1147.0. "Trebble Hooks in ME...?" by HPSTEK::CYGAN () Thu May 25 1989 13:19

I've been told by an 'ole-timer' that there used to be a restriction
on using lures with trebble hooks in Maine, and I was wondering if
there is STILL the same restriction?

Seems like a great way to make everybody re-rig and maybe buy some
of those 'down-east' lures, if it's true!

    Looking for the truth........

    Thanks

Yep...a lot of places with brooktrout and/or landlocked salmon that
were not Fly Fishing Only used to impose that...and...I haven't
kept track over the last 5 years or so but up to the early 80's
it was still in effect (AND MAYBE STILL IS?). Now that some of
the truth about fish taking a single hook just as deep (OR DEEPER)
than trebles is surfacing....maybe they'll start re-hashing their
ideas.......As far as the hook swallowing....this is from what I've
read.....but I spend most if not all my time flyfishing......
What experiences has anyone had with one versus the other???

    Re.-1

Just the other night I was fishing my home streatch on the
Westfield river hoping for a hold-over trout (or two!?!). I was
spinncasting a medium size Mepps with the realistic plastic minnow
attached to it (4-got the name). This lure has a two point hook
molded into its belly and a trebble molded into the tail. A small
(4-5 inch) mouth bass hit from the tail and got a three point
hookup that filled its little mouth to the degree that some perminant
(and most likely fatal) damage was done in the process of releasing
the fish. I could have released this youngster much easied had he
been attached to a single point hook.

    Joe,

I think the lure is called a "Mino" and it may look realistic to
you and the fish, but it has always reminded me of a small shark-
I think it's the color and the pronounced dorsal fin.

I'm amazed at the small fish I catch sometimes - I think baby smallmouth
can disconnect their lower jaws like snakes to engorge some of these
    things. I have a love/hate relationship with trebles - I love the
fact that fish hook often themselves but hate having to unhook them.
I've found a few in-line spinners with singles in small sizes and
feel a lot better when I can unhook a 3" fish without ripping his
    lips off.
