| Jeff,
I'm not sure where your fishing, but if it's for salmon and lake trout
in cold water my guess is that what your seeing on the bottom is
baitfish or pearch. Salmon and trout are on top now. On the real
hot days this time of year they may dip down to 25ft or so, but
not usually this early. Later in the summer they'll be on the
bottom if they are lakers, and between maybe 60 and 40 for landlocked
salmon. One other hint is to try and shorten up the distance between
the ball and lure. Also, trolling speed is key. Try verying it,
but 2.7mph for salmon and 2.1 for lakers is a good place to start.
This time of year i'd go slower before faster, but you never know...
Also try lower pound test line if you haven't already. Clear lakes
might mean you have to drop down to 6 or sometimes even four for
landlocks....
Good luck,
Marty

| Thanks for the reply. I do realize the fish are SUPPOSED to be on
or near the top. I am 99% certain that this so. N.H. pond has been
stocked. Nobody is catching any trout, at all! I have talked to
many people and the story is the same. The trout'in is usually real
good but not so far this year. I have ordered the speed sensor from
BPS but it has not arrived yet. You are probably right about these
being baitfish but they eat too, don't they?

| hmmmmm, what kind of trout are we talking about here ? This
wouldn't be long pond ? If so I think it holds the state
record for browns, or did at one time. I've fished it before
without success, but didn't have a fish finder at the time so
can't compare notes on that.

| Jeff is it possible that you are seeing your down-rigging ball ? Even
though they are attached they will somtimes look like fish (red), if
they are showing up about the depth you think you have your down-rigger
set that could be your fish ! Just an Idea, it happened to me before
then I realized everytime I moved by down-riggers the fish followed.
