"hillbilly TV", which works fine!

1395.5 | They do work...BUT... | ASHBY::CORLISS | | Fri Apr 27 1990 09:26 | 14 |
| Being a fisherman who likes to fish in Maine during peak black fly
season, I have tried just about everything to keep the bugs from
biting, including the battery operated ultrasonic repellents. I have
found that these ultrasonic repellents do stop the pests from biting,
BUT they also attract them....so if you can stand an increased
population of insects around you that tend not to bite, go for it.
I for one, decided I would rather remain sane, so I traded in the
ultrasonic repellent for some good old "Cutter" lotion and a bottle
of Avon "Skin So Soft". The Cutter works great for black flies and
the SSS works well for mosquitoes.
Here's to hopin' the fish are bitin' a lot more than the bugs are......

| I picked on up from my father, guarenteed to keep elephants
away from my kids when there playing in the yard, it must
work good, because i havent seen an elephant in the whole town.
Coonass, i think your referring to a flourecent bug light.
but i have to admit, i've never seen a bat run into
one yet. but they're always no stop around here, one
thing, i dont own one. the way i see it poeple leaving
them on all night, with the price of elec. around here.
I'll SLAP'EM. and stick to the bug dope.

| Did anyone catch the story on the news last night about a number of the
insect repelents (including Off) being pulled off the shelf because they
cause cancer in rats? My wife told me of this...maybe she is just trying to
get me to stay at home more often!! 8^)

Yes I saw but only briefly, from what I really got out of it was
that there is an ingredient (1 chemical) that is causing the problems.
I didn't catch which one but they did say it was on the label in
the listings of ingredients.

The specific chemical name is the second ingredient on the can label,
The abreviation for it is DNT. Its one of those Diethel-nitro-tri-
ethelene compounds....
I returned my two (unused) cans of Deep Woods Off this weekend...no ?

| When all sounds don't do it, and you're concerned about the
carcinogens, try an old pollak method; VICKS VAPORUB!!
Don't put it where the fumes rise to the eyes tho.

1395.12 | BUG BAFFLER | DNEAST::STEVENS_JIM | | Thu May 10 1990 13:06 | 30 |
| Although not highly electronic, I picked up an add at the
Maine Sportsman Show for the "BUG BAFFLER".
From the add:
BUG BAFFLER is a one-piece headnet shirt made entirely of screening
material. It is comfortable and lightweight, yet sturdy and effective.
The material itself has a semi rigid quality which allows it to stand
away from the face and body, affording the wearer excellent protection
without layers of heavy clothing, the use of harsh chemicals, or even
the necessity of wearing a hat, although there is ample room for one.
BUG BAFFLER gives you freedom to get out of the house and into
activities you want to do. It's great for gardners, FISHERMEN, campers,
porch sitters - anyone who wants to be outdoors.
The price is $25, including S&H.
Send to BUG BAFFLER
P.O. BOX 444
Goffstown, NH 03045
It comes in Adult, small-xlarge, and child, small-large...
There is no phone number....
I was going to buy one but did not. After Tuesday evening, I sent in
my check..
