Note 1144.0 Too Much Bait Was In! No replies
TRACTR::DOWNS 22 lines 22-MAY-1989 08:41
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I just thought I would post the results of a 2, 1/2 day trip on
the Big O. We were up there on the 18th through the 20th and fished
out of Sodus Bay and Mexico Point. We fished Sodus on the 18th and
the bait(alwives) were in heavy. We tried fishing close to shore
in 10-20 feet of water but were only successful at catching the
alwives. In the afternoon we moved out to about 150' deep and fished
both the surface and different depts with the down riggers. Out
of two boats we produced only a single 7 lb laker. On the 19th we
moved up the coast to Mexico Point. This area had less surface debri
and dead alwives but also produced few hits. We did manage to pick
up one 6 lb. Steelhead, on the surface side planer in about 70'
of water. On the 20th, we went back to Sodus and decided to go out
deep to get away from the bait fish. We took one 4 lb. Steelhead
in about 300' of water. There were alot of charters out in the deep
water and steelhead were being taken but not consistantly. The weather
was very hot (80-85) and the lake was calm. My boat left Saturday
at around 1:00pm and the other boat we were with stayed to finish
fishing that Saturady and planned to fish that next Sunday morning.
I'll find out if they got into any more fish later this week and
post the results. All in all, it was a nice trip but more action
would of spiced it up. Basically there is too much bait in the areas
now. Next year I'll be up in late April instead of mid-May.

1135.2 | wish I was still there | MTADMS::PAUL | | Tue May 23 1989 03:37 | 43 |
| I just got back from a 3 day trip with Capt. Bill Shone of Top Line
Charters. The first day the lake was like a mirror and bright,
we started fishing for browns, but they weren't coming in to shore
this year like they did last year. We ended the day going out to
about 100' and finished the day with 3 steelies about the 8 lbs
range.
The second day we decided to go out deep right away, after 2 quick
hits while setting up things got real slooooowww. After listening
to all the lack of commotion on the radio, Bill says "It doesn't look
like anythings gonna happen around here today. I found a thermol
break about a week ago, let's go see if it's still there".
This thermol break was located another 12 miles down the lake! About
a 45 minute ride by boat from Sodus. We got set up 170' of water,
the temp went from 46 degrees down to 42 in just a few yards. We
immidiately had a hit, a steelie 7 lbs.. I'm up for the next hit,
a 5 lbs. steelie. Half an hour later and both my buddies landing
8 lbs steelies, I'm up again.
We had spotted a stack of Kings on the fish finder down
around 40 ft. so we set up a down rigger, everyone was watching
that down rigger on their turn.(something about getting a king that
really gets the blood boiling) Well as it turns out a pole on the
side planer goes down, I grab the pole, pull back, Wow this is a
nice fish! I worked him up to the boat, nets ready, nope fish isn't
back out 50 yards, bring him back in again, back out again! oh no
the down rigger just went down (we know what that means) Ken's up
grabs the pole, biggg fish on the end, now we are working two big
fish at the same time!! Ken loses his fish after about 15 seconds.
(phew I thought I was gonna lose mine there for a minute! sorry
Ken) I finally got mine in, a nice 12.5 lbs. rainbow.
We finished up the second day with 9 fish.
The third day we went back out to the thermol break, we ended up
with 14 fish 1 under our limit. 1 12 lbs steelie, 1 12 lbs laker,
1 10 lbs rainbow, 3 10 lbs steelies and the rest were steelies around
7 to 9 lbs.
Another successful trip out to the Big "O"

1135.3 | Canadian Pike fishing on Big O | HAMSTR::JAFFE | The Big Blue Buster from CMG | Tue May 30 1989 10:51 | 67 |
| I'll enter my trip report, but I don't want any of you out there
to invade my personal fishing heaven.
West lake is part of the Sand Dunes Provincial Park, near the Quantico
inlet and feeding Lake O directly by way of a small break in the
30 ft high sand dunes that protect West from the big O. I have been
going there same week with friends from NJ and this year we had
a group of 12, 4 of us from NH. I dragged my 14 ft. Jon with 15
HP and troller the 8 hours there and arrived on a Thursday Mid-day.
The fish of the trip is the Northern Pike and secondarily, the Walleyed
Pike. The Bass (mostly small mouth) are there in abundance but are
not in season yet so we do try to avoid them, but this is just not
possible. We keep count for the pool of most Northerns landed and
biggest northern landed although all but a few eaters and mounters
are thrown back for next year.
The first afternoon, (Thursday) I was fishing with my boss, Russ,
and I had tied on a Mepps Gold #3 with just a bare trebble. I had
hit several good Pike in the 24" range just off the dunes in about
10' of water that had good weed cover 5' below the surface. Those
suckers hit your line like a freight train going past, freak when
they feel your hook set, then head for the bottom. I was convinced
that the pike were there this year again, so Russ and I headed over
to the rocky shoreline to see what else was happenin.
After fishing the shore for 1/2 hour without a hit, we heard the
splashing in the weeds, and upon investigaitng, found a school of
big (about 20 pounders) carp building nests and taking a roll in
the weeds. Not wanting to interrupt their fun, we backed out of
the shallows and continued down the shoreline, casting our Mepps
toward the rocky dropoff.
Not too long after, I felt the familiar tug against my line, and
reflexed with my hook set. All hell broke loose as what ever I had
on the other end went nuts. My ultra light Shimanu baitcaster holding
10 pound Tri and 5'6" med light graphite were straining to the max.
The heavy drag I had set on the reel was stripping out almost
freespool. I checked but there was no breeze and the boat wasn't
moving so it had to be a monster.
Ten minutes later I boated my monster smallie, a 7 1/2 pound beauty.
She smiled nicely for the camera, urinated all over my leg, then
said goodby as I released her, unharmed but wiser back to her home.
I can't wait to see the pictures.
Friday til Saturday late afternoon were picture perfect days, high
in the 70's and bright sunshine. The fish didn't care. They were
biting everything we through at them. A front came in Saturday
afternoon and with it, the second monster of my trip was caught,
a 9 1/2 pound Walleye. I caught this old fella on the bottom of
a sandy hole in about 20' of water. He went for a red lusox fished
deep and slow, bouncing it off the bottom. This guy was not as luck
as the Bass, since it IS walleye season. He mad 12 of us a very
tasty dinner but not before posing with me just for the memories.
The trip was a huge success for everyone along. I personally caught
39 Pike, 7 Walleyes, and too many bass in the 1-2 pound class and
other varieties to count. My count was just sightly above average
for the 12 of us. All in all, it took several days to get the charlie
horse out of my sholder from hook settin and it will take at least
until next year to get the memories out of my head. All of us from
NH agreed, that this one week a year on (or very near) the big O
tends to spoil NH fishing for the rest of the season.
Anyone that wants to see the pictures can stop by my office in MKO2
in a few weeks. I plan to have them enlarged and framed.

| HI,
I thought I enter something into this notesfile about a fishing
trip I just came back from. I went over the weekend to Lake Onterio
and I caught a 40-inch 22-pound king salmon, my friend caught a
39-inch 37-pound and a 40 inch 30 pound king salmon. This trip was
awsome and worth the money.
My question is this to you guys who are married out there and
mounted a fish that cost lots of money. My wife went nutso when she
saw the bill from the taxadermis. How did you guys avoid the
argument when you showed the bill to your wife?
Enough of that, if anyone is interested about more details
of this trip, just reply back and I would be glad to inform
anyone of where I went.
sincerly,

| HI,
ok here the story.
On the first day we fished between 100 to 175 feet and the temp was
51 to 56 degrees and about 4 miles from shore over near the nuke
plant. My friend fished on another boat about 12-miles out at
450 feet at 51 deg. I caught my king by jigging with wire sting
instead of using the downrigger. The king hit that sucker and
boom I felt like I had a sword fish on the line. It took about
20 min. to land that baby. My friend used all downriggers with the
dodgers attached. I guess we hit it lucky but I tell ya, the
people we had for a charter we one hell of a guide. We had 10 lines
out per boat.

Yes it is the same woman and yes we were in Colorado 2-months
ago but I can't give her your phone number because long distance
phone calls are very expensive unless after 5:00 p.m.
To be truthful though she really didn't complain that long
but to fix the situation she going out this weekend and buying clothes
that costs $296 dollars the extact dollar amount the fish cost to have
mounted.

1135.10 | what a trip as allways | MTADMS::GEIBEL | | Fri Aug 18 1989 15:17 | 30 |
| Well we just got back from lake O monday morn. we had a fun trip
only boated one brown ?(released him) sat evening.
Sunday we wnt out about 11-12 miles (a 16' starcraft) lake was
rough in the early am 9-10am calmed right down first king hit off
a dipsy diver with a chart, green N.K.28 had him on for about 2 min.
he decided to make a turn and cut the line with his teeth gone he
was definatly around 30 lbs.
Set up again an hour later holly sh*t what was that a king jumped
about 4 foot out of the water right behind the boat slamed the rod
out of the downrigger the all hell broke loose he wrapped around
both downriggers and the other 4 rods we finally got that out and
then as most king do he started running in about 1 1/2 nim he was
out about 300 yds he made a heck of a turn and dove down and then
was gone only got a piece of his mouth, another chart, green N.K.28
20 min later we were pulling up and the on dipsy wouldnt release
so while Roger was pulling it in I tried to release the other one
and it wouldnt release so I putit back in the rod holder and sat
back down and continued driving the boat turned to look at the rods
and the dipsy rod was bouncing wait a minute I just had that rod
in my hand and there wasnt a fish on it.
but sure enough it was a big laker and my wife did everything great
except she put the rod tip down at the end and he was gone she was
really bummed out she wanted to get it mounted it took a black/purple
over hammered nickle N.K.28.
Hope to go back soon.

and have boated 31 lakers,9 kings 4 browns,3 skamanias,1 rainbow.
They've all come from deep water and trolling fairly fast. Last

They are more streamline and have a blunt snout. They have the light

fin clipped. They fight every bit as good as any other steelhead.

Well after working almost non stop during my free time last week
getting the boat and all the equipment ready for the first launch, I
got to sleep around midnight friday night with visions of big fish
jumping from the water and being attached to my fishing pole.
But at 3:00 am I was awaken when the house started to shake, the
wind was blowing about 60 mph and then it started raining and it rained
and blew all weekend I was bummin. The reports I got was that cleo's in
the neon blue & silver have been really good along with numerous
rapallas in varios colors.
I was really hopeing to get out saturday but the wait will only
add to the excitement of the first trip out past the light house as
I head out on the big water.
I was reading my eslo newspaper this weekend and a word of strong
warning to anyone that is bringing your boat out here......
The U.S. Coast Guard is going to be patroling very heavy the bigest
thing they are going to be checking is FCC license's. If your boat has
a VHF radio you better have a FCC licence posted on that boat it will
be a $1,000.00 fine- possible jail sentence- and possibly confiscate
the radio. they are really going to be cracking down on people here, so
as a word of warning - make sure your boat is properly equiped
and that all the lifejackets for each person on board is easily
accessable(not in storage under the floor or in the cabin) I was told
that the coast guard will be boarding boats out on the lake, they said
they will pull right up to you and stop you and come aboard.
They are also going to be checking for alcohol and drugs, they can
and probably will write you up for DWI if your drinking and I think
they can pull your drivers license for vehicle if your caught.
This would really spoil someones trip if they got stopped and not to
mention the money aspect of it. The only thing I can say is just abide
by the rules and everyone should be ok, now I am not say everyone is
a rule breaker but I just wanted everyone to be aware of what they may
run into while they are out here.
Good luck fishing
Lee who cant wait till friday!!!!

Well you guys asked for it, here it is.
Easter sunday I woke up at 8:30 to a nice sunny bedroom I took the
dogs out and the wind wasnt blowing at all and the sun was warming the
air. I put the dogs in and started hauling out the fishing equipment,
Then came the task of getting the wife to go out also, finally we
were on the road at 10:15 got to the launch at 10:30 talked to the guy
at haers tackle and then had splashdown at 10:45 am.
As we were heading out of the harbor we got to the light house as I
throttled up to cruising speed we was on the big O for the first time
this year, I headed N NW for about 1/2 mile out to about 65 foot of
water and found some seagulls working the surface so decided to set up
there to see what we could get going.
I ran the port side planner out hooked up a blue & orange rapala
ran that on the outside, the inside one I ran out a chartruse & orange
cleo 2/5 oz, I set out a black & purple NK 28 on the starboard
downrigger, and then a chartruse firedot needle fish on the port
downrigger at 6ft.
After setting the port rigger I turned around only to meet a rod tip
in my face what he @#$% and then the line just started screaming from
the reel, I had the rod out of the holder and was into what felt like a
nice fish, I started running the drag up since line was quickly
disappearing fron the reel, I finally got it stopped and then he
decided he was going to air himself out, then he ran the boat and I got
him to the side of the boat.
The first attempted netting was unsuccessfull, the second attempt
was unsuccessfull ( I was really wishing we brought the big salmon net)
then the damn fish found the downrigger cable but some fancy manuvers
I got it undone, I told the wife this is it we either get him or we
loose him so as she leaned out with the net I stepped back and I saw
her scoop with the net and then the first fish of the year hit the deck
of the boat a beautifull 16 pound Chinook salmon.
After that the wind started picking up, and we lost one off a
downrigger, then about 1:00 the wife started getting cold so we picked
up and headed home.
Tackle: 7 ft light action rod
Penn 9 M level wind
10 lb test line - dou lock snap
Chartruse & orange cleo 2/5 oz
Misc: 1 of the 3 hooks on the cleo was almost straightened right out.
Well thats it for now.

Well it is pretty easy to get the fishing fever when you are at
work, its 60 degrees out, calm,& sunny. I wish the doctors would
recognize it as a serious illness.
I launched out of puttneyville last night, went out N-NW out of
the mouth of the stream, got into some warm water so I set out both
downrigger, then put out the side planner and ran out 2 rods off the
planner.
I sat down to take over the helm, but I wasnt setting for long,
my wife yells fish on and she was on it in a second, 5 minutes later
a nice 7 lb brown came to net.
Its a shame we only had a few hours to fish and when the sun
started going down it got darn cold. it will be great when they turn
the clocks ahead this weekend I will have time in the evenings to fish.
They are calling for temps in the 70's this weekend I LOVE IT
maybe it will warm up the shoreline and bring the smelt in which = fish
in close.
REDEYE- I work 7-3:30 sat & sun but I will probably be
going out of sodus and I will run out east probably out past blind
sodus bluffs I think once I get past there I will be able to reach you
on VHF and maybe we can meet up out on the lake.
Good luck!! & get some chart&orange cleos!

Just got back from Little sodus,It wasn't one of our best weekends in
the spring but we didn't get skunked!
We ended up with 24 browns, 1 laker, 1 Coho. The biggest brown was only
around 8-9 lbs.
Screwy Louis Charters did boat a 23lb brown right where we were
fishing!
We got blown off on Sat. by 1:30, Sun. it shut down around 2:00 So we
picked up,and mon. we quit at 11:30 and came home.
The water temp. was real warm for this time of year,we hit 48 deg. at
one point.Didn't seem to find any bait fish yet though?? No sea gulls
working the water either? I think next weekend is going to be the
weekend for the bait fish to be in????
P.S. LEE, we didn't get anything on spoons, everything we caught was on
Rebel Fast Tracks - Green "G" series was the most predominant,
Black stripes on the back with silver
bottoms worked good, also black dots with
silver sides worked good
I head back on thursday till Sunday hope the weather is as
good!!!

Well this really isnt a Lake O report but should make for enjoyable
reading.
Yesterday I went down to a small trout stream about a mile from
the facility here, and with the rain the last few days the creek was
a little high and muddy, so I figured that the fish would need
something strong smelling so I put on a nice ball of POWER BAIT and
I tossed the bait over to the opposite bank and then let it float down
towards a brush pile.
It made it about 10 feet and then the line went taunt and I pulled
up on the rod and all of a sudden this fish just took off down stream
and I was on run and one trip down stream and one trip upstream and 10
jumps later the fish finnaly came to net.
species: STEELHEAD
length : 24"
weight : 4lb 6.9 oz
equipment: shimano 4 ft superultralight bullwip
ryobi u.l. open face spinning
4 lb test trilene xl clear mono
# 10 eagle claw hook
and POWER BAIT
I was so shocked to see a steelie hit power bait, since they are so
spooky and finicky. this fish was a female and had already spawned
and was probably on her way back out to the lake.
I will be going there more often now........ everyday!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well this is gonna be a combined trip report, we have been doing
really good out on the lake so far, we have been doing good on kings
this year. the biggest king was a 24 pounder taken 5-13. light tackle
55 over 126 - 70 off the ball on a chart & green stinger.
weve done good on almost all species of fish even some monsterous
small mouth bass 5-7 lb range. have caught 2 atlantic salmon so far.
the ESLO derby was ok 31 lb king won the grady white taken at sodus.
They have taken some huge fish- numerous browns over 20 lbs - last
weekend heard of 2 lakers over 22 lbs largest being 28 lbs!!!! and
numerous kings to 30 lbs.
Hopefully I will get to be out this weekend on the lake. I love
this place I drive 10 miles from home pick up the boat and in 5 minutes
im launched and on my way out through the bay to the lake. and its so
nice to get 6-7 lbs of fillet off 1 fish.... and the fight is great.
I know quit rubbing it in right.
Good luck to anyone coming out here fishing.

of baitfish and some big fish right on the bottom.
We decided to set up there and head west in 20-25 foot of water
we couldnt shake anything up and after we quit marking bait we turned
around and went east then rods started popping boated a 6 lb brown and
a 7 lb brown reset and then another release but we missed him.
again we ran out of baitfish so we turned and went west back
through the bait not a release so we turned back east and again and
then rods started popping again. by this time it was almost 8:30 pm and
we were about 8 miles from port so we decided to call it quits and I
went back reached for the first rod on the downrigger and it popped and
it was a 7lb brown. we then headed back in.
details: 23 foot of water
13 feet down
100 foot off the ball
chartruse/ orange small stinger

well I am putting in a combined trip report, The lake is really
starting to set up now with the thermocline down 75 feet. I have seen
more baitfish than ever out here this year. and when talking to a dec
officer he said there is a record amount of bait this year.
The abundant bait is reallyu showing in the fish they are drooping
bellies. the weights have been relitively good for the size.
Last friday we got into some really nice steelies, 7-9 lbs, there was
one that got up and did a tail walk for about 40 feet , and did
numerous summersaults in mid air.
sunday we were back into the steelies again. the only thing was they
were hitting the evil eyes so viciously they werent fighting to strong
or jumping, they were hooked very deep in their mouth with the hook
point out through the side of their head by their eye.
Last night we were back out again and set up in 165 ft. I set down
and was back up in 2 minutes with a fish on. then reset 15 minutes
later another rod pops and another fish. this went on for the 3 hrs we
were out there. we ended up with 22 releases...18 fish on...17 fish
boated 13 fish released to fight another day.
8 of the 13 lakers were in the slot limit, one really hurt to go
back I had to weight him before I released it 15.5 lbs he was just to
the 30" mark, but he went back, it looked like someone shoved a
watermellon into its stomach.
everything has been coming on chart/green chart/orange
black/purple pink/purple
last night we were down 60-88 feet over 160-220 feet. we marked
tons of fish. we were trolling along and I am watching the fish finder
and this is what i saw

Where you see the X is about what we saw when the rod popped, that was

Well I will probably be going out this weekend. its hard to stay away
when the fish are really biting..

| Thermocline at 75 feet?!?!?
Where did you get this information?!?!?
Thermocline reaches 45 feet max, even in the ocean.
In a lake, in the doldrums of August, you hit the thermocline at 20-30
feet. Seventy-five feet?!?!
Either your info is bad, or there is something dramatically wrong with
the part of the lake where you took your temp measurement.
This time of year, where you are, the thermocline ought to be right
around 12-20 feet.

Well I am ussually a pretty easy going person but the reply in .29 got
me PISSED, John I have been reading your replies and entries Long
entries/stories, they are at all times of the day, you must be an awfull
fast typer or have megga spare time on your hands.
First off have you ever been on the Lake ontario? have you ever used
a FISH HAWK TEMP PROBE? do you know what the water temp is in a
thermocline? DO you know how to read a fish finder/ and know what you
are reading?
I had 72 degrees on the surface 65 at (your themocline) 20 feet 60
at 35 feet and 55 at 55 feet, then 50 at 65, then the temp dropped very
quickly we had 45-48 down 75 feet...
But I guess you know more about this lake than us fishermen that
are on it almost everyday.... even the thousands of charter captains
that make a living from the lake.
Ill tell you what well go out this weekend and I will set the 2
inside riggers at 12-20 feet(your thermocline) and the 2 outside where
I got 45-50 degree water and I will post the results here monday. I
will even run the same lures and colors and same distances from the
ball.
RE: this time of the year, where you are, the thermocline ought to be
right around 12-20 feet.
Well where did you get this info ? a book? personal experience? or
did you actually take a temp reading?

Yes, personal experience is what my previous contest was based on.
Not wanting to get into an argument on semantics again, though, I will
just say that your use of the word "thermocline" was what jarred me.
In a deep lake (eschewing technical terms here), there are two major
temperature changes. The first is called the "thermocline." The second,
which is the upper boundary of the hypolimnion (is that a technical
term?) is also, as of this moment, recognised by me as the second
thermocline.
Thanks for noting your depth/temperature changes. Didn't mean to ignite
your flame.

1135.34 | another weekend on the big O | USRCV1::GEIBELL | KING FISHING ON LAKE ONTARIO | Mon Jun 24 1991 09:24 | 55 |
|
Well we went out friday evening, headed out to 220 still had 40-45
down 75-80 foot. set all downriggers and commenced to find fish.
We started marking baitfish and fish and then a rod bounced I was on
it in a flash, Decent laker I said to my wife, then another rod popped
and at the same time the fish I had started peeling line from the reel
at a fenominal rate, now we got one possible king and another fish on
too, my wife grabbed the other pole but the fish wasnt hooked up that
good and she lost it so I gave the pole I had to her.
The battle insued for about 10 minutes shed get line in he would
run it back out, then she said there's the rubber band so I grabbed the
net, got up on the splashwell of the boat and this fish jumped right
out of the water behind the boat......A LAKE TROUT........
I couldnt believe it, a lake from 80 foot down fought like that,
it was 26.5 inches but weighted 12.75 lbs its belly was huge, and
later apon examination of its stomach, there were 13-15 sawbellies in
its belly.
we didnt catch any fish above 50 foot, everything came between 58-60
ft. all on chart/green or chart/orange either NK 28 or evil eyes.
We also had a really bad wind storm on saturday, 4-8 footers, we went
out sunday but it was rough and on of the people on the boat got really
sick.... we were out about 1 hr. the fish were really scattered and
bait was nowhere to be found.
Temps were really messed up also;
45 degrees down 85 feet over 200 foot of water
40 degrees " " 65 " " " " 100 " " " " "
40 degrees " " 30 " " " " 50 " " " " "
surface temp was between 55 ( right outside the channel) to 67 out at
200 foot mark.
The only benifit of the wind is going to be that the browns are going
to be back in shallow this week, if we dont get anymore bad winds
tuesday things should be good, and by wednessday the lake should be set
up again.
Well if anyone wants more info or general BS contact me
offline.
Note: all fish on friday came on the cheaters.

Well I finnally got a chance to enter this note, We launched at 6 pm
last night, got out on the lake at 6:15, it was flat as glass, headed
straight out from the lighthouse to 160 and saw a baitschool crusing
the surface so we set up there.
didnt really mark much fish till we hit 194 then 1-2-3-6- wooow look
at all the fish on the fishfinder, then it happened the front rigger
rod bounced and I grabbed the pole and set the hook, gave the pole to
Mark and he was into the fight with a good fish, then it found the
starboard dipsy rod, got that outta the way, then it found the
downrigger cable, got him away from that and then I was able to get
him netted, a nice 9lb laker.
We got him in the cooler and I was resetting the downrigger again
and my wife yells fish on , I told Mark to get him, he grabs the pole
and gave one of the hardest hooksets I ever saw, I thought he would
break the pole or fall overboard but he did get the fish to the boat, a
4 pound laker.
then I got all the poles set and turned the boat around to go back
over the same area, and we are all talking and got talking about kings
and I dug out my log book and looked up the last king we got, and I
said well we are due for one its been awhile, and I no sooner than I
said that, and
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGG
the starboard dipsy rod went and the line just kept on screaming,
grabbed the pole and then handed the rod to Mark, and then I got the
other dipsy rod up and out of the way and then pulled 2 downrigger
rods, and the whole time Marks sayin look at him danceing on the water
that fish just got right up and stood on its tail, it went back and
forth get line in take line out, Marks saying my arms getting tired,
I said keep on reeling, and I climbed up on the splashwell and the
first time the fish swam across behind the boat I stuck the net in
front of it and in a scoop it was safely in the net, I dumped him on
the floor of the boat and Marks kinda standing there in awe, and I am
yelling at him to club it, because it was thrashing the stuff in the
boat. it was a 20 lb king.
So we got stuff squared away and all the poles set again and then
the bolt that my kicker conecting rod it bolted to the motor broke so
here we are 220 foot of water nad I am seting on the downrigger board
working on puting a new bolt on the motor (still moving/fishing) and
the back downrigger rod is right beside my head and all of a sudden I
get hit in the side of the head with the pole, and I said somebody
mind getting this fish, and they said what fish, I pointed to the pole
and said there is a fish on this pole right here.
So I am finishing my work on the motor and marks fighting a fish
right behind me, we finally got the fish to the boat and put the 3rd
laker in the box.
all 2 lakers came on chart/green evileyes or NK28's
1 laker came on a chart/orange NK28
the king came on a black/strawberry/purple NK28 -- with a
dipsy diver
lakers were 80-75-70 for depth's 30 foot off the ball in 194-230 ft
king was 65 down in 196 foot of water.
trolling speed was 1.6 - 1.8
surface temp was 71.2-72.4 out to 250 foot.
down temps- 60@ 40ft, 55@ 60ft, 43@ 80ft
Hopefully we dont get any bad winds now till after the 4th of july,

This is a report for the 4th weekend.
Thursday- at the lake 4:45 am out to 200 foot set up at 5:10 got 2
lakers by 7:30, roger calls me and says he is heading in since his boat
motor is running like crap still, so we picked up and went in too I
worked on his motor for about an hour then tried it out, it worked ok
so back out on the lake at 10.
11:30 I am watching the poles and all of a sudden a coho salmon
comes out of the water right behind the boat with my evil eye hanging
in its mouth. then the rod popped and I was on it in a flash, we
finally got it to the boat after some really nice jumps and runs.
then we hit another dry spell for about 45 min. and then we hit
another laker, then 1 laker in the slot limit, then I set a pole back
out after releasing the slot laker, and set down and 2 minutes later I
was back up on the pole again, I said boy we got a decent fish here,
then I saw a 8 lb laker come up behind the boat, I couldnt believe it,
then as I was looking at it in disbelief there was a SECOND laker on
the other lure, so I handed the rod to my wife and grabbed the net and
we got them into a position to net them and we got them both.
we got a couple more lakers in the slot, then my wife hooked into
a nice fish, and after about a 5 minutes I netted a 10 lb laker that
was just under the slot, so we were limited out and called it a day.
Friday, Roger, myself, and Rogers boy Donny went out since Rogers
wife didnt feel good, we went back out to 200, set up and didnt do
anything for the first hour, Roger went to the back of the boat and was
taking a leak, then turns around to come back to sit down and I said
are you gonna get that fish, he said what fish, I said the one that is
on the port side dipsy rod, he wouldnt believe me till we got the fish
to the boat, and netted a small laker, then we missed a fish off the
downrigger, then got one laker off the downrigger, and I was setting
the pole back out and looked over at the port side rigger and the pole
bounced a couple times, then quit, so I finished setting the pole out
and looked over again and the same pole was bouncing, then it quit. so
I popped the rod out of the release and sure enough there was a fish on
it, then I set the pole back out and said what the hecks going on we
havent got a hit for 5 minutes, then I went over and started to let
line out on the starboard dipsey rod, I look over and the port rigger
rod is bouncing again, so I give the pole to roger and we net another
decent laker, then we somehow ended up in 350 foot of water, so we
worked our way back to 212 and then got one on and donnie lost it
behind the boat, then we had a nasty hit and like started peeling, and
we were into a strong fish, so I pulled the dipsey rods and the
starboard rigger, and 10 minutes later I netted a 10 lb LAKER we
couldnt beleive it, then we got another one on and donnie lost it right
beside the boat. then the Coast Guard came over the radio with a
weather warning, so we pcked up and headed in wit h5 in the box.
Saturday- on the lake at 4:45 out to 200 set up and then about 1/2 hr
later I told my wife that I was gonna run out some dipseys, I put out
the starboard then the port and then I figured I would take a leak
before I went back to the helm, and then the port dipsy rod arced back
and I told my wife to get the pole, we boated a nice 8 lb laker, set
it back out went a ways then turned and went back over the same area
and I decided to run ine of the riggers down a little more, and I
looked over at the port rigger and the one pole was released I grabbed
the pole and we netted a 12.75 lb laker in the slot, then we got
another laker then 3 in row in the slot, then another keeper.
then we had a dry spell of 2 1/2 hrs then we hit another slot laker,
then anther keeper, then another slot laker, then another keeper. and
by this time 2:30 it was about 90 degrees out and we headed in for the
day.
Sunday we got up at 4 to a vicious storm so we went back to bed then
got up around 8am to clearing skies, but roger said they were gonna
head home early so we were gonna take the baot up to the storage shed,
well we went down to the lake and Roger looked at me and the next thing
I knew we were going out through the channel to the lake....
went out to 200 set up and 45 minutes later a rod released out of the
starboard rigger and I said nice fish then the reel went zzz zzzz
then it just started screaming for about 45 seconds, I finally got
the fish stopped but then the line just went limp and it was gone, I
brought all the line back in and wasnt pleased with my findings, the
ball bearing swivel was straighted right out..... I couldnt beleive my
eyes. so then we headed back in to 2 wifes that werent pleased with our
fish story at all.
all fish came came on chart/green or chart/orange or pink/black
everything came between 25-50 down over 200
temps were all messed up- 57 on the surface over 20-60 feet then out
in 200 we had 67-71 on the surface and 40 degrees down 30 feet.
but everything was coming below 25 feet.

Well it wasnt he best weekend to be fishing but what he heck its better
than seting around the house.
Sat- I was up at 3:30 am let the dogs out, it was misting rain, my
wife said she wasnt going out. so I decided to go out by myself, was
launched at 4:40 am. the lake was calm and now it was drizzeling.
I headed out to 150 set up and started looking for fish, marked alot
of fish around 60-100 foot, then it started pouring rain, for about 3
hrs. then it was off and on rain.
from the talk on the radio nobody was doing much, but the ones
getting fish were getting them on black&purple NK 28's so I brought up
one downrigger and put on 2 black&purples 1 magnum and 1 nk28.
and a half hour later the rod popped, then the fun of trying to
net a 8 lb fish by yourself but I did it.
then it started really getting black in the sky to the west so I
picked up and headed back in.
Sunday- 2-4 ft rollers, we went out to 120 set up headed north west
hit 195 and a rod popped and we netted a 6 lb laker, put the pole back
out ad set down and 5 minutes later my wife was bringing in a 8 lb
laker. after that she decided to go in she was tired of being bounced
around

1135.40 | Starting to plan trip to Ontario | POOL::JMCLAUGHLIN | | Fri Jul 19 1991 13:51 | 25 |
|
I am planning a trip to Ontario for sometime in Aug or Sept. Last year I went
the week before labor day and fishing was great. The only problem was the lake
had turned over a couple days before I got there and made getting on the lake
difficult.
Fog was one of the biggest problems and days it wasn't foggy it was pretty rough.
But at least on the rought days, I was able to get out and even caught a 30 lb
King. That a great fight !!! So I am interested in the King and Steel Head
fishing.
I have a 17 ft deep V , closed bow, so 1 to 4 footers are know problem but once
they get bigger then that, I like to come in or not go out. I have most of
the other things Down Riggers, Ship to Shore, LCR and Compass but no Loranc.
So fog is one of my biggest enemies.
When would be the best time for me to go out, then the kings are hitting hard
and I stand the best chance on getting out ? Does early Aug tend to be better
then late Aug and Sept ?
Thanks

Jim ,
To answer your question on when is the best time to come out here
fishing? well you can never be sure about the weather, wind, feeding
cycle the fish are in, all you can do is watch the weather and pray its
gonna be nice.
dont know where you will be going out of but I would venture to
guess that in early august the kings should be starting to stack and
move toward their mother streams.
I live right on Sodus Bay now so I will be out even more than
before, this last weekend the haze was bad that from my place you
couldnt see the island across the bay + - 1 mile. I also dont have
a loran (plan on getting one soon) but I do have a compass, I was out
for 3 hours saturday and by following the compass and distance log on
the fishfinder I returned to port without any problems.
Just remember if your out on the lake and you need to get to shore
you have to go SOUTH, the problem is once you get close enough to see
shore you need to know which direction ( east or west ) but if pay
attention to where you go when you are out on the lake you should be
able to get back to port.
For your intrest, We have been doing pretty good out at 200 foot of
water, saturday we put 3 lakers on, we had 55 degrees down 75 feet,
50 degrees down 85 feet, 47 degrees down 90 feet, all 3 fish came at
90 feet and all took chartruse & green NK 28's.

Well Saturday was a work around the new place day, so I didnt get out
my mom stopped on her way back from NH and she said she wanted to go
fishing sunday.
Sunday we were on the water at 6 am, the lake was rough 2-4 ft
rollers, so I decided to go to 100 foot then set up and then head out
deeper, well I had just put one downrigger down and my wife said "holly
sh*t look at the fish" I turned around and I had kings stacked 30 foot
thick from 70-100 foot down.... we were then in 110 foot of water.
I got the poles set and explained the ins & outs of what to do when
we hook up and then it happened, the port rigger rod bowed way down
then line started screaming and 10 minutes later the fish was at the
side of the boat, when it saw the net & boat it went under the boat
and wrapped around the port rigger cable. I hit the up button on the
rigger and brought it up and then netted the fish, I was thankfull
that I run 50 lb cheaters since thats what it was on.
I then set the poles back out, and I said I want to turn and go back
over the same area again. I said we should be just about there and then
the port rigger rod bounced, I picked it up and I said well it must be
a laker its coming in pretty easy, I saw a dark form about 20 yrds
behind the boat, then the fish took off towards the front of the boat!!
he went between the rigger cable and the 2 lines on the rigger and the
reel was just screaming, I gave the pole to my mom and she said he wont
stop!!!! I said well dont do nothing you cant stop it its a bigggggg
king. I got all the other lines in and we were already chasing the fish
she was about 15 minutes into the battle and then I saw the gum band
come out of the water, I said well he is about 20 yrds away, she say's
well its about damn time he tired out, then ZZZZZZZZIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNGGGG
back out about 100 yrds, and then 10 minutes later the fish was at the
side of the boat, I kept telling her dont look at the fish, I said step
back and swooped with the net and then there was a 32 lb king salmon
laying at her feet. she was flipping out she couldnt beleive its size.
I tried to talk her into getting it mounted but she wouldnt she said
she wants one bigger!!!!! what a mom, she could barely hold it up for
the picture taking, and all the neighbors came over to see it and 2
cars stopped on the road when she was standing in the yard holding it
up.
The first king was 15 lbs and 32.75 inches
The second king was 32 lbs and 47.5 inches
We did get 2 lakers one 7 LB and the other 5 LB
All fish came 80 foot down over 115-140 foot of water. all on
chartruse and green NK 28 and green glo evil eyes.
