1153.0. "Say it, but do spray it" by DNEAST::HARRIS_STEVE () Wed Jun 07 1989 09:15

Last weekend I was fishing Lake Aintnobasstocook for bass using
a small rubber worm. I could see this small bass swimming around
but he wouldn't go for the worm. So in desperation I put some of
that MANN's lure scent on the worm and cast it back out. The worm
wasn't even in the water for a minute before the little guy SLAMMED
it hard. I have never been a big believer of this stuff so have
never used it before and I don't even know how this scent stuff
got into my tackle box but it seemed to have worked pretty good.
I always figured that those big bass pros on TV just used it for
advertising money. Anyways maybe someone can answer a few questions
    about fish scents for me.

    1. Does scent actually attract fish or does it just eliminate to
        oder from your hands?

    2. How many different brands and what kind have people had the
most luck with? The stuff I was using wasn't spray but had
the look and texture of very light peanut butter. It said MANN's
on it, maybe it was reel grease.

    3. How many casts can you usually get from one dose of the spray
scent? It seem like the TV stars have a 55 gallon drumfull and
        spray it on every cast.

    4. Does anyone know if this stuff has any negative effect on the
        water, environment, spawning beds, ect.?

    Thanks for any info,
    Steve Harris

Note 555.1 is a directory of replys to 555 which contain a list of notes
related to particular Keywords in this case topics about SCENTS is listed in
555.100 which gives the following list of applicable topics:

		299,
		511,
		779

There is plenty of info and BS in these topics about Mann's FS454 (the
peanutbutter type stuff you used) and Fish Formula and Berkley Strike etc.
to keep you just as confused, mystified and skeptical as you are today.;-)

Supposedly the FS454 is supposed to make the bait taste better, therefore
the fish doesn't spit it out as quickly giving you more time to set the hook.
It is not supposed to be an attractant (however your report would contradict
that theory). Some of the other scents leave a trail of "odor" in the water to
help the fish find the bait (I think). Most of us use it (if we use it) on the
theory that the stuff is cheap enough and it can't hurt.

From my experience, the most the "fish scents" do is to cover odors.
I have used all of them on the market and find no difference between
them in their ability to catch fish. I have also used peanut oil, olive
oil, fish oil, corn syrup and anything else you could imagine, even
WD-40!!! They all worked the same.
The only reason that I can think of for that bass making such a
dramatic change in it's behavior is there must have been something on
the worm that really turned him off. i.e; maybe you were smoking or
had sweat on your hands when handling the worm, or maybe there is some-
thing in your tackle box that got onto the worm. In any case, if you
use something to cover odors, you WILL catch more fish.
That goes for all types of baits, not just worms. (spinners, crank-
    baits, etc......)
I hope this has been of some help. If you have any questions, don't
be shy, send me some mail.

             Happy fishing

1153.3Gitzit + fs454 = BASSDNEAST::HARRIS_STEVEWed Jun 21 1989 14:2119
I bought a spray can of MANN's fs454 this weekend. My brother and
I went fishing using a couple of Gitzit's (first time using these
lures too). My brother caught three bass in three consecutive casts. I
caught a couple of smallies later. I went out the next day and caught
a 16" smallmouth on my ultrlight setup using the gitzit with the fs454.
This is now my favorite combo. I also sprayed all of my rubber worms
which are in platic bags with a good portion of spray and wrapped them
up tight so that they might retain the scent longer.
I also detached the arm and blade from a Beetle Spinner and
attached it to the Gitzit to make a "Gitzit Spinnerbait". Has anyone
ever tried this before? I landed a couple small bass with it but it
sinks too fast. I am going to try a smaller "Gitzit weight" and/or a
    larger spinner blade tonight.
All in all I think that the fs454 makes a very big difference when
a bass takes the lure; they just don't want to let it go. Sort of like
fedding the fish a chocalate candy.
