1423.0. "Photograph and Release" by TOMCAT::PRESTON (A cat... in the rat race of life) Wed May 23 1990 16:28

Just thought I'd interject here that Kodak has come out with a
WATERPROOF (to 8 feet) disposable camera that sounds like it would be
ideal for keeping in the boat for snapshots of your lunkers! You just
buy the whole thing, use it like a regular camera, then turn in the
whole thing for processing when you've taken all your shots. It's new,
so I don't know how much they are, but I'm sure it costs less than
dropping your Nikon in the lake!

A guy on the deep-sea party boat I was on a couple of weeks ago
had I think a Fuji disposible camera, and he was taking all kinds \
of shots of his fish/friends/etc. He said the pix come out great,
and like you say there's no major concern if you drop it overboard
('cept for the picture of that lunker ;-)

I read a review recently of the Kodak disposable waterproof. The price
I think was $15 - I don't think that included processing. The pictures
were of decent quality but the photographer could not tell when the
"button" was depressed and whether he had taken a picture or not unless
he tried to rewind. For posed shots that's ok but those once in a
lifetime action shots are in serious jeopardy.

    I'd pass

Kmart has the underwater camera for $8.95 . Mr. Moderator could
we have these replies about the camera move to a note of their
own? (Just to keep things in line with the base note.)

Has anyone checked out the camara, called BASS yet, it's
an instamatic an i've seen it in between one of the B.Master
shows it is NOT DISPOSABLE, blue in color but must have a nice
green tag to go with it. actually it was hank parker doing a
snapshot and release camera commercial and i never got to call
on a price, but should have the number written down somewhere.
I dont recall even seeing it in the BP catolog. well gotta go

You may have seen the new promotion, they call it CPR - Catch,
Photograph and Release. I guess they think that a camera with the word
"BASS" on it will make fishermen run out and buy it. The only advantage
I can see is that you can get the picture before you let the fish go.
My problem is that it's always someone else taking the picture, and I
have no control over the end result. My father-in-law took the picture
of me holding the biggest bass I ever caught, and managed to make it look
smaller than it really was and cut off the top of my head as well!

My wife does the best job ('cause she takes coaching well), and will do
pretty well with a little more practice.

Ed, with as much time as you've spent in this notes file, you must have
lost your head to leave a lead in line like this in here ;-)

Let's not forget the environment we are out there enjoying while were
fishing. These single use "disposable" cameras are made of plastic and
laminates that head straight from the photo processer to the landfill.

I take a camera along for just this purpose. It is a water resistant
(good to 10 ft depth), 35 mm, with built in flash. It is bright
yellow, and floats, in case you accidently drop it overboard. Now it
cost something like $150.00, but look at it this way:

It costs marginally more than the regular pocket 35mm camera which
most people own today, say $30.00.

It is a high quality camera, which can be used for any type of
photography needs. It has flash, motor drive, close-up lens, and
all the other features you expect from a quality camera. What do
you do with the diposable, when its dusk? When the sun is behind
your subject? When your subject's at the other end of a 16' boat.
When you want to fire off successive pictures of your subject being
impaled while trying to remove the hook from an uncooperative
    	Pickerel?

With proper care, it will last indefinitely.

When you're taking jr.'s picture, and he power-barfs in your face,
you can simply wash the camera off.

You didn't think twice about spending more money than that on your,
boat, motor, depth gauge, fish finder, rods, reels, etc., etc.,...

There are cheaper ways to go that are more environmentally palatable:

Some companies make little hard plasic cases, which you can put a
your regular camera into to make it waterproof.

Any canoe/rafting supply store should have watertight gear bags
which you can keep a camera in until you need it. Some of these
bags have inflatable compartments, which provide protection from
    	shocks, as well as floatation.

    Happy Trails...

The "power barfs" cracked me up as well 8^) my son went thru a power barfing
stage not too long ago... 8^)

For someone who wants a descent camera to take along on the boat, I'd
also reccomend the type Al described, I know Minolta makes one.

The new high quality auto focus 35mm instamatics are great for quick shots
but most are not waterproof - or even weatherproof. I bought one for my wife
awhile back, so she wouldn't have to mess with focusing the standard 35mm for
quick shots of our son.

One day last spring I said, "where's the camera, I'm going to go catch a Hawg!"
and did! I was able to photograph and release a 24" 7lb 12oz largemouth!
(there's an 8"x10" on my desk 8^) I even took a picture of the digital
readout on the normark scale!

Unfortunately I also decided to take it on a canoe/fishing trip. The camera
got damp during the trip and gave up the ghost. Eventually I was able to
convice the manufacturer to replace the camera. But I sure wish I bought
the waterproof one instead.

One of the BASS clubs I belong to, got one donated for a raffle this
year. (The Polaroid BASS camera). It's basically the old land camera
painted blue. It's retail cost is apprx $89.99
