1091.0. "Help needed to repair a remote troller" by GERBIL::JAFFE (The Big Blue Buster from CMG) Wed Apr 12 1989 14:42

I brought home my new used Jon boat the other night and parked it
in the garage while on the trailer. Anxious to explore its many
wonders, I turned my attention to the remote bow trolling motor(
make and vintage and size unknown and not marked). I untied the
thing, and lowered it into place, connected the battery terminals
and moved over to the foot control, which is welded to the bottom
of the boat neat the front. The little switch on the peddle when
depressed did indeed turn the prop, but I noticed that the prop
was facing foward (the wrong way). I naturally decided to push and
pull on the foot peddle to move it into the correct position. Just
then, with not more than 10 pounds of pressure, I heard a pop. The
foot peddle moved freely then but alas, the attack angle of the
    prop did nada.

I guess I snapped the cable. I have not as yet opened it up so I
still have a chance. What do the experts out there assume I did?
Can I fix it myself? Where can I get parts? Should I bring it to
    someone? Who?

Thanks muchly - I know I;m stupid for foolin with it but I really
want to go fishin soon and did want some familiarity with the new
purchase before hitting the ponds and lakes.

    Thanks, Joel

It "sounds" like you did snap a cable. I had a similar problem
last year and replaced a cable on my MINN-KOTA model myself. Its
not hard to do but you do need to know the Make/Model to order a
new cable. You will also have to open it up to find out which cable
because there are two and they are different lenghts.
    Good Luck!

I opened up the electric last night/ after all thats what mom sent
me to engineering school for. All the harm I did was to pull the
end of the cable out from under the set screw on the gear. I took
a few minutes to worm the cable back into place and tighten the
set screw up with an allen wrench. The cause for the probem in the
first place turned out to be a snugged clamp that positions the
depth of the drive that was set too low on the shaft, thus interfering
with the rotation of the gear.

Anyone else need their troller fixed? Thanks for the help!

Does anyone have any experience with fixing bent shafts?

I did a number on MinnKota 565 this year... It's bent right where the
two shafts meet. I'm kinda leary about forcing it back into place,
fearing that I'll snap the sucker.

Anyone ever repair one or have one repaired?

Keith,

There's more talk on this somewhere else in this notesfile. However, I know
there are two factory trained reps in Massachusetts for fixing Minnkota
trolling motors. One is a guy in Tropic Land Marine (Dedham, MA) and the
other is at Fin and Feather Sports in Upton, MA. FWIW, I had mine repaired at
Fin and Feathers....pretty good job.
He has most parts there. If he doesn't have the part, he can order for you.

Bert's in Pepperal is also a factory authorized MinnKota service
center. I had them replace a bent shaft on a 565 last winter and they
did the job quickly and well.

I had heard that someone else did not have good luck there, but I
had no problem at all, and enjoyed 'shooting the breeze' with the
    owners on a couple occasions.
