merrimack. Our first trip was a lot of fun - 19 canoes with over 40
   people enjoyed a beautiful day on the Merrimack River. I was glad to meet
   some folks from DEC there - come on out and join us! See the base note
   for details.
1443.2Trip #3 this Saturday Aug 18BOGGLE::THOMPSENDave @ZKO, dtn 381-1365Mon Aug 13 1990 14:0813
   This is a reminder that the 3rd Merrimack River canoe trip of the 1990
   season will be THIS SATURDAY at 9:00 am. It is a more challenging
   Class 2+ whitewater run from Stark Landing in Manchester to Depot Street
   in Merrimack. See the base note for details.

   Note that last week's heavy rains should make this trip pretty exciting,
   to say the least. Be prepared to get wet! You should know how to swim and
   have some basic canoeing skills to participate in this trip. If you don't
   feel comfortable with a little whitewater, don't despair - join us for
   our Fall Foliage smoothwater trip in October!

   We had a great turnout on our July trip - 36 canoes! Come on out and
   join the party!
1443.3Final canoe trip this Saturday Oct 6!BOGGLE::THOMPSENDave @ZKO, dtn 381-1365Mon Oct 01 1990 14:2222
   This is a reminder that the 4th and FINAL Merrimack River canoe trip of
   the 1990 season will be THIS SATURDAY at 9:00 am. This is a smoothwater
   trip suitable for canoeists of all abilities. We'll be doing the stretch
   of river from Thornton's Landing in Merrimack to Greely Park in
   Nashua. There should be some beautiful fall foliage colors along the
   river - maybe not peak, but they do tend to turn a little earlier along
   the river. Refer to the base note for details.

   As an update on the last canoe trip in August, the previous week's heavy
   rains brought the water level up substantially for late summer - we all
   had a blast! The trip started at Stark Landing in Manchester and ended at
   the mouth of Souhegan River in Merrimack (the planned Depot St take-out
   was scratched due to high water). Of the 17 canoes on this more
   challenging trip, we had 4 canoes tip over in the first set of rapids,
   and 3 tip over in the 2nd set - all were safe and enjoyed the swim! At
   lunch, tripleader George May showed off a little of his whitewater
   kayaking form in some standing waves at Goff's Falls. We also had the
   opportunity to speak with Ralph Goodno, the new executive director of
   the Merrimack River Watershed Council, about some of the concerns and
   hopes we have for our stretch of the river. We're all looking forward to
   our season finale in October! See you on the river!

               The 1991 Canoe Trips on the Merrimack River

    Five canoe trips have been scheduled on the Souhegan and Merrimack
    Rivers this year. All of these trips are being sponsored by the
    Merrimack River Watershed Council, the Merrimack Conservation
    Commission, and the Merrimack Parks & Recreation Committee.

    LIFE JACKET, and bag lunch. No registration is necessary. All of the
    trips will be on a Saturday, and they will go rain or shine. We plan to

1443.5Your chance to get a boat ramp on the MerrimackBOGGLE::THOMPSENDave @ZKO, dtn 381-1365Tue May 14 1991 13:0221
    Fellow anglers living in Merrimack, NH and who plan to be at town
    meeting this Thursday may want to vote YES on article 18. This article
    will appropriate the funds necessary to build a boat ramp at Depot
    Street in north Merrimack on the Merrimack River. This site, the only
    public launch between Manchester and Nashua, is now severely eroded and
    unsafe.

    Although the railroad culvert it passes through restricts
    access to pedestrians and small boats (cars are too big to pass
    through), it still presents a great location to provide people with
    access to the river for hiking, fishing, and canoeing.

    This project is supported by the Merrimack Conservation Commission,
    Merrimack Board of Selectmen, the Town Manager, and the Budget
    Committee. The bottom line is the project is already 80% funded: we
    received a $25,000 federal grant (the project won 1st place in the NH
    awards competition) and we received a $15,000 donation from
    Anheuser-Busch. The federal grant requires the town match the amount,
    so we are asking the taxpayers to ante up the remaining $10,000.

    For more info, see our display at the town meeting. Vote yes on 18!

	 out of it! I swear! I just picked it up at the Paperama store in
