1266.0. "Coonass comes to town!" by ABACUS::TOMAS (Joe) Thu Oct 19 1989 18:06

I just spoke with Coonass and he's planning to spend the weekend with me on
the 28th and 29th. I was thinking of taking Bob up to the Merrimack River
in Concord for some smallmouth fishing. Anyone care to join in with us??

    Joe,
    You may want to take him to the Nashua River, he will probably feel
    more at home there....

Bob needs to be somewhere on Sunday night, so Sunday A.M. may be open.

Let's see what falls out with everyone else.

Jim...I had some great fishing for smallies a couple of weeks ago on the
Merrimack plus I landed a 4+ lb largemouth. That's why I thought the
Merrimack would be good. I'm open to suggestions, though.

1266.5COONASS UPDATEABACUS::TOMASJoeMon Oct 23 1989 11:2420
Bob just called. He's staying at the Hilton in Lowell but will be without a
car until the weekend. He'd love to get together to down a few brews and
trade some stories some night this week. How does Thursday night sound for
those of you that would like to meet the famous cajun?? We could meet at
the Hilton and either stay there or find some sleazey joint near-by.

Extremely high water conditions on the Merrimack River will probably make
smallmouth fishing next to impossible. I'll keep my eye on the
river...maybe it will drop by the weekend. Otherwise, we're planning on
doing some trout fishing on Saturday A.M. On Sunday, if the river hasn't
dropped, we'll probably go back for more trout and do some smallie fishing
at the same lake.

BTW...DonMac and I went out this past Saturday and picked up 10 nice
Rainbows (15-17") within 2 hours. It was a tad breezey (i.e. whitecaps!!)
and a bit nippy, but a great time!

OK...who wants to get together with Coonass Bob on Thursday??

     Somebody just make a decision and post it here re: what time Thurs.
    the 26th, and where. If it's the lowell hilton, how do I get there
    from 495N from Marlboro? If it's someplace else, how do I get there?

    I cant make the 26th --

    But the weekend look like maybe one of the last 'nice' ones to fish in.
    Whats the game plan for that? (I forgot to look at what note thats in,
    but WE SHOULD have a good turnout. Im game for either day -- or both.
    Oh Bandit. Want to fish w/Coonas?
1266.14ABACUS::TOMASJoeWed Oct 25 1989 11:5413
The weekend fishing plans are still somewhat up in the air. I'm definitely
taking Coonass out to pick up some rainbow trout and maybe do some
smallmouth fishing on Saturday. Depending on who can or can't join us on
Sunday will dictate where we go. So far, the Merrimack is still quite
swollen and I suspect will be real difficult to fish. In addition, Bob has
plans for early Sunday evening so we'd have to knock off by mid-afternoon.

Has anyone checked out Stumpfield lately??

-HSJ-

BTW...how about if we plan to meet Bob at his hotel (Hilton in Lowell) and
decide where to go from there.

I just spoke with Coonass and he's not really sure how to get there (he took
the bus in...no car). Here's the hotel telephone # to call for directions
(508) 452-1200.

Bob get's out of training about 5:45. Unfortunately, something has come up
and I can't make it tomorrow night, but he's looking forward to meeting with
the rest of you guys. Plan to meet with him about 7:30 or so.

I'm out all tomorrow but will be in on Friday. You guys try to think of
someplace to go on Sunday A.M. (Stumpfield??). Otherwise, I'll just take
Coonass out to my favorite honeyholes and show him some REAL YANKEE FISHIN!

    Directions to the Lowell Hilton:

    From 495 take the lowell connector into downtown lowell, at the end of
    the connector take a left (gorham st.?), then take a right onto rt.
    110, then take 2nd left (across from Ames) onto George St.
    The Hilton is at the intersect of George and Warren.

	If you're thinking about Stumpfield, you'd better check to see if
	boat ramp is open. It was closed last Sunday.
1266.22ABACUS::TOMASJoeFri Oct 27 1989 09:047
I checked the Merrimack River last night and it's still quite swollen and
flowing too fast. So....I think we'll be heading to Bow Lake for some
smallie fishing on Sunday A.M. We'll plan to be at the launch at about 8:00
A.M. for those who migh care to join us. The weather sounds like it will
make for a super day of fall fishing!

1266.23IM going, Im going.CGVAX2::HAGERTYJack Hagerty KI1XFri Oct 27 1989 10:163
    Never been to Bow -- but put some indication on where it is and how.
    I got Clarks, but not here in the office. Whats the time from - say
    amherst,NH -- less than an hour?
1266.24tough launchTOOTER::MACINTYRETerminal AnglerFri Oct 27 1989 10:3018
    Be prepared for a possible rough shallow launch at bow. There are also
    3 launchs, Joe you'd better tell folks which one you'll be at.

    Last weekend Joe and I launch at the west end, I had the *front* wheels
    of my truck (4x4) in about 2' of water. Real shallow and rocky.
    (Bent my trolling motor shaft on the way out...8^(

    The launch at the east end closest to the main lake might be better,
    but use extreme caution while crossing the narrow between the points as
    you head out into the main lake - it was only 2-3' deep in most spots a
    few weeks ago.

    Jack, it's probably around an hour from you...

    Enjoyed getting together with Coonass last night. I may bump into you
    guys on Sunday.

    donmac - don't want to scare folks off, just be prepared for it...
1266.25ABACUS::TOMASJoeFri Oct 27 1989 10:5910
I checked the launch at the east end last weekend. Although the water is
down, it should be ok for me to get my boat in. Don's right about it being
shallow, though. I'd suggest using the electric motor to get out thru the
shallows until you're clear. The state has already pulled a number of rock
markers, but because the water is down, those rock piles are pretty much
high and dry. Now the only concern is those rocks that used to be deep and
may now present a problem. Just go slow.

    Y'all tell Ole Coonass "HI" from me. Sorry I couldn't swing a trip out
    there while he was there. But, that's life. Have fun this weekend. I
    am supposed to be fishing the tail end of a snow storm. So, hope your
    fishing is warmer than mine.
