1319.1 | Could be the foodsaver | RIPPLE::SAUNDERS_MI | Where the h*ll is Issaquah? | Wed Feb 07 1990 20:55 | 17 |
| Hi,
The unit you are describing is probably called a food saver. I
have just recently purchased one myself after seeing the shows on
tv. But only just bought my own after talking with several people
that have them, mostly for freezing the salmon out here. The tv
price is about $289-$299. If you have a Costco near you, their
price is $279.00 for the same unit. The major difference is, the
Costco package has more of the extras that you have to order special
from the TV ads. It is the same unit, made by the same company.
I just packaged a months worth of meat last night in about 30-45
minutes with it. Bought in bulk, the meat varied from about $.40
less per pound to about $.80 less per pound than if bought at a
regular super market.

| What do you get for the extra $234? I haven't seen the TV ads, but
what you're describing sounds a lot like the "Garden Freshness
Sealer" in the Burpee (seeds and gardening tools) catalog. They
sell it for $44.95.
From the catalog:
"This compact unit creates a bag of any length, vacuums
out the air and heat-seals it shut. Use it to freeze
vegetables, fruits, meats or boil-in bag, and microwave
meals. It cuts the 11 1/2" poly bags to desired length;
just fill with food, position it, seal, and freeze."

Thanks guys you really have been a big help
.1 not sure what you mean by costco, is this some kind of discount
house and what are the dimensions of you food saver and how much
extra a good supply of bags if not on roll like the one from burpee.
Is the bags boilable also, need official name so i can research
discount place around massachusetts. tks again. I will diffently
buy one for garden, fishing, hunting, scouting, and backpacking.
It should pay for itself in a very short time.

| Costco is a membership discount store dealing mainly in groceries
and some other things, like tools, tires, whatever they get a deal
on in purchasing. The primary benefit from using them is buying
in bulk or large quantities (of food). You get from 10-60% lower
prices than retail grocery chains. I am not familiar with the Burpee
product, although I have seen the one advertized on TV for 39.95.
I think you getwhat you pay for. The product is called Foodsaver
and the bags are foodsaver bags. You can purchase them directly
from the manufacturer or, like I do, get them through Costco at
a significantly lower price. The unit also vacuum seals jars and
a special canister set. It is about 2'x1'x4", does not take up
much storage space at all and sets up in less than 1 minute. Comes
down just as fast. It seems to be fairly well put together and
supposedly gets a 21lb vacuum. The bags are reusable (make sure
there washed well). Check out your local discount or membership
houses. I believe Costco is a nationwide chain.
