1349.1 | Go get yourself some CHEAP SUNGLASSES | PACKER::BACZKO | It's Spring!!!! Lets go fishin' | Thu Mar 15 1990 12:45 | 12 |
| Fishing without polorized sun glasses??
Might as well not put a hook on the line!!! 8>) 8>)
Seriously now.
In the spring it is the best advantage you have for bassin'. The
fish tend to go into shallow water for spawn and a little sunning and
you can spot them a whole lot easier. At last years DEC Classic I'd
say we saw 90% of the fish we caught due to them. The ones I got havve
the side shields on them. they are real dark looking but are not to bad
even on cloudy days. Got them at the ANNEX for 10 bucks

What would a pair of polarized-prescription glasses run?

1349.3 | Great subject -- Prescription cost? | CGVAX2::HAGERTY | Jack Hagerty KI1X | Thu Mar 15 1990 12:53 | 8 |
| I do. I wear bi-focals. Hate clip ons. I have 'glass' polorized ones
with a clear close-up maginication for tying. They look a little silly
with the dark top/clear peek hole on the bottom. I can get away with not
having prescription ones because my vision for seeing at distance is
not that bad. But I sure need for trying to see what my fingers are
feeling. I wish I could get some prescripton ones. I also have another
pair I bought from BP that have the magnification hidden with the
lense. But these are plastic. Scratch easy.

1349.5 | LOOK FARTHER!!!! | GENRAL::HUNTER | from SUNNY Colorado, Wayne | Thu Mar 15 1990 13:39 | 17 |
| If the DARK lenses are too dark for you, LOOK AROUND!!!!! There is
just about EVERY color, tint, darkness level available out there
SOMEWHERE. I have photo-gray lenses on my prescription glasses.
Because of this, I want the glasses to tell me how dark things need to
be. I got a pair of clip-ons that are BARELY TINTED GRAY. I also got
a pair that are a bronze color for overcast days to heighten contrast.
Fish without POLARIZED LENSES?????? THROW ROCKS INSTEAD!!!!!! On
weedy lakes, they are a MUST. On bright days, the reflecting glare off
rippled water will give me a DOOZY of a headache.
How much are the clip-ons? About $4.00-$6.00 a pair if you can
find a discount place (I find that Long's Drugs here in CXO has the
best selection in town) that has a good selection. They even have
yellow shooting glasses for you hunters out there. As for side glare,
buy a pair of side shields for ski glasses from a ski house. They
should be CHEAP this time of year. They just slide over the temples of
your glasses. You can get leather which totally blocks side light or
various tints. So, just do a little more looking.

1349.6 | Not cheap! | TOMCAT::PRESTON | Know-whut-I-mean Vern? | Thu Mar 15 1990 13:56 | 16 |
| Well, I've noticed that Cabela's is offering Ray Ban/Bausche and Lomb
prescription polarized sunglasses in various tints in their catalogue
this spring. The prices range from $110 to $190. I've also called a few
optical companies and the lowest price I've had quoted to me was
around $100, with only one grade of green tint available. Lighter
grades of gray are available from another source via special order, but
those begin at $129, exclusive of frames. Beginning to sound expensive..!
The alternative (for me) is get contact lenses and a plain 'ol pair of
polarized - like the ones in the catalogues.
Wayne - thanks for the suggestion of the side shields. I didn't know
that they sold them seprately. I'll definintely look for them - that
would go a long way to solving the side glare problem..

1349.7 | get anti-glare coating | DECSIM::DEMBA | | Thu Mar 15 1990 14:03 | 11 |
| I picked up some polarized sun glasses (prescription) last summer.
The glare made them difficult to use in some situations. I took
them back to Cambridge Eye (on Rt. 20 Marlboro) and had them put
an anti-glare coat on them. They work great now.
That coating cost $28 (with the Tufts medical ins. discount -20%)
By the way Cambridge Eye gives a 20% discount to all Tufts insured
people.

1349.9 | Polarized glasses Northern Bass $10 cheap! | CPDW::OTA | | Fri Mar 16 1990 13:24 | 8 |
| Heck save yourself some cash get the glass polarized lense from
Northern Bass for $10. I bought them and for the buck they do just
fine. These are glass and have the full side sheilds. Last year I had
the Basch and Lomb UV at $100 and my eyes got cooked from the side
glare. These $10 glasses work the same and are comfortable and boy
they do cut the glare down.

1349.10 | you forgot... | TOMCAT::PRESTON | Know-whut-I-mean Vern? | Fri Mar 16 1990 15:42 | 7 |
| Yeah, but a lot of us *need* prescription lenses. Those glasses
won't do much for you if everything is a blur!
But if I get contacts, I'll buy 'em!

1349.11 | DOn't buy the ones that are not UV protected. | MRBASS::BPUISHYS | Bob Puishys | Mon Mar 19 1990 11:02 | 10 |
| I have a pair that got at spags and I think they are designed to be
worn over normal pair of lenses.
As for the real dark ones, look around I have a light gray/blue. When
they are on every thing is bright. They are also UV protected. That
is just as important. The polorized helps the fishing but the UV
protects your eyes.

1349.13 | You do need good eyes for sunglasses | CPDW::OTA | | Mon Mar 19 1990 14:56 | 11 |
| Ed
I forgot to tell you, you buy contacts like me and then you never need
worry about the blur. In fact for fishing I swear by them, they never
mist up in early morning fog and no spray from the bow can screw them
up or rain either.
With contacts you need good sunglasses and again the $10 pair from
Northern Bass fits that bill.

This may sound dumb, but how much do contacts cost these days?
Including the initial exam and all... And don't they take some
getting used to?
Thanks,

I think the whole shabang will run you about 80-100 today depending on
where you go. Cambridge optical or lens crafters has deals where you
get your eyes checked contacts fitted and then follow up checkups for
that price. The maintenance costs; solutions etc run about 50 a year
depending on what you want to do ie boiling them or chemical cleans.
As far as comfort I could not wear hard contacts. I spent 300 for them
and ended up throwing them away. Years later at the insistence of my
wife I went for the soft ones. It took 15 minutes to get used to them.
They have so many types now, extended wear, daily wear and throw aways
you should be able to find ones that fit comfortably.
Like I said getting out of a shower and still seeing clearly is a
revelation.

1349.16 | yeap, a problem for us blind folks | RANGER::MACINTYRE | Terminal Angler | Mon Mar 26 1990 13:30 | 12 |
| I agree that polaroids are a necessity while fishing. I too wear
glasses and use the awkward looking clip-ons. The clip-ons are a real
pain though. They scratch easily and have to be replaced often. Most
styles can scratch the lenses of your glasses. Most styles do not
offer side coverage. And some come off easily at high speeds. I
looked into getting polarized presciptions, but could not justify the
cost, especially sice my eyes have been changing yearly. I've also toyed
with the idea of going back to contacts, becuase of the reasons mentioned
earlier (cheaper sunglasses, don't mist or get wet, etc). But I require
daily wear contacts and I can't decide if they're worth the trouble.

1349.17 | $250 at the local guy! | CGVAX2::HAGERTY | Jack Hagerty KI1X | Mon Mar 26 1990 16:00 | 10 |
| I dropped my glasses and popped the lense, and took them over the my eye
Dr. after lunch for him to re-insert, whatever. I asked him $$ for
bifocal, polorized, prescriptions. For the frames we would want. IE
large, etc. $250.. He said 'lenscrafters' would be MORE $$ for that
kind of thing. Dont know if thats true. The question is whether its
cost justified, like Donmac says. If I had $$ to burn.......
I hate clip ons. I can wear the ones that have a magnified bifocal.
But my eyes get tired by days end. OH - I dont need glasses to drive a
car by their offical testing. So that says they are not Too bad. If
they were, I dont know what my choice then would be.

1349.19 | seeing the fish finder | PENUTS::GORDON | | Thu Mar 29 1990 12:29 | 12 |
| I have a problem with sunglasses and seeing my fish finder. It is a
Ray Jefferson color unit and sunglasses make the bottom/fish difficult
to see. On a bright day I have to flip up the glasses to see the
screen clearly.
Has anyone else had this problem and if so what's the solution.
I do all my fishing in salt water both in and off shore out of the
merrimack river.

1349.20 | COMMON PROBLEM | GENRAL::HUNTER | from SUNNY Colorado, Wayne | Thu Mar 29 1990 18:01 | 14 |
| re. -.1
Problem is WELL known and DOCUMENTED. In fact, if you look in just
about ANY user manual for an LCG you will read, "Polarized sunglasses
can cause problems when trying to read the unit. This can occur as a
rainbow effect or blanking of the screen. To correct the problem, turn
the read-out or change the angle of the display. (If you want, send me
MAIL and I can describe what is happening to cause the problem.)
How do I know that????? JUST READ IT LAST NIGHT in the manual for
my new HumminBird 3004. Seems that BEST had the 3004 on sale for
$129.99 and the 4000 for $139.99. Couldn't see the $10.00 for screen
recall, myself. NOW, to get the deep cycle battery, transducer, and
LCG out to the Hot Tub tonight to test it!!!!! (Wonder what kind of
fish I'll see in there????) :-)
