1107.0. "Chum for Sharks" by PACKER::GIBSON () Tue Apr 18 1989 13:32

Yesterday as we were atempting the first fishing trip of this year,
the subject of Chum came up. Whats the best for what type of fishing
    etc,etc....

A while back I read that slauterhouses and butcher shops have a
disposal problem with the blood when they butcher animals. They
must comply with epa regulation regarding such things.

Well I was thinking that a couple of 5 gal buckets full of Blood
aka Shark Chum would be just the ticket.

Does anyone currently have a source for some free chum? and do you
    use it for sharks?

I've also heard of using chickens for great white bait? They seem
to like the feathers ? What about it?

                                         Walt

( Who hopes to be in the water soon!!) Not with sharks!

CHICKENS!!! - You gotta be kiddin. :^)

On the other hand, I wonder if pigeons would work. ;^)

Seriously - I was told that you should only use fish for shark or
tuna chum. Grind it for sharks or chunk it for tuna. I used to buy
mine from Saco Bay Tackle, frozen in 5 gal buckets. Last year however
the mackerel fishing was soooo good I caught all I needed. Bluefish
will also work for either tuna or shark ... I saw a picture once
of a tuna chasing a bluefish.
    Regards,
    Paul

Naw! I'm not kidding, Bruce mentioed it on monday when we tried
to go cod fishing in his new grady and I remeber reading somthing
about guys from new york ( Maybe that explains it) using live chickens
off montauck for great whites. They flap around and attract sharks!

I would think pidgeons would work, we should try using seagulls.

I'm sure a lot of the Bass fishermen have heard of fish eating baby
ducks and I also heard a story on monday about canucks tieing rats
to a float in the st. Lawrence for muskys.

A new concept in live bait fishing! Walt

P.S. The artical was in Salt Water Sportsman, forget which issue.

I fished in a Mako tournament last year where they gave out a
bucket of chicken chum to all the entrents. The stuff was frozen
so we used the can in the milk box method to chum with it. It put
out a nice slick and semmed to last longer than a can of bunker
chum. There were 75 boats fishing and only one Mako was caught so
I don't know if it was just a bad day or if skarks don't like chicken.
We did catch a bunch of nice size blues.

Makos, being rather finicky eaters, seem to be repelled by non-piscatorial
chum more often than not. People who really want to catch Makos use only fresh
fish for chum and bait. I have heard that live poultry is an attractant for
great whites, due to their frenzied flapping in the water. In general, the best
chum is the freshest. Next best is frozen, but since frozen is so much more
convenient, most people use frozen...
