1402.0. "Winni Derby" by SALEM::JUNG () Tue May 08 1990 15:51

I think it's about time we heard some RECENT news about
how the fishing is at Winni P. Ice has been out for sometime
now and so far not too many stories...er facts. The tourney is
just around the corner ya know! I will be going up a week early
to hopefully get in some good Salmoning before the crowds ar-
rive. Who from DEC is going...anybody? Is Governor's Island
still hot? How about Rattlesnake. I'll be staying near Wiers
beach through the tournament. Jealous? So hey, I like feedback.

    Jeff,
I'll be heading up a week from Friday for the derby.
We're staying at a place called Sandy point beach
hotel. It's in Alton bay. I haven't heard any of the
reports on this springs season other then in general
the salmon fishing has gone to hell because the lake
was overstocked in the past and the smelt population
couldn't keep up. This year the state is launching a
pilot program to stock rainbows and browns that they
think won't compete with the smelt forage. I'm not so sure
about there strategy, as anyone who fishes the big lakes
knows that the trout will eat any smelt available, only
rarely do they change over to feeding on insects. On the
other hand I've caught salmon before full of small insects,
but anyways it will be fun to have the chance to catch
a nice brown or rainbow on Winni or Sunapee....

1402.2how big can a salmon get on bugsMTADMS::GEIBELNOTHIN LIKE FISH ON !Wed May 09 1990 10:1426
Well to start off by saying that the fishing has picked up alittle
since the first week of the season but it is by far very poor quality
    and quanity of fish caught.
Yeah there are some decent sized fish caught but I dont concider
a 16" 1lb salmon very nice, to find out why they are so small just
open the stomachs of the legal ones and see how many smelt you can
find, there is a severe problem with the smelt in winni, they are
dying for some apparent reason. now I am not a fish biologist but
there has got to be a reason why in the last 4-5 years the smelt
have been in serious trouble. the problem has gone so far now that
the only way to reastablish a forage is to do a transplant.
I did a smelt study on newfound lake this spring and its not
much better there, in one & half months only counted 40-50 smelt
eggs that is pretty poor concidering a female releases over 3,000.

                                        well good luck anyhow
I will be fishing the derby what the heck I get a day off!

1402.3The Winni DerbyJUPITR::SALVIFWed May 09 1990 10:3014

I've been to Winni two times this year and both times have caught
10 and 11 salmon each time, they were all keepers (if you consider
keeping 16-18" salmon). I agree that there is a real concern about the
smelt population. Has anyone noticed that some of salmon are missing
a bottom fin? I was told that the salmon that are missing the bottom
left fin are from Moosehead Lake, but can't remember where the others
(missing the right fin) are from. Has anyone else heard??
I leave for the Derby on the 16th, sure hope we can find some
    that are at least 20".

          Good luck to all,

In Lake Ontario, a bottom fin is clipped if the fish is a stocked
fish. I am not sure if this would apply in the US fishing areas.

1402.5???????????????????????SALEM::JUNGWed May 09 1990 13:1411
The newspaper (flyer) that came out about a month ago said
that there were 848 Salmon in the 4-8 lb range released threw
a hole in the ice...er through a hole in the ice. It seems to me
these fish would be a bit longer than 16-18 inches. The question
is is where are they? Could they still be a little deeper...or
maybe a little smarter? Any ideas?

1402.6Smarter or Deeper??JUPITR::SALVIFWed May 09 1990 14:2112

I think it's a little of both, they may be smarter but they HAVE
to be deeper, we caught them all on top, I'd like to tell you where
    but, well, well you understand!!
A friend of mine lives on the lake and he has seen some large
Salmon, but not too many, and the majority of them are being caught
    by people on the shore!!!

          still searching,

Rumor has it that these salmon have made their way down river onto
Lake Winnisquam. They have been seen congregating under the private docks of
South Bay Resort. Fishing is much better on this lake anyway. For more
    information and reservations call 603-528-2449.

Well, I don't know about the salmon but the smallmouth
are starting to turn on! My wife and I spent Saturday morning
fishing with John Easter and between us we caught about a dozen.
My wife caught the biggest which weighed 4 lbs.! The water temp
fluctuated between 51 to the warmest of 55 degrees. It seemed as
soon as we came into the warmer water the fish just turned on.
I should say that John hooked me on his ever famous Bomber.
I'm gonna get me some of those!
Oh yeah, we did have a salmon follow one of our lures right
up to the boat and according to my wife and John, it was huge.

P.S. Hey John, thanks again. Michelle and I really enjoyed ourselves!

    Bob,

I have a couple of those famous lures, courtesy of John's generous
nature, and they do work! One of them is more beat up than any six
other lures I own - proof positive! John mentioned that they are hard
to find in the magic color, and he's right. Neither Cabela's nor Bass
Pro carries them, and until this year I never saw one in a store. Now
you can get them at Paugus Bay Sporting Goods on Weirs Blvd in Laconia,
and Northern Bass Supply has them in their catalog (and presumably their
store). I think John goes through them by the case!

A couple of weekends ago I got my straight-backed bomber caught in a
tree when I stopped at a pond for a few casts on the way home from
work. Needless to say I was upset! I tried to knock it out of the tree
with sticks, but to no avail. I actually went back the next morning
with a forty foot rope and a stick, and after about forty minutes of
work I got it back. My biggest mistake, however, was how it got tangled
in the tree in the first place. Ok, so I made a BAD cast that lobbed
over some high branches, but I stupidly tried to tug it back through
the branches instead of letting it drop down to the water, retrieving
it, and cutting the line. It would have been MUCH easier...

Anyhow, last year I missed the pre-spawn action at Winni, but don't
    plan to this year!

I didn't make it up to Winnie myself, but I read in the paper yesterday
that exactly one (that's right: 1) fish was caught in the tourney.
"A rather small salmon", at that. The cool, overcast conditions were
   blamed.

1402.12lot's of fish...but all smallCSMET2::WOODMon May 21 1990 11:5122
I went up Friday night. My SO and I caught 8 salmon on Saturday
and 5 Sunday. I was impressed with the action, but the salmon
were all on the small side. The largest one we boated was 19.5 inches.
This was just short of the 20 inch minimum to enter a fish. I
didn't feel to bad until the end when we found out that only
8 salmon were registered throughout the tourney. I think if I had
of spent some time laying him out it might of made the 20 inches,
but at the time I figured it wouldn't be close to winning anything.
Last night at the awards ceremony they had dozens and dozens of
great prizes that they ended up raffeling off because there were
no people to award them to. The winning salmon was 5.25 pounds.
This guy walked away with a boat. People with relatively small fish
(2-3lbs) won things like Impulse combination fish finder/loran c
units. I was green with envy....Next year they'll have to look
at changing the rules to allow smaller fish. From other people
we talked with the fishing was ok, just all small sized. For
what it's worth I didn't mark one school of baitfish on the fish
finder the two days we were there. The smelt population is
    definitley in trouble....

       Marty,

Well I dont know how long you fished each day but we spent 28 hrs
of actual trolling. we hooked up with 12 salmon and boated 11 the
bigest was 19.5". we also never saw a baitfish school on the finder
and we were everywhere from 10-160 foot of water.
I will be taking a stomach from one of the salmon to the fish
biologist tonight to have something checked out. not one of the 6
fish we kept this weekend had smelt in them, only bugs and pebbles.

Well till this weekend they are safe.

I didn't notice any smelt in the fish either. I did notice what
looked like corn inside one fish.

We spent 10 hours on Saturday trolling and 5 on Sunday. The fish
were in the top 12 ft of water. We had good luck with a fly trolled
on top. We also took a few fish on a sutton spoon set on the downrigger
at 11 feet. Another couple came in on a sewed on shiner that we
trolled with one color of leadcore line out. I couldn't catch a
lake trout to save my life. I marked a few fish in the 60 to 80
ft range. I tried bouncing bottom with the riggers, all different
lures, different leader lengths etc...no luck...The salmon will
feed on insects if forced to, but I'm not sure the lakers can
    survive without smelt.

I'm glad to see that some of you guys hooked into fish. We spent about
4 hours friday morning around Gov. Island (with about 50 other boats)
and didnt see anything caught at all. Tried Paugus bay with no
results. Checked in about 2pm at Wiers Beach and there was nothing on
the leader board! Quit and went bassin around the Islands and did
    pretty well between rainshowers.

Saturday trolled from Guilford to Rattlesnake and caught one keeper
size Salmon (but tournament short) on a wobbler just below the surface.
Continued down Alton Bay with no results. Gave it up and went bassin
    again.

The good thing that came out of it was that my partner, whos from
Alabama, caught his first Salmon. His reaction? "I'll stick to bass".
He was one cold, miserable son after 2 days of New England "springtime".

Does anyone up around Winni know of motel that will rent out
a room for the Sat. night of the derby (Feb. 2nd) for one night?
I checked around and everyone I talked to has a two night minumum
that weekend. Maybe someone would be willing to put up 2 or 3 guys
for the night in their spare bedroom/cellar/attic/whatever, as long
as it's partially heated :*) We'd even be willing to pay the going
rate. If you'd like to talk, how about sending me mail off line.
