| Here's a few to get this started:
buzzbait - A type of spinnerbait with a propeller blade which, when retrieved
across the surface, goes "buzz". (Actually it's more like a very
fast gurgle.) Buzzbaits may either be wire "V" shaped or in-line.
crankbait - A plastic or balsa bodied lure, usually squat, which resembles a
shad or other small forage fish. Crankbaits have "lips" on them
which make them dive and swim erratically with a side-to-side or
wiggle action.
flipping - An underhand presentation for soft delivery of a bait into a tight
(flippin') pocket in the cover. Casting is not usually involved but rather
the bait is swung underhand to its target.
(see flipping stick, pitching)
flipping stick - A long (usually 7' or 7'6"), heavy action rod which is used to
(flippin') reach deep into pockets in the cover. (see flipping)
grub - Small plastic-bodied lure, usually with a curled tail which ripples on
retrieve. Generally fished on the back of a jig
jig - Any lead-bodied lure with rear protruding hook. Generally, there is
some type of softer body on the back, such as a skirt or a grub, etc.
jig-n-pig - A jig with a rubber skirt and bristles (to make it weedless) with
a pork trailer (pig) attached. Popular opinion seems to indicate
that a bass views this lure as a crayfish.
pig - A pork trailer. Comes in many sizes, shapes and colors.
pitching - Similar to flipping, pitching is basically an underhand cast. Used
in situations where it is not possible to get too close to a target
and where an overhead cast is not appropriate (under trees, etc.)
poppers - Any type of lure which goes "pop". Generally, these are surface
plugs with cupped faces (like a dish or bowl)
spinnerbait - A wire "V" with a weighted head, hook and trailer (usually a
rubber skirt) below and one or more blades above. Multi-bladed
spinnerbaits are called tandems (unless there are three wires).
texas rigged - A method of fishing worms/other plastic baits where the hook is
inserted into the top of the bait, pushed out, turned and re-
inserted, thus keeping the bait straight and weedless. A
worm (special slip style) weight is then put on the line and
allowed to slide down to the hook/bait.
worm (plastic worm) - A longer, straighter-bodied bait than a grub. Generally
fished texas-rigged.

| Reel definitions:
Spincast: One of those reels with the tiny hole in the front where the
line comes out. Most often seen on the Zebco rod/reel combos for kids.
The easiest reel to master, casts pretty well, not quite as durable as
the other kinds ("Rhino tough" Zebco 33 not withstanding). Also known
as "closed face" reel.
Spinning: Open faced reel with a fixed spool. The line peels off the
end of the spool and is controlled by a rotating bail. The most
commonly used type of reel (by fresh water fishermen anyway)
Baitcaster: Type of reel where the spool is mounted at a right angle to
the rod and the spool must rotate to release or retrieve the line.
Probably the most durable - and difficult to master.
(gee - this isn't as easy as it looks!)
Hey Jerry, I was right where you are just a couple of summers ago.
Don't worry, just browse the fishing aisle at K Mart for a start, then
thumb through a fishing magazine of two. You'll pick it up reel fast.
(Reel fast... get it?? ha ha!)
