1256.0. "(leadcore line) look a gift horse in the mouth" by ATSE::URBAN () Wed Oct 04 1989 13:55

While fishing at Winnisquam last weekend I snagged a pile of lead core
line with my anchor. It's in prime condition so I figure I'll play
    with it next time out.

My question is, what is the rule of thumb for depth vs colors out?

( I looked thru the keywords line and trolling and tried a
directory/title and didnt find anything about lead core but I know
      it's been mentioned before)

All the lead core line I've fished with over the years has always
been 10 yards per color...

1256.2Not quite what I was looking forATSE::URBANThu Oct 05 1989 09:506
Ahh..I guess I didnt word that question too clearly. What I'm looking
for is the rule of thumb for how deep you go for each color out while
trolling at a 'slow' speed? You know, 10 feet per color or something
    like that.

It will very quite a bit depending on trolling speed and
lure type, but the rule of thumb is generally 5 ft down for
each color of lead core trolled. My experience (in the days
before downriggers became popular) seemed to be that the
first few colors would tend to go a little bit more then 5 ft
down, but after the water density starts to increase in proportion
to the depth, the leadcore starts to loose it's sinking qualitys.
This is just based on experiences with getting hung up on bottom
in areas that I knew the approximate depth. :-)

Thanks. I can relate to underestimating the depth and hanging up
on the bottom. Then the next guy who drags an anchor comes up with
    the bonus gift.

Maybe lead core users should tag the line with a little note saying
I was trolling x colors out at x mph with a xyz lure so the
guy who finds it will know what not to do! :>)

    Tom,

I think you answered your own question with .2. All things being
equal (speed, lure type etc.) it's about a 1 to 3 ratio, or ten feet
down for every (30 feet) color out.
