1211.0. "Martha's Vineyard location needed." by VICKI::LIBITZ () Thu Aug 03 1989 07:33

    Myself and four buddies will be heading out to Martha's Vineyard
    for four days of fishing soon and I don't see any reports for the
    area in the file. If any of you would care to share some of the
    spots you fish in that general vicinity it would be greatly
    appreciated.

    					Thanks,
    					Paul

    Paul, I just read the notes file for the first time in about a week
    so hope you have'nt gone already. What kind of fishing are you looking
    to do. Blues, Bass??? Let me know so I can fill you in on hot places
    to go. I spent alot of time fishing down there, since my Father lives
    there and is an avid fisherman.

    			->Thanks in advance<-

    Shawn, I would imagine that we will be fishing for blues but I would
    love to get one of those 40lb stripers on the line. If you know
    of any good spots for those let me know. We will be anchoring at
    night so I'll even throw a live eel over the side while we're sleeping.
    Any info on the area will be greatly appeciated as this is a first
    for all of us, we usually fish the North Shore. If you know of any
    good bottom fishing spots we'll try that too.

1211.3Some infoLEDS::BEAULIEUThu Aug 10 1989 14:4039
    Here's the scoop, If you plan on only fishing the northside of the
    Island, there is what is called the Middle grounds. Find the Rip
    off of west chop and troll along it, head towards the west. This rip
    runs along most of the northern side and you may pickup fish anywhere.
    The action is usually Feast or famine. If its slow you can also try
    this same rip for fluke. We usually drift with the current and bounce
    the bottom with spinner rig w/stip of squid ,but I'm sure seaworms or
    what ever would work. For the bluefish we use a yellow rebel on lead
    line 5 or 6 colors out. Also hoochie's are good or jig-it eel, both
    dressed with uncle josh pork Striper strips.(remove the hook in the
    strip they pull out and its usually on the fish that would have been
    your biggest ever) Use yellow with red and vice versa.
    You could work your way up island to menemsha if nothing is doin' this
    is where the striper action is! From about 8 pm till daybreak is the
    time to go there for stripers. Be forewarned though there are alot of
    shore fisherman up there at nite, and they dont take kindly to boats
    coming in close, Keep your distance! I was down there over 4th of july
    weekend, my father and I fished from 11pm til daybreak and had action
    most of the nite. At daybreak the water suddenly started to boil with
    bait and Stripers for a 100 yds up and down the beach. We had the place
    to ourselves. This went on for an hour! In the two nites we went there
    I landed 12 fish anywhere from 18" to 32" most were in the 28" range
    My father landed about 25 from 18" to 32lbs. That was the one keeper
    that we got !! We were Fly fishing, using white and yellow steamers
    but REBELS also work well. We try to stay away from bait so we dont
    gut hook the shorts. We fished lobsterville beach which is to the left
    of menemsha.
    Menemsha during the day may also have some bonito, false albacore or
    spanish Mackerel. It is still a little early for them, but some have
    been caught recently. I can give you more info on them if you want.

    If you are able to go to the south side of the island wasque point
    is the best place to go for blues, but I wouldnt go out there with
    less than a 20' boat, heavy seas out there and strong currents.
    Edgartown habor out to the lighthouse can be good and along east beach
    Let me know if you need more info on these areas, or maps and stuff.
