Conference wahoo::fishing

    I did some deepsea fishing in may about 12 years ago.  about 20 -30
    miles NW of Portland Oregon caught a few fish but nothing too brag
    about.  sure did enjoy the trip.  hope you have fun and good luck.

	I went out last friday (May 4th) out of Hilton's in Newburyport.
	Originally had reservations for Clipper Fleet across the
	river, but they didn't have enough people (only 9) to go out.
	There were about 40 people on the 90' Hilton boat.

	The Hilton's trip was very good.  They say they have the fastest party
	boat, and it did seem to fly!   

	I caught about 20 cod on jigs... biggest about 6lbs.   Some fish 
	were caught with bait and others on the pink shrimp-like lures.   
	I think a 16 lb. wolffish won the boat pool.

    A monkfish is a goosefish which is in the angler family. It is a
    bottom dweller that has a big head with a big mouth and teeth that
    tapers to a smallish tail. The meat from the tail is suppossed to
    be delicious. I saw a 30lber come up one time, it made a wolffish
    look good!

    I agree -- they are UGGGGGLY! They are covered with spines and slime.
    They sometimes bury themselves in the mud at the bottom and let their
    antenna swing in the current. It looks like something good to eat and
    when the prey come by, they inhale it into that gigantic mouth. I've
    heard that fishermen have removed whole seagulls from their stomachs.
    
    The small fillet from their tail is pretty good eating, but (I think)
    somewhat overrated.

    You can imagine what these ugly fish look like under water. As a
    diver, I see quite abit of the wolf fish....kinda reminds me of
    an underwater pitbull.

    I'm looking for a deep sea party boat in the NH seacoast area that 
    has begun running the evening trips.  A few friends and I were all
    set to go with Al Gauron out of Hampton Beach tomorrow night.  One
    of the guys just called to check on the time, and was told that no
    one in the area runs the evening trips until late June.
    
    Any other recommendations, or are we stuck with waiting a few more
    weeks?

    If you are prepared to drive an extra 30 mins the the Bunny Clark out
    of Ogunquit runs trips starting at 4:00pm most days.

    Call them at 207-646-5575 for details.

    Capt. Tim runs a great boat. My self and 3 friends went out for a day
    trip in early May and had a great day - lots of fish.

    	I use my own boat so I can't speak from first hand experience but
    the Bunny Clark has an excellent reputation in Maine. She seem to find
    fish when others can't.

    Thanks for the last couple of replies.  I've been out with Captain
    Tim on the Bunny Clark twice in the past and would also highly
    recommend him.  Unfortunately, Ogunquit is a bit far for what we're
    trying to do.  We've got several guys all coming from different
    directions after work, trying to get together for a few hours of
    fishing.  Some from as far as Worcester.  That's why I had hoped to
    find something in the Hampton or Seabrook area.
    
    I guess our options for evening fishing right now are to wait a few 
    more weeks 'til they start in Hampton, or leave work a bit earlier 
    and make the trip up to Maine.  What about the Plum Island area, can 
    anyone recommend a good party boat in that area that may be running
    evening cruises?

    I believe the Victor E III does night blue fishing.  It is located at
    Hilton's fishing dock.  The captains fishing parties on Plum Island
    also goes out evenings.  Sorry I can't help with telephone numbers or
    recommendations.  I haven't been out with them or know anyone who has.
    I have seen them leaving the river in the evening.

    	Probably anyone listed in the previous reply from yours (.13) can
    get you fish.
    
    	Fishing is not really an exact science. Any one of those fleets
    listed can have a good day or a bad one. As a rule though (and as other
    notes point out), the bottom fishing has pretty much wound down by the
    end of June and it's time to start going after Bluefish. Not the best
    eating fish but fun to catch. 
    
    	Prime bottom fishing starts as early as you can get out (March ?) and 
    ends sometime in June (depending on how fast the water warms up). After it
    warms up, the dogfish move in. After that, the bottom fishing probably
    won't start getting good again until sometime in late Sept. or beyond,
    unless you like dogfish.
    
    	Of the fleets listed, I believe Hiltons has the fastest boat which
    probably doesn't mean much if the blues are in close.

    The boats that go out to Jefferies Ledge seem to get fish all year. 
    The water is deeper that stellwagon therefore cooler, sometimes 200-300
    feet.  That means a full day boat form Newburyport and north would be
    your best bet.
