1233.0. "GET THEM SUCKERS!" by SALEM::JUNG () Tue Aug 29 1989 18:44

There is a small river in town in which i have seen huge SUCKERS!
I have tried a couple of different baits but have had no luck.
It seems to me that any fish that big would put up one h*ll of a
fight, on say 2-4 lb test. Any body out there have any pointers
that would help me hook into one of these big suckers (no pun
intended). I have tried your basic worm and salmon egg right on
the bottom, but the kibbies are all over it. I did get one of them
to charge at a Rapala, but just bumped it.

                              Thanks in advance

Try kernel corn as both chum and hook bait. Chum with the corn, and put 4
or 5 kernels on a hook and set it on the bottom. When the line start swimming
away, set the hook.

I do alot of fishing for carp in the Merrimack River from Lowell, MA to
Manchester, NH. Mostly in the spring during the spawn. It's slow but
fun catching anywhere between 5-15lb'er on light tackle. My friends and
I use the same method. A No.4 or 6 Eagle Claw and Green Giant whole
kernal corn (Only use the majors though, kernals make better chum).

The only sucker I've ever caught (with the exception of spearing them)
was when I foul hooked one in the Nesitisit(SP?) while trout fishing.
I don't fly fish, but I *was* using an ultralight set-up and the sucker
    felt like a whale.

If there are carp in with those suckers, I recommend you keep a close
eye on your rod. I've seen a few launched to a flying tumble, never to
be seen again (at least not by the owner).

By any chance this river wouldn't happen to be in Fitchburg would
it???? We use to go after them with spears. They use to run in small
schools. The river was only 2 to 3 feet deep. We'd walk up the river
and the schools would come right down threw us. Any way never thought
of useing a pole. Let me know how ya do...

When I see a question like, "what can I catch suckers on" I think about
what they are doing in there own environment. Most pond/lake suckers
are sitting in the mouth of inlets waiting for sh*t to flow in to eat.
The river suckers are probably doing a similiar task.

I've caught suckers on rancid fish guts (out of some nice trout!); Cut
up chunks (with guts) of river Daze. [That's a type of shiner] and
donuts. The cinimmon coated ones work best!

The 'bait' needs to be presented as the sucker normally sees food.
Therefore cast high enough up in front of them so that the bait your
presenting to them is rambling along the rocks in the same manner as
    their normal lunch!

P.S. your right about a nice fight!

    Bill.

I am not sure if this is illegal, but I used to snag them when I
was younger. Use a big swivel and put as many hooks every which
way you can and snag em. lots of fun on light tackle.

    hope this helps some, mark
