1160.0. "The safety issues of bug repellent." by BRAT::YANG () Wed Jun 14 1989 16:23

I do a lot of fishing but I seldom use bug repellent. As a matter
of fact, I don't even know if it is saft to use it.

Is there someone out there who can tell us how harmful the bug
repellent is? How should we apply it? What is DEET ( as oppose
to DDT)? Is there any side effect using these products?

    Thanks for any comment.

DEET is the active chemical that is responsible for keeping the bugs
away. (Sometimes it is responsible for keeping people away also). It is
sold in concentrations from 10% to 100%. (100% being the most effective,
    of course).

How to apply it? I have seen it in sprays, lotions, and roll-ons.
I guess personal preferance takes precedence here.

How harmful is it? I don't know. When I used it in the past, I
sometimes went into a fit of sneezing, or it made me congested. I have
heard of others that got a rash from it. Also, repellents tend to melt
some types of plastic like the screen of a fishfinder, plastic watch
faces, etc... I would imagine that it couldn't be too healthy for you.

I don't know if you have heard of it, but I use the "Skin So Soft"
lotion from Avon. Not only does it keep ALL the bugs away, but it also
makes you the best smelling fisherman/fisherperson on the water!
I found a small, (2-4oz.), pump spray bottle and filled it with the
lotion. Some people may tell you to dilute it, but I found that it
will take away from the effectiveness of it. You can also just put
it on like suntan oil, right from the bottle, (this is the way it
    was intended).

The only side effect that I have encountered from the Skin So Soft
is NO BUG BITES!!! That's more than what I can say for the formal
bug repellents. You can also spray it around windows and doors to
keep the crawling type insects out, they won't cross over it. Try
it, you might just like it.

            Good luck and happy fishing

This note should probably continue in the bug repellent notesfile, but I
want to mention that Avon skin-so-soft does not work on mosquitoes. I use
it in the spring when the black flies are out. It works on them and also
on those really small bugs that you seem to inhale because they hang in clouds
around your head.

except black flies!!! I was with a bunch of AMC'ers this past weekend
who swear by the stuff (I think they get kickbacks from Avon).
They were the only ones who were getting bitten by the black flies.
I tried it a few times and also got eaten alive by the black flies,
but not mosquitos. As far as I'm concerned, it may work for some
people, but not me. Maybe it has something to do with body
    chemistry???

    		I'll stick with DEET..... john

    Better late than never...

I too am concerned about the long term affects of slathering my body
with 94% DEET (as found in Muskol etc.), however I find the perfume
scent of Skin-So-Soft to be nauseating at full strenghth. It also
blocks the pores like other oil based repellents (which is like a
skin tight sauna). I now use XIT which uses Citronella as it's main
active ingredient. It smells a bit like over-ripe oranges but is
VERY effective. It comes in either oil or wax based form. I like the
wax base as it doesn't completely block your pores which allows you to
perspire - consequently keeping you cooler.

    good luck,

1160.5Lotion or Bath Oil?KAHALA::PRESTOND.A.M. Mothers Against DyslexiaMon Mar 25 1991 12:3022

Are you using the lotion or the bath oil? I've been told that only
SSS bath oil is an effective bug repellant. I tried it last year, and
it worked, but I almost gagged from the stench! No wonder the bugs
kept away... Yuck! Pee-eew! Cough! Cough! Cough! Hack! Hack! (but no
    bites!)

I'm sure that the chief reason it's so effective is the strength of
the perfume, since bath oil would have a stronger scent than lotion.
But if the lotion works, I'd be willing to try it again (assuming that
the smell of the lotion is not as overpowering as the bath oil).
