1405.0. "Silver spoons for soup?" by DELNI::OTA () Wed May 09 1990 14:06

Well my brother and I were fishing in some very heavy weed and lily pad
areas without much luck. My spinnerbaits kept coming in weeded up and
doing topwaters was just an excercise in pulling out lily pads. Well
my brother reaches into his tackle box and pulls out this Johnson Silver
Spoon which he had pulled the weed guard up and the bent the hook out
and added a split tail rubber trailer. Two casts into the soup and
wham a 1.5-2.0 largemouth. This combo works pretty good. I haven't seen
any notes on spoons, don't rightly know what kind of bait one calls this
    I don't consider this a crankbait or a topwater so I figuired I'll
enter this note. DonMac if this one exists elsewhere feel free to move
me and let me know where it is.

Anyone else try this or have luck with similar kinds ie Strike Kings
    Timber Spin?

    thanks

The Johnson Silver Spoon is a classic. It's been around longer than
most of us have been fishing. It can be used a bunch of different
ways. However it's most effective just the way your brother
demonstrated in the real thick stuff. Sounds like your brother is a
pretty smart fisherman. It also works well with pork traliers.
Somewhere in here is a Note on favorite Lures. If I recall the Silver
Spoon is mentioned quite a bit.

I tried two more techniques that worked this weekend. I immediatly
started reeling the moment the spoon hit the water. I think the
sinking part tends to load up weeds. The other thing was when I was
really in the heavy heavy crap I added a couple of squirts of bass
scent. This helped lubricate the lure and seemed to help move it
    through without catching.
