1295.0. "Congratulations" by SHAPES::BROWNM () Thu Jan 04 1990 10:21

    I know it's late but - CONGRATULATIONS to

    Tommy Pickering for becoming Individual World Champion !

    If anyone else out there has met Tommy, you'll know that he's also the
    world nicest bloke.

    And the Welsh team for winning the team Championship.

    I noticed the USA are catching up in the ratings. What do you reckon
    would happen if the World Championships were held in the states? Would
    England and Italy still be the best?

    .1 OK I'll bite. Worlds Champion WHAT?

    Fisherman!, Angler, whatever ya wanna call it!, It sure would be
    interesting to have a match in the US, matches are all about QUANTITY
    of fish, not so much QUALITY, it might be interesting to see who
    catches the most, when match anglers over here use bloodworm/maggots,
    and in the US spinning/plugs are used a lot. Sure is a different way of
    fishing.

    We have a rateing over here that I thought was worldwide? Its called
    the Internatational Gamefish Association ( I.F.G.A.) It regulates types
    of tackle used , size of line, length of leader and method of landing
    various types of Gamefish.

    I'll see if I can dig up the address for you. I know they have records
    of quite a few species and the object is Quality not Quantity.

1295.4Not the same..TMCUK2::MOXLEYThe Wild HeartThu Jan 04 1990 12:286

    I don't think that were talking gamefish here, our match fishing (and
    in Europe too) is based around coarse fish, cyprinids (Carp and
    family), and other species, not the game fish (Salmon and Trout
    families), so the rules are different. We too have a gamefishing
    association, which presumably lay down the same sort of rules.
1295.5World Coarse Fishing Championships (I think)SHAPES::BROWNMThu Jan 04 1990 12:424
    I think the world Championships should allow any type of single hook
    fishing. It's stupid that they ban the feeder or the bomb.

1295.6I think it louses somthing in the translation.PACKER::GIBSONDTN225-5193Thu Jan 04 1990 13:1619

    Got me again.. Whats a feeder or a bomb. Is that like the story of the
    fellow who went into the same diner every morning about 8 O'clock to
    disply his pickup truck loaded with Bass. The game warden tried to
    follow him but never could find out his secret fo catching all those
    fish. well one day he asked him how it was that he caught so many. The
    fellow told the Game warden that if he wanted to find out, that he
    would have to go fishing with him. Next morning the fellow took the
    game warden out in his skiff, rowed out to the middle of the creek and
    lit a cigar. The game warden noticed that the fellow did not have a
    fishing pole, just a lunch pail. The fellow reached ito the lunch pail
    and pulled out a stick of dynomite and lit the fuse with his cigar.

    The Game warden said to the fellow "Hey you can't use Dynomite for
    fishing" The fellow handed the lit dynomite to the game warden and
    said" You gonna talk ? or you gonna fish?"

1295.7Just names...TMCUK2::MOXLEYThe Wild HeartThu Jan 04 1990 13:2416

    Translations:

    Feeder = swim feeder (a "swim" is the place your fishing, your "patch"
    of water)
    The device consists of a tube of clear of green-tinted perspex which
    you stuff maggots/worms/breadcrumbs, and it is released right next to
    your hookbait. It's attached to the line just near the lead when your
    bottom fishing (ledgering as we call it)

    Bomb = Arlesly Bomb (named after its inventor), basically a pear-shaped
    lead (up to 1oz) used for bottom fishing.

    Actually I'm not sure that this IS prohibited in match fishing?

    Simon,

    The World Championships rules state that a float of somesort (Pole or
    running line) must be used.

    There have been many a world championships where England have wanted to
    use the feeder because in the latter half of the match, the fish have
    moved beyond the distance that a waggler can be cast to.

    (Just for Walt);
    Waggler is a float, either straight or straight with a body at the
    bottom. The line passes through the bottom end of the float and then
    continues to the hook etc. It is used for fishing at distance or in
    windy conditions because of it's stability.

1295.9It's all in the Names...FOOZLE::SCHOLZRon....and thanks for all the fishFri Jan 05 1990 15:2712
    For those of us that were raised in the States with a "cane-pole",
    "bobber" and "nightcrawlers" there isn't much difference.....:^)

    In Ohio the carp fishing is exactly the same....except they make up
    their own "dough-balls" from their secret receipts.......

    In the other parts of the mid-west we fished for "bull-heads" and
    "green-trout" depending wheather it was a lake or river we were on.

    Really not all that much different........

    Tight lines (in both countries) Ranger Ron
