1375.0. "Looking for advice on mounting gas trolling motor" by HYEND::POPIENIUCK () Tue Apr 03 1990 16:35

I recently acquired a small outboard (through this file) to use mainly
as a trolling motor. I'm looking for some advice, based on experience,
on the best way to provide a mount for it.

My boat is a 16' deep V hull Sea Nymph with a 45 HP Merc. I'm aware of
about four different ways I might mount the new gas trolling motor on
the transom. One is to hang it right on the transom itself along side
the bigger Merc, but that would likely have the shaft of the kicker in
the way of the Merc or else have it set so low that the shaft would
mostly drag in the water when not in use and I don't fancy taking the
motor on and off once out on the drink. The second way is with a rigid
mount that extends off the rear of the transom, just sort of puts it
about a foot back from where it would be if on the transom itself with
    about the same disadvantages.

The I've seen two other mounts. One bolts on the transom and can be
lifted up when the kicker isn't in use. Result is that the motor is
always there ready to use, but up and out of the way when not in use.
Cost of this type of mount appears to be $100 - $125. The there's
another variation of this that adds the ability to mount a bracket that
allows the whole trolling mount to be removed when not in use and keep
a clean transom (just the mounting plate) when the small motor isn't
    needed.

Anyone got any experience or advice on any of these setups? Also I
intend to see if I can avoid any sort of tandem steering set up. I'd
like to just be able to use the bigger Merc to steer by. Anyone
foresee any problems with this? Thanks in advance. Pete

1375.1I like the tilt up type + steering armDNEAST::OKERHOLM_PAUWed Apr 04 1990 13:088
I've had good luck with the tilt up type. I used it on my 8 hp
auxilliary until it was stolen. When I replaced it with a 25 hp I had on
another boat I went to a heavy duty version which also works well.
I use a steering arm which connects the two motors together for
steering purposes. You didn't mention what kind of steering you have
but unless it is straight tiller steering I'd recomment the arm.
