1112.0. "Moosehead in July" by GRAMPS::GSMITH () Fri Apr 21 1989 12:54

I have read the entries concerning the Moosehead Lake region but
I didn't see a lot of information refering to the time frame I
    am interested in.

I am looking for advice on fishing Moosehead Lake, the Moosehead
River from the outlet to 4 miles upstream, and the Kenebec River
in the late July time frame (22-29). What lures/flies should b
be used where? What types of fish can I expect to catch? Any
tips on how and where to present the lures/flies?

Any help you can provide will be appreciated.

Greg....I think you want/mean Moose River?

Dave (MTBLUE::FLYFISH)'s replies aren't that bad....
I do have a couple of books...I think they are also put out by
DeLorme (Maine Atlas & Gazeteer fame):
                                a) Maine Rivers & Streams
                                b) Maine Lakes & Ponds

Each book contains just so many places (far fewer than the state
has)..but one area well covered was the Moose River area......
             SOURCE ==========> into Moosehead L.

People I've met have had excellent luck throughout the whole flowage..
although that was during the prime time == JUNE ...with the
main hatches in full bloom (Blue Quills,Hendricksons,Sulphurs and
BLACK FLIES and midges). Wherever you head...it's the temperature
    that'll be your enemy.

    Enjoy it wherever/whenever

Speaking of Moosehead, I hear that there is still ice on the lake.
Is it true? Also I hear the road to Sebomok(SP) is in rough condition,
is the road passable. I am planning a fishing trip to the West Branch
in two weeks and would like to know the conditions...

     Thanks,

WOW, Beaver Cove, small world, thats the cove my Bro is building his
2nd home, if you see a foundation being built there that's it.
We(my brothers and I) stopped at Beaver Cove 3 times, but just to
     check on his lot.

We stayed at the Mount Kineo Lodge in the town of Rockwood, Fishing
was real good, we caught plenty of lake trout, the big day was Saturday,
24 and 80% of them were keepers, you could only keep one trout per day
per person so you can see we threw allot of them back. We had to fish
deep, if the water depth was 60ft we would fish 59ft. Fishing for salmon
was another story not good at all, I only caught two and both were throw
backs.

Yes,

We got up to Moosehead early in the afternoon and fished around Sugar Island.
We picked up 3 salmon about 18" each. They hit on a rapala 7s floater. The
next morning we picked up two more about 15".

Due to the 2 fish posesion limit, we had 3 for dinner figuring to fill our
partys 8 fish limit the next day.

On Saturday, we went to First Roach and caught 3 lakers and a salmon. We
filleted them up and froze them for the return trip home.

On said return trip, we went through a fish and game road block, that was
checking people coming out of the north. It seems you are not allowed to
fillet fish in Maine until you are ready to eat them. After spending an hour
having the fish confiscated as evidence, being arrested, posting a $45 cash
bond each, signing a piece of paper saying we plead guilty and said bond would
pay our fine, we went on with our enjoyable vacation.

Needless to say, it's my last vacation in Maine.

Hey Keith, I know what you mean. Next time I go to Maine, I'm
bringing an attorney, to help cypher through their fishing
rules booklet. Iv'e never seen anything like it, so many
different rules for each individual lake. Maybe it's just
a trap, to get a few more bucks from the flatlanders :*)

That's a pretty bad deal. I understand the intent behind the law, but
it still sucks. And you got your fish taken away to boot! ARGGHH!

    At least you caught some.

While I agree that the regulations for Maine are *extremely* tedious
to read and understand, it is still the responsibility of the fisherman
    to comply with the regulations.

I stumbled upon the bit about not filleting one's catch purely by
accident. Fortunately we caught no fish, so it wasn't an issue.

    :*)

I made a mental note upon reading this in the regulations booklet
that there would be a lot of "well-intentioned" fishermen getting
nailed by this one. Maybe I'm mistaken, but I believe it has been
in the books for some time now, so it shouldn't have been a surprise.

Try and remember that the overall intent is to eliminate poaching.

I understand the reasoning but don't nessecarily agree with
it. I guess the idea is to keep people from taking shorts but if
the fillets are within 4" of the keeper length, they should have
at least given you a warning or something as it should have been
obvious they weren't shorts when they were whole.

Ahhhh...the old short trout bust.....if those dummies would leave
the brooktrout to themselves and stock browns....there would be
no need to look for six-inchers...they'd all be ten-inchers in no
time. I spent a good time of my earrrrly years' summers up in Lily
Bay (grandfolks' camp)......who knows what size browns could come
out of Moosehead....certainly larger than brooktrout..................
     What a release!!!!!!!...this is a pet-peeve I've got with Augusta
and the Dept of Fisheries......for the most part..I think wildlife
and fisheries is where the rookies start..on their way to the "rich
yuppie lifestyle" in Maine government.....WHAT A JOKE.

    re -*

DonMac says I have to be nice, or he will delete my note and fine me 45
    days of co-moderator privileges. :-)

The rule about not cutting off the head and tail is in the book. It
however is not a note to, or near, the size limits but is in "other
rules". I wonder if this is by design? As for it being a law for a
long time, this was my first fishing trip to Maine.

I don't believe that no head/no tail laws affect the keeping of under
sized fish. If a person in a remote area wanted to keep them, he could
just eat them on the spot and bring home the legal size fish. (NOTE: the
road block was at a "choke point" coming out of Sebec, Moosehead and
    points north)

What realy make me mad, is that they wrote me up for under sized fish.
I enjoy fishing as much as anyone in this conference and would never
violate size limits and resent the wording on the arrest record.

ps. Anyone have information on lodging at Soudus Bay? Also gotchya
         laws for same? :-)
