1103.0. "Corn and trout" by CURIE::GOODENOW () Sun Apr 16 1989 22:38

    Should corn be used to catch trout? I've seen varying opionions,
    one being that being indigestable, it will kill any trout that
    swallows it.

    What's the scoop?

1103.1CORN SHOULD BE OKYUPPY::MEADOWSChaz 'Joe Bugner' MeadowsMon Apr 17 1989 14:1010
    As far as I know corn (sweetcorn in UK) providing it is boiled and
    soft will not harm trout at all. I have used canned corn myself
    without any problems and seen small lake fisheries in England use
    leftover corn from an evening meal to feed the smallfish which are
    being brought up ready for stocking.

    Hope this helps

1103.2"Grandfathers Tale"LEDS::BEAULIEUTue Apr 18 1989 13:4510
    It is good, for once, to hear a reply like that because I'm sick
    of hearing these stories of how corn kills fish. I have used corn
    for some time and believe that they obviously must pass the corn if
    they can not digest it. I have cleaned many fish and see no reason why
    corn would not pass though there intestional tract.
    I think it has been just an old "Grandfathers Tale" passed on though
    the years.

1103.3No problem...FREEBE::KERSCHTue Apr 18 1989 15:114
    I've had no problem using corn and have had no problem with this
    being the cause of death. Almost all the time thier death is because
    of being taken out of water.:>

    Corn is no problem.....in Tenn. the hatchiers feed the young'ens
    corn and that is why it is illegal to fish with corn in the rivers
    of Tenn.

    Ron,
        My understanding was that it is illegal to use corn as chum
    because the trout eat so much that they can't digest it. I've
    caught trout with bellies full of corn and none of it looked
    to digested.
        Do the use corn or corn meal in Tenn. hatcheries?

1103.6Cook the Corn.....FOOZLE::SCHOLZRon....and thanks for all the fishMon Apr 24 1989 15:4031
    Its crushed corn, as I remember it......hey now, that was almost
    9 years ago...:^) My mind isn't what it never was anyways....

    The rule (law) was no corn....kernals (cooked of course) could be
    used as bait...period. The reason given (when I asked) was they
    used corn as a feed for yearlyings and the fish would just up and
    take it....un-sporting they said and I agreed.

    But I don't fish for trout anymore (not that I ever really did)
    and I have never seen one with corn in its gut....but then I have
    NEVER opened up a trouts gut and haven't eaten a trout for over
    20 years. So, if corn does cause a problem I don't know about it
    and I can't see that it would cause any problem anyway....we (people)
    eat corn and not all of it gets digested, but it all comes out in
    the end one way or the other....:^)

    What the heck, salmon eggs work just as well and little marshmellows
    do to.......Now if something were going to mess up a fish's insides
    I would think that marshmellows would sure be the thing...;^)

    Back to corn....as I understand the issue, raw or partly cooked
    corn can swell in the stomach and cause a rupture. This would not
    be good for any living thing....so used cooked corn and it shouldn't
    swell...at least I don't think so.....any food experts out there????
    But how would a fish get that much corn in it if your only using
    a couple three pieces on a line.....who would dump a whole handfull
    of the stuff in,,,unless someone was trying to chum them up.....and
    that is not legal in fresh water (or have those rules changed too).

    Tight lines Ranger Ron (who only uses artificials anyway)

1103.8Problem with corn ???VICKI::DODIERTue Apr 25 1989 09:5715
    	In my very early teens I used to go trout fishing every opening
    day in Mass.. A bunch of us would camp in the same spot every year.
    It was not uncommon to see people throw a handful or two of corn
    out into the area they were fishing in. It may have been illegal,
    but I never heard anyone complain. I'm not saying it was right,
    but the thought process was probably similar to "if they chum in
    salt water, it's OK for fresh water". I have never seen a trout that
    died as a result of eatting corn. Unless they sink when they die
    this way, I'd have to say this is a myth.
    	Trout also took a salmon egg as readily (if not more so) as
    they would take corn so I wouldn't say that corn was any less sporting
    than using salmon eggs (a little cheaper maybe). I tried the little
    marshmellows but never had much luck with them.
