The list here is just the biggest fish in each category. There are qualifying
weights that must be met in order to enter in the club.
About four years ago I caught a 27" pickeral and a 15" white perch in
the same week but never thought of entering them in the club. I would have
been pretty close to 1st place in both categories for that year, the next big
fish I get I am definately going to enter. I don't think you win anything but
recognition in the magazine and a patch.

1183.1Muskies in Maine?EXIT26::DROSSELDON'T TOUCH THAT SWI.....Fri Jul 07 1989 10:4511

    Steve.....
Are my eyes deceiving me......a muskie (Not Ed) from Maine?
This Baker Lake.....is it the Baker Lake up in the northwest....
near the St.John R. and the headwaters of a branch of the
    Penobscot?

    Just Curious,

I didn't know there were any muskie in Maine either until I read it
on the listing. That one muskie was the only on that was entered in
the One That Didn't Get Away Club for this year. This weekend I will
check some older issues of the magazine that I have and see if any
other muskies were caught in previous years. The angler "Lance Geidel"
is from Fairfield, ME so I just assume it was caught somewhere around
there. Maybe I'll check into it a little more and do some muskie
    fishing this summer.
I thought that the most suprising fish on the list was the 11lb
4oz largemouth that was caught. The state record I believe is only
12lb 4oz. It wouldn't bother me that much if he wouldn't have
caught the lunker on a Mepps spinner, he was probably fishing for
    bluegills using a Zebco 202.

    ooohh.....around Fairfield...that makes me feel better...there's
a Baker Lake way up that's filled in the spring with nice brooktrout.
If a muskie ever got into there.....MUSKIE HEAVEN....brooktrout
and foot-long chubs.....we'd probably have a WORLD record with the
meals that they would dine on.

I did some research on Baker Lake and it is indeed the Baker Lake which
is way up north, above moosehead to the west.
Talking to Nate Mitchell (Maine Fishing TV Show Host) I was
informed that Baker Lake is loaded with big muskies. Although the
largest fish caught was 22 pounds marine biolgists have netted muskies
in the 28 pound range. The Maine Atlas shows three campgrounds on
Baker Lake which has little pressure from muskie fishermen. There are
no lenth limits to muskies in Maine so there all fair game. I am
thinking about taking a trip up there this summer to see if I can set
and ultralight record with a monster muskie. Can anyone give me any
hints on how to hook on to a muskie in the summer months: Lures,
    techniques, habitats, ect.?

    So many options

One of the recent issues of In Fisherman had a good article
on large bucktail spinners and somting called a slider, both
used for muskie fishing. If your not familar with it In Fisherman
has great articles with what equipment to use, how to tie line and
leader, techniques for working lures, when to go, diagrams etc.
I am leaving on vacation, but if you want I can find it and foward
a copy when I get back...

How long of a drive is it to Baker from Mass? Also, anybody know
if there's a counterpart Muskie Lake in New Hampshire?

1183.7Spofford Lake in N.H. for MuskiesCADSE::GUERTINFri Jul 14 1989 17:418
    Re. -1

According to the N.H. Fish and Game, the only place that has
Muskies in N.H. is Spofford Lake. You can only fish for them after
ice out and before ice in. In other words....No ice fishing is allowed
    on Spofford Lake.

Geez......there are monsters in Baker Lake.....the lower (outlet)
portion is (used to be) loaded with foot-long chubs...and the upper
inlets are usually loaded with brooktrout. The inlets are very
fertile streams...so if the brookies can still hang out in those..
the muskies will always have a super diet of trout once the brookies
venture out into the lake....the only test is in the GETTING THERE...
