1253.0. "White eye LMB ???" by MERIDN::BMURRAY () Wed Sep 20 1989 11:30

    In the past month I've caught two largemouths over 5.5 lbs out of
    the same small lake here in Ct. I've caught too many 4 pounders
    down to sunfish size lmb to count. The two 5.5 lbr's both have
    one white eye. The smaller ones I've caught have normal looking
    eyes. I'm just wondering what might cause this. I grew up on this
    lake and it has a history for getting very green and murky. No
    gas powered boats are allowed. They will be draining this lake at
    the end of this month to repair a bridge. 8'( I dodn't hink it'll
    ever be the same. Anyone know wht causes this white eye?
    Thanks
    Bob

1253.1Hook in the eye?JUPITR::NEALWed Sep 20 1989 12:414
    Did it look like it works? If not probably a hook through the eye
    at some point in time.

    I caught an 18+ in. smallmouth a couple of years ago that had a
    white eye. It looked clouded over and the fish almost certainly
    had no vision in it.

    I figured it was some sort of cataract due to age, but maybe he
    was hooked in the eye and that was the result...

              If you catch one while ice fishin and it takes more
              than lets say two minutes to get the hook out and you
              return the fish to the water "like your suppose to/like
              I told ya" the eye(s) freeze and they become blind.
