1238.0. "Help - how to" by DEALIN::MCATEE () Wed Sep 06 1989 18:59

We seek your advice. My fishing seems to be jinxed - can't get any
bass anywhere. Things are so desparate that (1) I went and bought a
portable fish finder for the canoe, (2) have bought topo maps and am
trying lakes and ponds all over the state (Haven't been to Pittsfield
area yet) and (3) am even considering buying bottled fish scent. Now
that stuff may be useful, however, we've never had think of such things
before. Worse yet, my friendly fishing rival neighbor (to whom I taught
the virtues of fishing in the weeds) is becoming condesending. Things
are so bad that I even took a shower before going out last time.

None of the old standbys (e.g. plastic worms, rapalas, moss boss, etc.)
seem to be working. Even bugging (on flyrod) for (small) bass is slow.
We all know the warm months are slow but slow is infinitely better than
    being skunked.

Your advice is welcomed. This is getting serious.

Let's see here.....inventorying all of the good advice I got here and
from those who, for whatever reason, replied directly comes up to
about $134,000. The cheapest of all was Ed's secret bass recipe:
    2 doz crawlers, 1 - 3 to 6 oz sunnie, 1 cup water, 1 tsp cornstarch,
liquify in blender, fold into 1 pkg knox unflavored gelatin, let
harden, use as bait. This only cost me $56 for the new blender I
    had to buy my wife.
1238.7Avoid Secret RecipesDEALIN::MCATEEThu Sep 07 1989 18:448
Stan, so would I! Suggest you pick up one of the fishing mags and
    avoid any secret recipes.

Seriously, bass fishing is wonderful (except for the occassional dry
spells) and you should try it. Unfortunately, I cannot, in good
conscience, give you any advice at this time (aka "dry spell).

Hey I want to know more about the portable fish finder!!!

I already mounted an electric anchor on the front of my scanoe,
but it hasn't helped in catching fish, although it doubles
as a depth indicator (I marked the anchor line ;-).....

    Yo Coonass -

I hadn't thought of that (or Dat) the anchor line goes down 60 feet,
I guess I could go on up to Lake Winni and drop the anchor (with
wire attached) down to 50-60 feet and get some of them monster salmon
    and trout.

One question - is there a certain amount of amps I should be cranking
    down there???? (hmmmmm 1 amp = 1 foot, 50 amps = 50 feet ;-)

It sounds like you might be suffering partly from fishing-on-the-
wrong-days syndrome, as in right after a cold front. Seems to happen
to me a little too often. (Of course maybe I'm just a lousy fisherman!)
Bright sunny days following the arrival of a cold from seem to give
the fish lockjaw. It certainly seemed to over Labor Day weekend - no
fish for two days, then they started biting again.

I just got through reading an article in In-Fisherman about using
gitzits. One of the main points is that gitzits work when nothing
else will, but only if fished properly - not used like just another
worm or grub. They recommend lighter (6lb) clear line, and light
jigs, 1/32 to 1/8 oz, subtle presentation and slow retrieve. Also,
they favor subtle (smoke, etc) colors over brighter ones. This approach
is supposed to give results when all else fails, but they stress
patience and experimentation, like being willing to try different
colors, jig weights, and even line weights, though the general rule
is the tougher the fishing, the more subtle the presentation ought
    to be.

Sometimes I think there's such a thing as a plain ol' bad spell,
that nothing can explain. I read an account by a guy who went an
entire summer w/o catching a decent fish, in spite of being an
experienced, well-equipped, persistent and knowlegeable fisherman/
outdoors writer. The moral of the story was that he finally realized
that fishing is supposed to be, first and foremost, fun and relaxing,
and not be allowed to ruin his and his family's vacations. He came
out of his bad spell eventually, vowing never again to let it get
to him again like it did then. I'm sure you're not as far gone as
he might have been, but I know I've sometimes had to cut short a
bad day of fishing before it put a black cloud over the whole rest
    of my day...

1238.15Fish Finder FunDEALIN::MCATEEMon Sep 11 1989 14:4215
I can't say enough about the portable fish finder. First, since I
haven't seen too many fish, I don't feel so bad not catching them (i.e.
be sure you get a 20 to 40 degree transponder). Second, it has been
great to "map" all of my favorite fishing spots with respect to
structure/drop-offs/underwater channels. Third, mapping lakes is
an interesting way to pass the time when you are not catching fish that
you don't see anyway. Fourth, watching the sonar LCD has seemed to
pacify my lately-condescending fishing pals, thus giving me some degree
of perceived added-value. Fifth, the thing has earned me a few beers
(i.e. 1 can = fee I charge for checking out someone's idea of a hot
spot). Sixth, sonar units are not something you usually find in a
canoe, so there's the "status" factor among canoists.

All in all, it's been a great buy.

1238.19Fish Finder FactsDEALIN::MCATEEFri Sep 15 1989 11:0914
Erik, the portable fish finder I bought was made by Eagle, which has
two portable models in the neighborhood of $200 to $250. The major
difference between the two is an audible fish alarm and some other
programming "whizits" (e.g. auto depth alarm). I don't remember the
model number but will send it (and other specs) to you directly.

It uses two lanatern batteries and doesn't weigh much more. Size-wise,
it occupies only a little more room than six-pack (i.e. the screen
flips up/dowm for display/storage) and the transducer mounts (via a
long cable) in about a second with a suction cup. Total set up time
is 15-20 seconds. Put-away is a little more because of having to stow
the transducer & cable in the battery compartment.

1238.20farm ponds and the likeWMOIS::M_MESSIERThu Sep 21 1989 13:1126

I would suggest that you stay off of large bodies of water. Stick
to your local farm ponds and the like. Remember that the more fishing
presure a body of water gets the harder it is to catch them. I have
found this year that when you are unable to catch the fish on the
outside edges of weed beds, try sitting your canoe on the inside
edge of these weed beds and cast your lures out towards the open
water and bring your baits towards the weed beds. Often bass will
be suspended some ways from these weed beds. As we often love to
use the old standby lures such as worms and topwater, spinnerbaits,
try using crankbaits at a slow retrieve. You will be amazed if you
retrieve them slow how weedless they can actually be. Make sure
that the crankbait has the bouancy to float back up to the surface
when you stop retrieving. In other words if you feel a weed, stop
retrieving for a moment and the crankbait should release itself
from the weed providing you didn't set your hook into the weed.
Often the bass will hit the lure when it begins to rise. Use this
approach when all else fails and give it time to work. Oh by the
way this usually works best during the slow part of the day. also
try and be close to deep water when at all possible. Have confidence
and patience in what you use and concentrate all of the time and
be ready to set the hook.

hope this helps you some, mark
