1255.0. "Calyume! on a jig!" by PACKER::GIBSON (Have SCUBA, Will Travel, Dtn 225-5193) Tue Oct 03 1989 12:21

The last time I was out fishing for COD was about a week ago. I thought
that I would try out a Calyume light stick attached to my diamond jig
in hopes that it would attract a lunker. Well I did get the first fish
within seconds of the jig hitting the bottom, but the little glowing
green light did not attract the biggest.

Has anyone else tried using these lights for fishing? One of the
negative features is that the chemical luminessance is subject to
stability by cold. What this means is that the deeper and colder the
water is, the less light that the glowstick generates. Just where you
need it most, its the dimmist.

I'll try a few more as I bought a half dozzen in geen and red. But I'm
not real convinced that they work. Maybe if I spray them with fish
    repellent/formula it will help?

I read an article about the advantages of luminescence on lures,
and the bottom line was that less is actually better. For some reason,
too much turns them off, but a little is magic. This was for fresh
water fish, though. Maybe it's different for salt water.

I don't thing that fish *repellent* would help, though - it might
    actually drive them away!!

    	Walt,

Somewhere in this notes file I entered a couple notes on it.
Trying to find them is another matter so I'll just summarize.

I tried both the large and small green calyume light sticks (on
bait though, not jigs) and did not notice any difference over not using
them. I have had people tell me otherwise (which is why I tried
them in the first place) but this conflicts with my own actual
results. Comparisons were fairly easy since I was on a party boat
    at the time.

Cyalume sticks are often used when fishing for swordfish. They are
inserted in a whole (dead) squid and fished very deep at night.
Supposed to be a good way to rod and reel them.

Walt,

I bought some "Lunker Lights" some time ago, and still haven't tried
them. How did you tie them on? On the teaser?

I want to get in one good cod trip before I winterize.

    Art.
They way I hooked the caylume up was I tied a coastlock swivel on my
line, then a double surgens loop on my leader, two dropper loops onto
which I put my "Smurfs" and then another coastlock to a 200 gram Vike
Jig. I tried the caylume on both the top & bottom coastlock at
different times, just to see which one would work the best.

When are you going for COD fish? Where?

                                      Walt

P.S. I am currently doing a study on lobsters & the use of radium salts
was mentioned in various applications as lure augmentation. It seemed
to have little effect or even negative results on attracting lobsta'.
Looks like people will try anything?
