1161.0. "LAKE MATTAWA, ANYONE?" by CPDW::ALUKONIS () Thu Jun 15 1989 10:21

    I was wondering if anyone has any recent experiences in Lake Mattawa,
    in Orange, MA. I found one note in the MASS SPOTS notes, but nothing
    recent. From Rte 2, it looks great. I would like to ask anyone
    responding to this note to also include directions to boat ramps.
    Thanks in advance to everyone!

1161.1You too...MRBASS::DSULLIVANThu Jun 15 1989 16:3910
  I fish Barton's Cove on the CT. river quite a bit. I live in Clinton
and always notice Mattawa on the way up/back. I always say-- Gee I wonder
what kind of lake that is...
   So, I just decided to call thier chamber of commerce to find out. Well,
they don't have one so... I went down to the town clerk. The very nice
lady told me that it is a lovely lake with a small boat ramp available to
the public. BUT THERE IS A 10 HORSE-POWER LIMIT !!!
   So much for that place...

    Hi Dave, this place mostly has trout in it. I have heard of channel
    cats being stocked in it some years ago but have never heard of
    anyone catching any. If you get off at the belchertown/amhearst
    exit going towards belchertown you will see signs a couple of miles
    up the road "LAKE MATTAWA" in orange, follow this road and it should
    take you eventually around the lake to the boat ramp. As far as
    bass go, i couldn't tell you whether it has them or not. Thier is
    excellent fishing throughout the area, just pick up some town maps
    in this area and pick a pond/lake and you should catch anywhere.

    good luck, mark

    I don't know about Mattawa but Lake Rohunta on rte 2 just before
    the rte 202 exit has some nice bass and they are shore-fishable.
    I like to stop there on my way back from points east. I remember
    one visit on my way home from WMO a couple years back, I talked
    my 2 travelling companions into skipping lunch for a stop along
    Rohunta. We grabbed a rod from the back and headed for the bridge
    over rte 2. I could see the bluegill redds in the shallows and
    the first hit on the grub I tossed was a big'n ... a bluegill of
    mammoth proportions. I lobbed the grub into deeper water next cast
    and set the hook when I felt resistance. I landed a 3 lb largemouth
    within minutes. I handed the rod to the next guy and told him to
    beat it. He never did but not from lack of trying. We didn't leave
    until past 3 pm and he made me stop at the KMart in Hadley so he
    could a rod for the next trip.
