1317.0. "Fishing Bargains" by ARCHER::PRESTON (Be more tactful... fathead!) Thu Feb 01 1990 15:30

It may be the time to start a topic on this, seeing as the Fishing Expo
is upon us and thoughts of ice-out are glimmering on the horizons of
    our minds...

I'd like to start a note on current BARGAINS to be found wherever
tackle is sold. There are enough people in this file familiar with what
good stuff costs to alert the others to the good deals that pop up from
    time to time.

My "good deal" was finding a beautiful 6' IM6 graphite heavy-action
spinning rod at LL Beans for only $39.95. They are usually priced at
$49.95 (which I think is still a good deal), but are currently on sale
at the store in Freeport for $10 off. This rod is light, strong, and
beautifully finished - and has the unsurpassed LL Bean guarantee
behind it. I look forward to a lifetime of fishing pleasure with this
beauty..! I plan to use it primarily for worm fishing, since the last
time a big smallie nailed an 8" worm I was fishing, I couldn't set the
hook with that 7' med action Cabela's rod I currently use for everything.

BTW, the prices for lures at Beans are not bad at all, although the
    selection is somewhat limited...

Also, I bought an Abu Garcia Ultracast Sprint reel through Bass Pro for
$31.95, which includes a free spare spool *and* an Abu Garcia Ultracast
SPORTS BAG...! Yippee..! Looks like a darned decent reel for the money:
15% (claimed) greater casting distance, and a 6.0:1 retrieve to boot.

If anyone is looking for a Doel Fin. The price in the Cabela's Catalog
is $39.95. I'm still a little sceptacle about the efficiency of these
units. If there so good why has'nt a major motor producer built one
into their motors. Northern Bass is at the show and a lot of the
merchandise that they had was the same price as Bass Pro. The hook
honer was around $39.00 and the new Ninja prop was $19.95, "Suprise"
you will need an a adaptor with some motors they are $7.50. I asked
them if these prices are show prices and they said they are the same
    at their store.

Sorry I got all of there pumpkin seed gitzits.

BASS PRO has last years ABU baitcasters for sale like the SYNCRO
that goes for $79 for $59 and other ones to boot, not the ultra cast
      version :>(

Les I received a Syncro two speed for Christmas I haven't used it yet
but I'm itchin to put some line on it. I purchased some at the show
at a reasonable price" Same as Bass Pro for Tri Max " One of the unique
features is that you change the spools in about 15 seconds. I'll drop
you a line when I finally wet some line with it. Your right about "T"
Lures they did have some nice rubber goods. My buddy and I ended up
buying a lot of Gitzit leads. Speaking of Gitzits" Zylas has some
on sale $12.00 per 100. Some of the bags are mixed with 2 1/2" to
4" but they have quite a few colors they are put out by Bassin Man.

The XLT Synchro 1 and 2 are both ultra cast versions and are indeed on
sale in the Bass Pro Shops (BPS) for $59.99 verses the centrum prices of
    $79.00.

Also the BPS has all the Zara Spooks on sale for $3.49. This is a
great price because I have seen spools selling for as high as $6.49.

I recently ordered a new reel and a bunch of soft plastic lures (Kalin
worms, etc) from Bass Pro, and wonder now if I should have bought a few
spooks as well, but my wife has this resistance threshold that I try
not to cross... "what? another lure??"

a fellow whom works in the same building my wife does mentioned to her
yesterday that he noticed my boat in the driveway. He was talking about
his boat & explained to her that Its better that I be off fishing
rather than hootin around the bars with the boys and pickin up easy
woman. Just use that explanation next time your wife asks why you had
to buy more fishing tackle. Lord know that no respectable fisherman
would be caught hangin around a bar pickin up babes? Right?

Now iffen we was down in Dixie where them good ol'e boys have nuff
sence to combine their barooms with the pool hall & tackle shops, then
you would need to come up with another explaination. Like... Ahhh, Yes
dear me an Bubba are just goin to do some "red Snapper" huntin.
Yes dear, We has to go a night, theys just don't bite in the daylight.

Gang,
I was driving down to the Auburn Mall last night, when I went by the Fair
in Worcester I noticed a sign that said Fishing Expo 16-17th. If any of you
remember from last year this had some good prices. Usaully they bring in a few
Reps from the different companies and also have a sale on all the fishing items.
Which last year was quite a selection for a department store.
I'm sure anyone in the Worcester area will also see this advertised in
the paper soon. So far I've only seen the sign on the side of the Store.

The Fair is right on RT 20 at the Worcester/Auburn line. From Hudson
you could take 290 to 20 east, probably the longest way, but the
easiest. There prices on pfd's and paddles are reasonable.

1317.15 Fair Sale THUMBS DOWNDEMING::MATTSONMon Feb 19 1990 09:2422
    Gang,

Did anyone stop at the Fair this weekend for the sale. I was really
unimpressed. The Rapalas that were on sale were only the real light
ones, The Uncle Josh Pork rinds I couldn't find anything in black or
brown. The the ABU/GARCIA rep told me that they're wasn't any such real
as the new Ambassaduer Mag Plus that I must have mistaken it for the Lite
series of reels(Gee that's funny BPS must be making these reels up,and
the person in the notes file that said he just bought one must be
    imagining it too).
I also saw some items from a company called Silsco. I asked the Rep
what kind of guaranty these reels carry, and his reply was the same as
everyone else, break it and you bring it back. I asked where is this in
writting and he told me that nobody advertises that you can do this. I
said ABU sure does. Everything else I saw was ok but still not the
quality of items you can get at BPS or even some of the local Tackle
    shops.
Is this me just being overcritical or did other folks notice this
at the Fair this year also. Last year I thought was much better in
regards to the Sale and mechandise offered.

Gary...I agree....just another variation of the old "bait and
        switch"...excuse the pun.

The $1.99 specials on Rebel, Heddon and other lures was a big
box of lures with colors that...well you know....only "YOU" would
    	love....:-)

Count me in the group of those that were disappointed. DID find
the color gitzit's that I was looking for....so it wasn't an
    	entire waste of time.

It seems that there is a fishing stuff big sale at K Mart each spring.
(I don't think that mini-sale a while back was it), and they have put
most of the decent stuff on sale, not the odd pieces. Problem is,
sometimes I (we) don't hear about it until it's almost (or already)
    over.

The first guy to hear of it should post it so we can all pounce on it
    this year!

Can anybody tell where my thoughts have been lately? It's not obvious
is it? I have a photo of me holding a smallie wearing a t-shirt and
shorts - and Terminal Angler hat (me, not the fish) on the dock at Winni
last summer. It's almost more than I can stand, but anticipation is
    half the fun, right?

1317.18Maybe had to ask for a deal.CURIE::POPIENIUCKMon Feb 19 1990 14:1925
I think I did OK. I took a trip to The Fair on Friday with the express
purpose of buying a Walker Downrigger set up. I wanted the package
deal that includes everything except the ball. The model is the dual
holder, electric. I finally met a rep there for Walker. I was looking
for a sign and was about to leave when I saw this guy setting up a
tripod gizmo with 2-3 models on it. I asked him about what I was
after and he said he had a demo unit, new and in the box, just been
demo'd a couple times. It happened to be the saltwater model (more
corrosion resistance). I think It was called the Offshore, or
something like that. (Sorry, can't recall the model.) Anyway, he sold
me the whole package for $350 and threw in a couple extra rigging
pieces besides and gave me his card in case I have any questions.

I believe I got the top of the line model and the whole kit package
besides, for what I would have paid for just the downrigger freshwater
model itself without the extra gear.

This guy went out of his way for me, couple trips back to his truck.
My experience has been that if you're looking for a deal then ask for a
deal. The worst that can happen is you'll be told no.

Anyway, I'm real happy and can't wait to try out the unit come spring.

I have to confess. I went to the NH fishing show in the Manchester, NH
armory. I had what you call 'big time credit'. It was my birthday. I
had brought back my BIG xmas gift, a 250+ leather brief case, and I am
supposed to do somthing for my 'quit smoking' anniversary. 12 years. I
was planning on buying either a PT33P or the new team Daiwa. I was
told I didnt need to spend all that much, just buy the 5 ball bearing
Samurai by Daiwa. $100 vs 65. BUT they dont have any!!
By Monday I could not stand it any longer. I called BPS.
    Got some worms
    Vest for 'hard' running. $44.
Two Canvas shirts (you know those 'Sales' they have when you call?)
Color C lector (always wanted this.)
The 5 Ball bearing SAmurai (left handed)
I was just gonna buy another Bionic Blade, but for a few bucks more I
more I got the combo with the Express I. Like sort of an extra reel?
      $89 bucks..

I cant begin to tell you how much better I feel. In about 6 days Ill
be even better --MY wife said last night -- OH - I thought you were
going to spend 4-500 at the show. I saved about $200 bucks by her
    calculations!!
1317.20SEMIU5::MATTSONWed Feb 21 1990 09:0413
Jack,
I wish I could use that logic with mt wife. But dear by buying 1000
worms in bulk,1000 Gitzits, and 5 Bass Pro rod and reel combo's, I save over
300 dollars. I can't understand why your complaining.
This is almost as good as the note I read a while ago about the guy
that told his wife he won his new boat in a fishing tournament. It sure is
easy to dump a bundle on Bass Pro with all those items at great prices.
Overall it sounds like you enjoyed yourself and your feeling much
better spending some hard earned cash on fishing items. By the way you were
right I already want a bigger boat. Hey maybe I can win one at the next
tournament!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1317.23Yeah, K-Mart carries salt water stuffTOMCAT::PRESTONKnow-whut-I-mean Vern?Fri Mar 02 1990 12:2615
Can't speak for every K-Mart, but the one's in Chelmsford, Nashua, and
Laconia do have salt water items. HOWEVER, since I know nearly nothing
about salt water fishing - except that it requires heavier and more
    expensive tackle.

BTW - I stopped at the Nashua K-Mart yesterday and their sale items are
good but a little spotty (that means I wish there were more things on
sale) but the savings on the sale items were respectable. I got a
Mann's Rat (weedless top-water bait) for (if I recall) a little less
    than $2.

Oh yeah, check out JR Discount on DW highway (north bound side) near
the ADAP. They're putting out their tackle, and the prices are great!
Problem is the selection is a bit poor, some orphan brands, etc.
They have a bunch of name-brand reels and the prices look pretty good.
Price of mono line is too high, though. Last year they had a big table
of lures, all $2. Most were oddballs, but some decent name brands...

BUT, I got a nice Plano utility box (perfect for a small worm box) for
only $3. Same thing at K-Mart was $4.88.

Worth checking out if you're in the area...

Jim B - If you dont know already, Zylas in Merrimack NH is VERY GOOD on
prices on salt water tackle. And they have a tremendous selection. You
may already know this. I just returned from K-mart here on 101A and I
didnt notice enough stuff - in salt water or prices -- that would make
me want to go back. I dont know where you live, but its like a 'Spags'

The sales flyer comes with issues of Popular Science (APRIL)
magazine. From my experience in the past, it is a
separate sale from the flyers found in the store, etc..
Also from experience, you need to bring in a copy of
the sales flyer to identify the sale. Which means
having to buy a copy of PS.

The sale is on from March 25 - April 7 at K-Mart.

I expect that there will be another sale with flyers
sent out in general mailing. Their regular sale may
go on the same time as this one, but not have the same
items as found in this flyer on sale, etc.etc. Your guess
	is as good as mine.

I have listed a good 75% of the items on sale, hope you

I got a couple of packs of Bassin' Man gitzit jigs for $1 ea, a Bomber
    shallow-med crankbait for $2, a pack of 5 10" (yeah, that's TEN inch!)
Culprit worms (for lunker hunting) for $1 and a pack of 8" Creme
plastic "Reel Eels", also for $1. (they look like giant leeches!)

Their $2 lure table is out, mostly with the same junk they had last
year, but I did find that Bomber crankbait, so it was a deal. There
were a few other buys there, but I didn't want to further antagonize
the wife who gives me the "talk" whenever I come home with "more
    fishing stuff..!"

They also have a good selection of quality hooks (prices seen ok), and
several shelves of name brand tackle boxes. Example: Plano 757 for $25 -
is that a good price? I think it compares to Bass Pro. Lots of average
grade rods (Zebco etc), and some name brand reels at fairly good prices.

They also had spools of 40lb test line (old-looking label said they
were made by Berkley) for $1 apiece, and a bunch of monofilament from
Korea for the same price. Name brand line is no bargain.

1317.40I dunno, it jus' broke...ARCHER::PRESTONA cat... in the rat race of lifeMon Apr 16 1990 13:0326
I was just wondering if anybody out there has bothered to compare the
various brands of minnow type crankbaits. I have a few Rapalas (which
are the finest quality) a few Rebels (almost as fine - seem to work
just as well) and the Asian-made K-Mart and Bass Pro Shops type.

I was fishing with a friend of mine on Saturday - his first time - and
he managed to break the bill off one of my silver floaters (how I don't
know) and it's one of those asian types. This makes me wonder:

Would it have broken if it were a Rapala (or Rebel)? If so, I'm glad
it was the cheaper kind. If not, maybe I should just stick with Rapalas
and Rebels, and spend more $$ (ouch)

Does anyone out there have an opinion on the value of these cheaper
imitations? They certainly *look* good to me, but the construction
seems just a little less sturdy than the top-o-the-line. We all lose
lures, so should I stick with el-cheapos and stay ahead in the $$
department, or will I have better success with the "best" stuff?

Also, while we're at it, what colors do you guys favor? I've got a few
baits in chartreuse and bright orange, but the only ones that have
caught fish for me are the silver or perch colors.

    Ed,

This is probably just personal preference but - I have alot of
Rapalas and nothing else. My favorite colors are white/blue backs
and perch. I do have a couple of other colors but hardly ever use
them. As far as size goes, the #9, #11, #13's get alot of use, with
the bigger #18 seeing limited use.
During our trips into the boundary waters, probably half of my fish
have been taken on #9 or #11 blue backs (ol' blue). Everything from
big crappie, walleye, smallies, and northern, including a 15 lb.
northern. Although the big northern tend to leave holes in the bodies.
Of course there is the problem of getting multiple trebles out of that
toothy mouth, but then that's the price you pay.

The el cheapos have lousy hardware which often rusts. They (and also
Rebels) tend to run cockeyed, so you're constantly tuning 'em. I like
blue/white or gold/black, but mostly for floaters. Chatreuse works
better on regular "fat" type crank baits for me. I haven't tried 'em
for bass yet, but I'll bet the Bomber "A" series would be good. Great
quality and even King salmon can't destroy 'em.
I NEVER buy that brand x garbage. Think about it, if the guys who fish
for a living thought they were any good, they'd use 'em, and I know
they get their lures for free.

Buying various crankbait quality/colors probably depends on what
    you use them for.

I fish a section of the Merrimack river for smallmouth. I tend to
like a color I refer to as nuclear green. I also prefer an "el cheapo"
as one of the best methods I've found to catch them is to cast the lure
into a cement wall and let it fall into the water. About 8 out of every
10 smallmouths I catch there is done that way.

Needless to say this does a number on the lure after a while. I
just can't see using a good lure for that. Especially since action has
little to do with anything most of the time.

On the other hand, if your casting to open water or trolling, it's a
pain to have to keep adjusting them so I prefer a shad rap then.

To each their own I guess........RAYJ
1317.45I'll be happy to endorse Rapalas!TOMCAT::PRESTONA cat... in the rat race of lifeTue Apr 17 1990 14:1317
You're right, I forgot that Rebels tend to run cockeyed. That makes
them inferior to Rapalas in my book...

I've used the Bomber Long "A" (gold color made famous by John Easter)
for bass, and they do work well - and don't run cockeyed. Put them on
my list of top quality baits.

As far as the pros who don't use brand X hardware, I'd say it's because
the name brand manufacturers just hand 'em brand new lures by the
truckload. If they sent ME a few cases, I wouldn't be tempted by the
brand X stuff either! I like the argument that says if they work - and
are cheap - then why not use them. There's places where the risk of
losing or damaging them is a little too high for me to comfortably use
$5 Rapalas. In fact I got a great response from a BIG bass (yeah, I
missed him) from a $.79 Spags River Runt imitator.

Well, It's my dad's birthday coming up and he hinted he'd like

thru Feb 24, 10:00 am to 9:00 pm.

They are located at 522 Amherst Street (route 101A) in Nashua. Look for
the banner out front. Park in back.

Mostly they have clothing and footwear, but I noticed a bit of fishing
stuff, too, specifically a dozen or so rods. I saw a Shimano Bullwhip
(what a dumb name!) for $25 - there were others, but I don't need
another fishing rod (what? I must still have the flu!). They also had
spare spools (Daiwa, etc), waders, backpacks, luggage, some books, etc.
They say they will be adding new stuff daily for the duration of the
sale. They take Master card and Visa too.

I got a couple of good deals there today during lunch - some of the
stuff is up to 60% off. The real good stuff - like Maine Hunting Shoes,
Baxter State parkas, Maine Warden parkas - is more like 25%-35% off.

Be advised... there's lots of oddball stuff with weird colors, styles,

Martial,

Save yourself the $$$ and install it yourself. It's really not difficult.
The only thing you need to be carefull of is the location and positioning
of the transducer. Make sure that it is centered between any lift strakes
to help minimize turbulence. I found that the transducer should be set
about 1/4" below the hull and with a slight forward angle, but that was
on my boat. I suspect that you'll have to play with the adjustment of the
transducer to achieve maximum performance at high speed after you get the
boat in the water.

Good luck.

gap with silicone. Wipe off excess. Open Beer and watch it dry.
You will have to figure the best way to rout the wire over/through
the transom. I wouldn't drill any holes for that though.

While we are on the subject. When I was at the centrum for the
show, I talked to the EAGLE reps for a while. We got onto the subject
of Fiberglas instillation of transducers. They said that it has been
discovered that placing a gob of silicone on the inside of the hull
and sticking the transducer to it doesn't work in the long run. They
said that you may experience excessive noise wile underway. They
recommend that you use a epoxy for that type of installation. Any one
    have that problem?

I think bass-o-matic was questioning the placement of his unit, not the
transducer, i've spoken with him and i'll be giving him a hand. Keith,
I think most units come with the kickup brackets these days, I know the
TCRs come with them. No problems... I've installed about 5 of them so
far (3 of my own and 2 friends) and moved a couple of mine a couple
    times...

Hello to all you fishing people out there. I am new to
this so bear with me please. I have been fishing for many
years so I have a large assortment of equipment. I have
bought all kinds of lures, so I think I know prices
fairly well. The other day I was at Caldors in Methurn &
Stoneham. 2/16/91 & 2/17/91 Caldors fishing section has
a basket full of lures. Zara Spook, Rebel Shads, Heddon
Torpedos, Heddon repals, rattle traps, & other different
lures. Everything in this basket was $2.50 a piece.
Each time I bought these type lures I have much more for
them. It a deal in my opinion.

    Good luck

Stopped by the local Wal-Mart yesterday on my lunch hour. All their
rods were 25% off, so I grabbed the Daiwa I've had my eye on. But as I
was leaving the fishing aisle a young employee came out around the
corner with a cart running over with lures. I seen a bare endcap and
asked if there was going to be a mark down. The reply I got was "yes,
everything will be $.50. Not 50% off, but 50 cents!!! I naturally
summized the lures were probably no-names, wrong! I grabbed a nearby
cart and proceded to load up. Some of what I got included, Shad-Raps,
#11 Rapalas, Dance-N-Shads, 10 packs of power worms, 25 packs of
maribou jigs, 10 packs of power grubs, Rat-l-traps, and assorted jigs.
I figured I got about $100 worth of lures for $17. I only wish I
would've had more money on me, and one less pager.
