    Sorry, I don't know what the heck I did to end up with that.

    I would like to take a friend of mines ten year old Surf Casting
    this weekend.

    I was looking for suggestion as to where to go in MA and NH.

    I also don't have any of the salt water lures that I need to any
    suggestions as to what I should pick up will be helpfull.

    I'm not looking to catch monsters I would just like the kid to catch
    some fish.

    Any suggestions or reference to other notes in the conference will
    be very helpful.

    Thanks,

    Mark

1155.2PLUM ISLANDS MY FAVORITEMERLAN::LEHANEThu Jun 08 1989 17:3611

       I would suggest you take him to plum island, try to go around
    1 hour before low tide and catch the incoming tide. as far as a
    spot i would go near the old coast gaurd station, and for bait try
    sea worms or try using live eels, the river is loaded with small
    stripped bass right now. any other info i think of i will give you.

       jimmy ps. plum island is in Newburyport
                                           mass.

1155.3MORE PLUM ISLAND INFOMERLAN::LEHANEFri Jun 09 1989 07:5310

       Some more info for you:

         I would stop in at surfland bait and tackle and ask kay or
    who evers there for info on where the fishing is hot. I went last
    week and she put me onto some good striper action.

1155.4try salem willows, but go early.VIDEO::MCNULTYFri Jun 09 1989 08:5314
    if you want the kid to catch some fish than I would take him to
    the pier at salem willows. I just read the herald fish finder report
    and they say the place is loaded, plus you can get away with using
    your fresh water gear. As far as tackle go's go to k-mart and get
    some mackeral jigs and christmas trees (a piece of leader with a
    bunch of little eels coming off it) there fairly cheap. There is
    also an amusement park and picnic area there to if you want to bring
    your SO. They ussually enjoy it there. Bring a five gallon bucket
    for all the fish you (he) catches. Hope this helps you out, let
    us know how you do. I think this place will keep his attention alot
    longer than going to plum island will.

1155.5Couple of more spotsAD::GIBSONFri Jun 09 1989 10:1216
    Another reel :) nice place is Odione state park in Rye NH, nice picnic
    grounds and good fishing without a long walk. You might get some
    mackeral if your lucky but flounder for sure. right in the little cove
    area. Fresh water tackle will work just fine. Flounder seem to like
    crappy jigs with bits of sea worm or garden nightcrawler on them. small
    hooks #4 to #6 are just fine with a couple of corn kernals and worm on
    them. a 1 oz sinker will zing it way out there on light tackle.

    Other good places are the Salisbury jetty, Newburyport public boat
    launch has a small peir you can walk out on and Plum Island Jetty is
    good also.

                               Have fun

1155.6Catch fish?????DECWET::HELSELLegitimate sporting purposeFri Jun 09 1989 13:1610
    Mark,

    What I want to know is, "What does catching fish have to do with
    fishing?"

    If the kid catches fish his first time out, he'll be ruined for life.

    ;-)

    I thought I read that most of the flounder in Salem bay is contaminated
    and not fit for consumption....think I read this within the last
    month

    Hi,

    I just wanted to let you know that I ended up going to Kittery, ME.
    We went fishing off of an old peir at Fort Mcleary (I think that was
    the name) We didn't catch anything but the kids had a ball in the old
    bunkers etc....

    It was a beautiful area and I wouldn't mind going again. Even if
    I didn't catch any flounders!

    Thanks for all your suggestions!

1155.9Since your willing to travel North...DNEAST::OKERHOLM_PAUFri Jun 16 1989 12:4118
    	As long as you are willing to go to Maine I'll give you a few more
    spots.

    	Popham Beach at the mouth of the Kennebec river is a good spot for
    mackerel, blues and bass. There is also a fort there for the kids
    entertainment. Our fish aren't as sophisticated as the Mass version
    so any bait/lures will work. A lot of folks use cut mackerel. If you
    can get them, sand eels, sand worms or blood worms work well too. There
    is a bait shop at Cooks Corner (between Brunswick & Bath) I can get
    more info on it if you need it.

        There are several spots in the Old Orchard Beach area. I'd advise
    calling Saco Bay Tackle Co 207-284-4453. Cal Robinson runs the store
    and is a wealth of information.

    	Come on up and spend money, its good for the economy. :^)

1155.10where the blues are....ZONULE::THOMPSONWed Jul 12 1989 12:1110

    i'm going down the cape this weekend in search of blues.
    has anybody had any luck catching 'em off shore? could you please
    fill me in on where my best luck would be? haven't caught a bluefish
    in a couple years, just one would make me happy.
    thanks in advance.

1155.11Where on the cape are you going?MLTVAX::LUCIAHe's dead, JimWed Jul 12 1989 14:2815
I've caught a few small ones (4-7lbs) in the Canal. Best time is the first
half-hour/hour of the incoming tide. You can get them off of just about
any beach, but ones with jettys or other breakwaters seem to hold more bait
fish and thus more blues. The key is to be where they are and that's not
really predictable. If you're going just to catch blues, consider going to
Plum Island instead. The mouth of the Merrimack at the tide turn almost always
produces fish. There are stipers in the river as well. On the beach side,
some 30-45' feet out is a hole where the fluke like to hang out so if no blues
show up you could always get the fluke for dinner.

Good luck.

Tim

P.S. Wednesday (next) I am off to P-town/R.P. to look for them.
