1337.0. "Fishing w/ Nintendo" by WJOUSM::MAZEROLLE () Tue Feb 27 1990 11:02

    Nintendo has developed a game to help us through the winter famine,
    it's called "black bass". I here you can choose your lure type, line
    strength, etc. You can catch bass, trout, etc. Sounds like fun to me, I
    know I'm getting one ASAP. It even has a tournament function so that
    you can fish against someone.

    That nintendo game "black bass" is it available in the stores now,
    and what is the price of this cassette? Sounds like it will defenetly
    get me thru this winter famine.

1337.2Nintendo notes file #WJOUSM::MAZEROLLETue Feb 27 1990 11:315
    I just found 'black bass' in the Nintendo notes file, it's note number 343.
    Sounds like fun and has more features than I was originally lead to
    believe. This could be better than buying new lures ! If you don't
    release non-bass, you don't get tourney points and can't make it to the
    next level (bigger fish).
1337.3it's no super mario brothersDONMAC::MACINTYRETerminal AnglerTue Feb 27 1990 11:5218
    That game is discussed in one of the other topics in here also.

    I too had to run right out and buy one. It's good for a few laughs but
    the novelty wore off quick for me because I felt they could have done
    a much better job implementing some of the features.

    My biggest peave is the huge checksum that is generated when you finish
    a tournament or when you decide to stop fishing. If you wish to
    continue as the same fisherman and go on to other lakes you have to
    manually write down this huge (25 chars maybe?) alphanumeric number
    checksum that you'll have to re-enter the next time you restart. And
    it's a different number each time you restart. I think an optional
    short password of your own choice would have been *more* than adequate
    "security precautions"...

    It's somewhat entertaining though, beats shoveling snow.

    I took a look at the Nintendo note 343 and it appears that alot of
    folks are enjoying the game. Maybe I'll give it another chance 8^).

    Hit SELECT to add the Nintendo conference to your notebook and check out
    note 343 as noted in a previous reply.

1337.5 passwording ? ?WJOUSM::MAZEROLLETue Feb 27 1990 12:585
    How do you input the checksum number. I had rented another game and it
    also had a password feature. I only have a basic nintendo unit and
    couldn't imagine what they meant.

    Don,

          I guess there is hope that we will show young Greg how to catch
    a fish! I was hoping it would be in your boat on the Conneticut River.

    Oh well- a computer image fish is better than none at all!

    Lets do some real fishing!!!

1337.8A few hints, FUN GAMEGENRAL::HUNTERfrom SUNNY Colorado, WayneTue Feb 27 1990 17:0512
    	A few interesting things that I have found about the game:

    1) To move from Lake C to Lake B you need to catch at least 24 pounds
    of fish in one day.

    2) To move from Lake B to Lake A, you need to catch 28 pounds.

    3) Unsure of weight to move from one level A lake to the other. I had
    64 pounds of bass in one day and went from 47th to 18th in one day.

    NOW, all I have to do is figure out WHAT they want to eat on HEAVY RAIN
    on San Lake. (Current standing 15th place. Largest Bass 18#.)
1337.9Keeping it Alive ?WJOUSM::MAZEROLLEWed Feb 28 1990 08:055
    Hi Wayne how long have you been playing, sounds like it keeps your
    interests up (at least during the winter drought !). I plan to find a
    copy this weekend and be out bass fishing by Sunday morning.

1337.10Where to buyHYEND::WOODWed Feb 28 1990 14:254
    If you were new to the area, lived in princeton Ma (out rt 2) and
    worked in Acton where would you go to try and pick this game up ?

1337.11Possibilities ?WJOUSM::MAZEROLLEThu Mar 01 1990 08:128
    I think Toys R US sells Nintendo games, I know there is one in
    Fitchburg on John Fitch Highway. Nintendo is pretty popular so I'd
    guess a lot of places sell it. You might even want to try the K-Mart in
    Acton at the intersection of Route 27 and 101, though I don't know if
    they "do" Nintendo. Kaybee toys also sells N if you have one near you.
    I'll bet the FAIR on route 12 in S. Boylston sells N also.

    Good luck, Don
1337.12Nintendo run...HYEND::WOODThu Mar 01 1990 12:307
    Well,
    Last night I tried KMART in fitchburg, but they were all
    out although they do carry them, then I tried a place called
    Prime Value mart. They carry them too, but were all out.
    In fact both places were out of the game units themselves.
    What is this, a run on Nintendo all over again ??? :-)

1337.13I found it - sort of !WJOUSM::MAZEROLLEMon Mar 05 1990 11:4412
    Well, I looked through most of Nashua and Chelmsford and couldn't find
    a copy either but I did rent it this weekend. I found the game to be
    boring and frustrating - JUST LIKE REAL FISHING !!, I loved it. I
    actually found it more difficult than some other N games. It was pretty
    realistic, if you didn't keep fishing and pay attention to the details
    you fell behind in your standings, I never made it to the 2cd level and
    kept the cartridge for an extra day. You choose you lure type
    (according to the weather) and then your location, you must keep other
    fish off the line or waste time fighting it. YOu must also work your
    lure correctly of fish will leave it behind. It was fun, graphics could
    be better and the paddle could use some sort of engineering but the
    basic game is pretty good.
1337.14REAL FISHING PREVAILSGENRAL::HUNTERfrom SUNNY Colorado, WayneMon Mar 05 1990 11:569
    	Been too busy with REAL fishing here for the last couple of weeks
    to fish on the Nintendo. However, after learning a few tricks on the
    lower lakes, I can get the kids through a level in one evening. I will
    probably just go back to the other "A" lake and refish it to get some
    more experience there to use in the top lake. Perhaps I can get
    something other than RAIN to fish, too. (Fishing in a rain storm in
    Colorado with a Graphite rod IS ASKING FOR TROUBLE!!!! So, I have
    little rain fishing experience.) I don't like tooling around on a lake
    in a thunderstorm with a lightning rod in my hands. :-(
1337.15No 'Toys R us' in FitchburgMILKWY::MLOEWELow in sugar; Low in salt; LowenbrauMon Mar 05 1990 14:1811

That's Child World on John Fitch in Fitchburg.

I played the game also (rented it) and it's great. BTW has anyone figured
how you're supposed to put in the code "mirun" to help you move the lure at a
presentable speed?

1337.16what is a pencil baitJUPITR::KILEYTue Mar 13 1990 11:535

    In the game one of the lures is a pencil bait. What real life lure
    would this equate to. A floating rapla ?

    I'd agree with both of you. I'm still trying to buy the game but I
    think I'll end up renting it again. I hope if you guys uncover any
    "secrets" you'll pass them on !

    regards, Don
1337.19FIRST PLACE, NO BIG DEAL!!!!!GENRAL::HUNTERfrom SUNNY Colorado, WayneThu Mar 15 1990 13:2318
    	While sick last week I had a few hours on my hands that were going
    to NO GOOD USE. So, I got in a few days on the water with the
    Nintendo. Ended up with the BEST DAY OF FISHING of MY LIFE!!! (I just
    HOPE that ONCE in my lifetime I have such a day on the WATER.) Ended
    up catching a MEASLY 14 fish from Lake More. Largest was only 16.0
    pounds. Total for the day was 103.8 pounds of fish. I WAS GREATLY
    DISAPPOINTED WITH THE GRAPHICS FOR TAKING FIRST PLACE!!!!! All I got
    was the SAME flashing lights and etc. that you get when you pass a
    lower grade.  NOTHING SPECIAL!!!!!
    	I am STILL learning San Lake, though. Only caught 8 fish, lost 4
    lures to BREAK OFFS from HAWGS, and ended up with a total of 92 pounds
    from it so far. NOW, if I can just figure out how to land one of those
    HAWGS that are larger in the graphics than the 16 pounder. :-(

    re. -.1
    	Don, if you want some spoilers as to how to fish the lakes, send me
    MAIL. I don't want to make it easier for EVERYONE and spoil ALL THEIR
    FUN of learning the software tricks to the game. :-)
