Fishing is my only real hobby. Fishing, watching the fishing
shows that I tape, and reading fishing rags and books seem to take
up enough time (and money!) as it is. I don't dare try and find the
time (or the money!) for another interest. I try and keep as much time
as possible open for the family.

I also enjoy canoeing and camping - which I usually combine with fishing.

In the winter I'd rather ski than ice fish - but ice fishing is a great
deal cheaper than skiing - so I do more ice fishing than skiing.

Another thing I enjoy is making home videos - editing, adding special
effects, dubbing in audio, etc.. But I never seem to have the time to
devout to this. I'm always playing with the idea of putting together a
fishing video - that'd be alot of fun. Hey, maybe I'll start at
Monomonac - yea - that's the ticket - the Harbormaster and I will do
a "how-to" while we're fishing the tournament! That way all you guys
will be able to PURCHASE a copy of "Monomonac: The Movie" to see exactly
how we cleaned all your clocks and won the tournament! 8^)

What do I do other than fish, watch fishing tapes from all the
shows on Saturday, and peruse the Bass-Pro and Northern Bass
    catalogues???

Well, let me see, 2 years ago was the design and construction of a
SMALL 12'X24' fiberglass covered redwood deck. This summer was a
SLIGHT addition to that of a 14'X14' Redwood deck with an 8 point
Gazebo and hot tub. (As you can see I do a little construction.)

Winter time. If GOD had wanted me to fish, he would have made ice
soft and wet!!!! I SKI!!!! (What else does a GOOD, NATIVE COLORADAN
    DO??)

In the meantime, when I DON'T have ANYTHING better to do, I am the
Colorado Springs coordinator for the YMCA Trailblazers parent-child
program. This means that I keep the organization for 4th to 8th grade
children and their parents operating, schedule events, solve problems,
organize campouts, fishing trips, whitewater raft trips, etc. for 8
    pairs of people.

Then, whether I want to or not, I am getting back into being a
mechanic. This is by necessity rather than pleasure. Mainly, because
I haven't found a GOOD mechanic that I can trust to not louse the job
up royally. However, the mechanic skills might come in to use here
shortly if I get a boat and motor and quit playing Pike bait with my
    legs. :-)

Other than that, not much. I play chauffeur for two boys aged 11
and 13. Assist with the coaching of my oldest son's football team.
Team photographer for all the sports teams for both boys. Semi-pro
photographer (Mainly scenery types). And, to top it all off,
    jack-of-all-trades and master of none.

As a small sideline business, I repair radios and TVs, VCR, etc.
for friends and relatives. (Seems that when you put yourself through
college doing this, you make a LOT of friends.) (ALSO, that was a few
moons ago.) But, you NEVER lose those friends and you ALWAYS seem to
    have customers wherever you go

Now, my BEST sideline is whenever I do PLUMBING. Any time I put in
pressurized water lines, there is SURE to be enough water floating
around on the floors after I turn the water on to stock and fish for
    at least a week. :-)

Step one: launch your boat with everyone else at Monomonac

Step two: after everyone else makes it around the corner, go back to the
launch area and get the boat back onto the trailer

Step three: go to a real lake and catch fish

Step four: go back to the launch area at Monotonous, and collect your winnings

     Spare time consumer's?

Well it depends on the time of year.

       - Do some wood work still buying tools
       - do alot of shooting- Firearms and archery
       - Teach Hunter Education for the N.H. Fish & Game
       - Fall season consists of alot of hunting
       - And most of all spending time with the wife.

When I'm not fishing - and that's too often if you ask me (too often that
I'm *not* fishing, that is) - I can be found working in the basement of
the house (condo, actually), trying to finish off a room so that I can
move my desk and other junk from the baby's room. (I started before he was
born, and now he's a year old. If I had to make my living as a carpenter,
I'd be in trouble.) But I really enjoy the work (slow as I am) and it's
beginning to look like something now, so maybe by Christmas...

I read all kinds of things from history to religion to science to
"How-To's", (and of course fishing) and usually chew up a new Reader's
Digest in three days. I also like watching documentaries and nature shows
on TV. My wife thinks I should go on Jeopardy and win us a fortune, but
she never counts all my wrong answers... I love to travel to new places;
the high point so far was spending 2 weeks in England 5 years ago. My
idea of perdition on earth is being trapped in a mall with a woman on an
all-day shopping binge who can't make up her mind.

I am also taking two courses at a time at Harvard U. Extension to finish
up my bachelor's degree (at my age!). And there's always work that needs
to be done to keep the family cars (two 10 year old Volvo wagons) going.

Maybe someday I'll get a Labrador Retriever and some duck decoys and try
to become a yuppie - but I'd probably have to take up flyfishing, though,
so forget that..!

RE: -1 ... Yuppies have the Lab, but the only duck decoys are on the
           cocktail table.

I read a book a week, everything from trash to truth.

I order and pour over catalogs: rods, reels, lures, electronics, boats...
in the course of a year the catalogs that arrive at my house make a pile
about 5 feet tall (if you know me you know that's no exaggeration).

I play in the Bektash Temple Shrine Band, and help to raise the $1.5meg
we spend daily on the Shriners Children's Hospitals.

I maintain two boats, two trailers, two outboards, one canoe: wheel
bearings, lower units, batteries, wiring, teak, gelcoat, canvas...

...what spare time?
1249.11Ray Tadry for B.A.S.S. angler of the yearDEMING::MATTSONWed Sep 20 1989 13:2834
Well this year I really got into fishing much to my wife's dismay.
Many years ago this time of the year I'd be off racing my dirt bikes
every weekend (Motocross). Common sense, old age, time and money cured
me of that. Then before I decided to have a family and own a house
Softball was the answer. 2+ leagues and weekend tournaments for
the last 7 years got to be a drag.
But I still manage to play Basketball and do some sking in the
Winter months. I'm also the family mechanic for all my inlaws. When
ever a vehicle breaksdown Gary get's the call. My house takes up
    a lot of my time. I've installed a pool,built 2 decks,refinished
2 rooms and many various small repairs inside and out.
Spending time with my kids is my biggest priority right now.
I enjoy bringing them to the local Playground where dad can shoot
some Baskets and the kids can run around on the swings, slides, ect.
As I mentioned before I've played in numerous leagues for
Softball,Basketball,Hockey but feel that I had my fun and it's time
to be a dedicated FAMILY MAN.
Fishing really came into play because it's something I can do with
the kids and I used to do a lot of it when I was younger. This year
I bought my boat and got into a Bass Club. So it's worked out great
that I can fish in tournaments to quest that fire always burning
to compete against somebody, but then again take the kids out to
have fun with them, doing the samething,Fishing.
So as Ray said there is life after fishing. But I'm happy with
cutting down on options and concentrating on the Family,House,Fishing
and Golf(I had to keep one sport in there). I even occassionally
get caught watching Football,Baseball,Basketball,Auto and Motorcycle
racing on T.V. and O YA that show watchyamacallit something about
    Bass fishing.

         					Gary
    P.S.
I really enjoy listening to Tadry complain about Les and write
his stupid comments in the Notes File.

Took me a while to think of what I don't do "in my spare time"

Currently I'm taking four courses per sem to finish my BS in
Business Management/Marketing, I'll be done in Dec; thank God.

I spend at least one day per week Scuba diving for Lobst'a and usually
get in one day of fishing for something or other.

Also I spend a lot of time customizing my boat and working on her in
general, So I can have those days Diving & Fishing.

Canoeing burns up a few days each year, usually in spring, summer,&
    Fall.

I spend a bit of time Duck hunting in the fall and walking around in
the woods carrying bows and shotguns and rifles during deer season.

Recently I've gotten into pistol shooting .45ACP & .22 Plates, Bowling
    pins and tin cans.

To fill in my "other spare time" I do all the things my wife wants done
around the house, Woodworking, Landscaping/Gardening ect,ect,ect,......

Oh, and of course I work here also.

Most of spare time that I don't spend fishing I am doing something
relateted to fishing. Going boating is #1. Since the wife is not
into fishing we spend a least one non fishing boating day a week
just cruising to a beach or island or whale watching. Maintaining
the boat is another big time sink. Maintaining the fishing tackle
falls in next (re-rigging handlines after a dogfish attack).
Rod building takes up my evenings and those rainy windy days. Each
rod needs about 30 hours of TLC to put it together meaning I can turn
them around in 2-3 weeks. (get those XMAS orders in early, cod and
standup tuna sticks are my specialty). In the winter I plow snow
to finance to the boat (you can all guess I was on a shoe string
    this summer, think SNOW).

Keeping the grass green and everything in the house in tip top
shape takes up whats left (or in the wifes eyes the others take
    up whats left :-) ).

Lastly the best time spent is with my son, next year outfitted with
his own custom rod he will catch his first fish!

<I have soooo many activities its conflicting with my fishing.>

When I moved to Maine with my wife an 4 kids I bought a farm. Playing
farmer has proven itself to be a full time job, enjoyable but time consuming.
Cutting wood in the Fall and Winter is followed by planting in the Spring. The
Summer is spent beating back the bush, clearing fences and all kinds of other
rustic stuff. Of course critter keeping is a year round task. This year we
had pigs, chickens, ducks, turkeys (the kind with feathers), a horse and a
pack of dogs, not to mention the mandatory army of barn cats.
In between farming chores I try to find some time in the Fall for
hunting. In the Winter I set up a Smelt Shack on the Kennebec River. Its
known locally as the Trump Smelt Towers... a rather impressive structure for
a Smelt Shack. I also head up North Salmon fishing through the ice and again
right after ice out.
Since the farmhouse is 150 years old, I've got a list of "to do's"
a mile long. Everything from patching up the old place to building new
outbuildings.
I also am active in local organizations. I'm on the Board of Directors
of the local gun club and the Little League. I also assist in the coaching of
a flag football team. I think next year I'll be coaching Little League as well.
Kid support is another full time job; four active kids can keep two
parents hopping... hopping mad sometimes ;^)
Wow, looking back at this its no wonder I didn't get my boat in till
July 4th.

Tight Lines,
Paul
1249.16It's rough putting the boat away, but!!!SALEM::EASTERWed Oct 18 1989 15:049
Once the boat is put away then the guns come out; grouse and deer
hunting and if I'am EVER luckey enough I'll go moose hunting. AND,
much like "Captain Bligh" I've made the trip across the "HOT SANDS"
and devote a lot of my time and efforts to the Shriners Childrens
Hospitals. So if any of you guys know of any kids, under the age
of 18, who needs orthopaedic or burns treatment, God forbid, you
can call either one of us and we will take it from there.

    John.
