1389.0. "Lucky Bassin???" by SAHQ::QUALE (DOLPHINS::QUALE) Fri Apr 20 1990 11:54

    I'm hooked!!! I went out fishing about 2 weeks ago for
    Bass for the first time. Well I tried 2 spots with no luck
    then the third spot,a submerged island off of a point was
    the place. In about 1 1/2 hours I caught 9 ranging from
    2 - 4 pounds and missed about the same number. It was great!!
    I have gone back to the same spot 3 times since and have caught
    less fish. The first time I got 4 but missed about 15 hits and the
    the following times got 3 and missed 5 or 6. Am I doing anything
    wrong or are the fish just moving on me? The point drops to about
    15 ft. then rises to 7 ft on the submerged island and drops to 35
    feet from the island. This must be a great place to fish being
    that I get hits every time. I just wonder if I was real lucky the
    first time. I do not have a trolling motor and just anchor off the
    point and cast all around me. When I get the hits I count to about 5
    and reel in the slack before I it set the hook. I've also tried setting
    the hook immediately but this seems to always fail. I've heard at
    times that you must move around to find bass but I wonder if my
    submerged island is a natural attractor and I'll always find something
    there. There is a fair amount of structure here also.

1389.1Temp is a big factorDELNI::OTAFri Apr 20 1990 12:0716
    I would say the only thing thats happening here is the weather. I'll
    bank each time you've gone the tempature has shifted up or down, and
    odds are down.

    This is early for bass the water temp is below 50 and bass are warmer
    water critters. You'll find that as the temp stabilizes your hot spot
    will return and get consistent again too. As temp drops the bass go
    deep. during the day if it warms up considerably they sometimes move
    the shallows becasue they tend to heat quicker. But if the temp rocks
    up and down I think they stay deep.

    Also if you hit as many as your saying, they could be getting used to
    your lures, try some different lures and see, but I will bank money
    this is temp driven.

1389.3Feel The Hit = SET THE HOOKPACKER::BACZKOIt's Spring!!!! Lets go fishin'Fri Apr 20 1990 13:4713
    Nice Going!!!!

        Sounds like your not doing to much wrong if your catching that many
    fish. The only advice I'd give is this. Keep the slack out of the
    line so you dont have to reel it in. Also DONT count to 5 (if you are
    using lures, live bait I think it make sense to wait longer) with lures
    though, set the hook when you feel the hit, dont give the fish a chance
    to spit the hook.

    Good Luck!!!

1389.4Summer's comin'DONVAN::T_THEOIt's OK, I'm with the band.Fri Apr 20 1990 14:5911

    Beginers luck I'd say...although I never had it. Defintely strike back
    quick if your using lures and always put'em back...unless you want a
    trophy or a meal. A trophy fish in NH (Large mouth anyway) is 7lbs...

    I wonder what a 7 pounder looks like?

    You really oughta tell us where this place is, so that we can give you
    more help ;-)

    One thing you might try - and this is assuming that you are intending-
    but-have-not-gotten-around-to mentioning where your pond is located -
    is to try plastic grubs on lead head jigs. Sharpen the hooks real well,
    and I doubt you'll have much trouble setting the hook - the fish will
    pretty much do it for you...

1389.7Here fishy-fishySAHQ::QUALEDOLPHINS::QUALEMon Apr 23 1990 10:3925
    Well I went to my hotspot once again this weekend. Oh by the way y'all
    are welcome to try your luck at my little spot. I don't mind telling
    you it's lake lanier in Georgia. I was only able to land 1 on
    Saturday but did get a number of hits but just couldn't set the hook.
    I'm assuming that this might have been because these were smaller fish.
    I think .1 could be right in that the weather has played a factor, each
    weekend has had some changing weather on both sides but mostly on the
    cold side. Water temperature on saturday was 61 - 62. My lucky first
    time out it was 58 and had dropped back to 56 in between. I've been
    using different baits but mainly have been using lizards which they
    seem to nail the heck out of. I've also caught some of these fish
    using a gold rattle trap. They don't seem to like any of the other
    artificials i've thrown. Next weekend I'm taking my 8 year old and
    would really like to hook into some. Do I stay put with my prior
    hotspot or do I need to go to the back of coves (10-15 feet)looking
    for these fish to be in a spawning mode (coves have 30-40 foot channels)
    The back of the creek is 5 feet with a drop to a 10 foot channel. Should
    I concentrate on the coves or the back of the creek??????? I've also
    seen spots where there are large schools of shad. I have tried with no
    luck in these areas thinking where there are bait fish there will be
    predators. Is this a wrong tactic??? Are submerged islands good spots
    for spring fishing???

    Lizards? Live or plastic? If they're plastic maybe the hits you're
    getting are short strikes - nipping at the tail and missing the hooks
    altogether. Or maybe it's small fish not big enough to get the bait in
    their mouth.

    I still say get a few Mr Twister plastic grubs and lead head jigs
    (1/16 to 1/8 oz) - preferably smoke or maybe chartruese. If you get a
    hit from anything big enough to get it into its mouth, it will set the
    hook by itself - guaranteed. My wife - bless her little beginner's
    heart - never missed a fish when using that rig.

    Lake Lanier, huh? ...not exactly local ...oh well!

    Lake Lanier, huh. I wasnt sure -- were you complaining about the water
    temp being 58?

    The Bandit and I fished a little pond last thursday here in NH. After
    launching the boat. We parked the truck/trailer on the last of the SNOW
    on the ramp. Should have taken a picture. My temp gauge said 39
    degrees. Needless to say the fishing was slow. Only one in the boat.

    One other thing. The ice was officially out of Winni last weekend. Half
    the fishermen in this building went up.
1389.10Sunken Islands you betDELNI::OTATue Apr 24 1990 12:135
    Fishing sunken islands is always a good bet.
    They give bass a place to hang around and quick access to deep water.
