1307.0. "Fishing Instructors Needed" by CASPRO::FLOOD (I am the NRA and GOAL) Wed Jan 17 1990 23:10

The Mass Natural Resources Wildlife and Fisheries division has a Volunteer
Fishing Instructor program. It is a two step program;

1) Volunteer attends 5, 2 hour training sessions for first level
certification which then requires 10 hours of volunteer service
   at fishing shows clinics etc.

2) Instructor who does 20 hours of volunteer service plus conducts one 8-10
hours training clinic(actually 5 - 2 hour classes) teaching primarily
young kids/parents about soft or hard water fishing becomes a master
   certified instructor.

I am currently signed up as an instructor in training in the Harvard, Mass
group and assisting in teaching a 10 hour hard water clinic to young
kids. I will not be able to take my formal instructor training till we get
8-10 volunteers. Sooooo...... I am trying to recruit volunteers to sign up
into the program - the next training program will hopefully start in early
March and run into beginning of April. Why am I doing this you ask since
the volunteer time may take away from real fishing time. Well, since I am
single with no kids to impart my wisdom(?) to, this gives me an opportunity
to do it. It also gives me an opportunity to pay back the non-family people
in my younger life who took the time to teach me fishing when my parents
had no interest in it. Hopefully some of you out there who live in the
Harvard, Ayer, Westford, Concord, Acton down to Bolton, Stow areas might be
interested also. If you are, send me vaxmail and I will send a hardcopy
registration form, which you can complete and return to me so I can turn it
into our group leader. Please don't worry about formalities or what you
know or don't know. We need people with all fresh water fishing skills.
If you have any questions, ask them as replies to this note and I will
either answer or get an answer for all to see.

Johnny R. and Jim,

Sorry for not getting back sooner -tried last week, but the network let me
down. I am currently doing an all hands on dec assignment in MKO as I am
currently excess from US administration. In any case, since I am doing
temporary assignements, I must use TSN to connect to my CHM node and last
week while I was typing out a response to both of you, tsn dropped me out
and all was lost. Let's try again today...

The Harvard group that I belong to doesn't imply that you must be a Harvard
resident, it is just the geographical way the state has been divided up and
also Harvard recreation dept. has been a strong user of our clinics. Our
Group hopes to spread out in the harvard, maynard, acton, concord, stow,
ayer, littleton areas as we grow in number - a typical class runs for two
hours and the clinic days can be 4-8 hours long. We would like to have 2-4
instructors per course. The courses are for ice fishing, softwater fishing
and instructor training courses. Clinics related to the classes are called
catch and cook. We also do single days clinics that are not tied to any
class structure.

Your individual skill level is not a prime concern, I for one enjoy fishing
but am not the cunsummate pro. It is more important to be interested in
teaching and developing skills in kids as well as adults who want to learn
to fish. The classes are relatively informal with all instructors
interacting together rather than one instructor running the whole class.

We are just completing my first class on ice fishing - we had 4 two hour
classes and will conclude this saturday with a catch and cook day on Bare
Hill pond in Harvard ice permitting... The next classes will be the
instructor training that occur one night a week for 2 hours over a 4 week
span plus one field day( i.e. outside demos etc.) The instructor students
prepare the classes and the certified instructors critique them. To become
a certified instructor you must complete the 10 hour course. To become a
master certified instructor you must help to lead a 10 hour fishing course.
Although I haven't taken the instructor training yet, I have completed my
fishing course portion.

We keep a time sheet of all our time, class preparation, travel time, class
time, clinic time etc and we turn this into the F+W guy down in Westboro,
he in turns summits the totals for the program to the federal goverment,
who in turn turn over monies to him to support more fisheries programs. We
are all volunteers and receive no compensation. However we do have a
banquet in March at the Marlboro rod and gun club. Cost of the banquet is
very low and we have a hugh raffle, most the major tackle companies supply
equipment for the raffle. I am told it is a lot of fun and everybody goes
home with prizes.

We plan to start the next instructor training in March, we would like to have
around 8-10 students - instructor students can be 12-13 years old(boy scout
age) on up and sex is no factor(M or F). We currently have 34 other
students who signed up at the Centrum plus others we may not know of yet. I
can/will send out the registration form if you are interested and will
contact you as soon as the class has been set up.

I have enjoyed the short bit of time I have put in so far - it also has
helped the winter hard water time go faster. Let me know if you have any
more questions - look forward to seeing you sign up.

1307.6Training sessions scheduled - any more takers?CASPRO::FLOODI am the NRA and GOALTue Mar 20 1990 01:2623
The fishing instructor course will be starting 4/10 and run 4 consecutive
weeks. Steve Sennott, our group leader will be contacting all people who
signed up with me as well as those who signed up at the centrum. This will
cover people who are in the Harvard, Ayer, Westford, Berlin, Lancaster,
Hudson, Maynard, Acton areas. We have approximately 16 students signed up
and if 10 of these people are serious we will have a very nice sized
instructor group capable of teaching a lot of kids. We had our annual
banquet at the Marlboro Rod and Gun club several Saturdays ago. Greating
meal, good speakers and some great door and raffle prizes. Also awards to
the oustanding instructors in each group as well as awards for the teenager
and adult instructors who made the greatest contributions to the program.
The Harvard group totaled some 400+ volunteer hours with just 3 Master
instructors and 3 field(teenager) instructors. We came in very high on the
list of 12 groups in the state and hope to increase that number greatly for
next year. One instructor who came in the highest in the state and also won
the outstanding award put in almost 800 hours - granted he is retired but
he really puts everything into the program and is a great guy with a
lifetime of stories.

If anyone else wants to get into the program, drop me a mail message and I
will send along the application.
