1089.0. "Where is the open Salmon water?" by KELVIN::BUZYNSKI () Wed Apr 12 1989 09:51

My fishing buddy and I are determined to go salmon fishing somewhere
in New Hampshire or Maine this weekend. Does anyone know of any
salmon lakes in south eastern Maine that have ice out? I
understand that Sebego never completely froze over this winter which
leads me to believe that it might possibly be accessible.
Does anyone know? This is crucial to my spring health.

    Thanks

    John

I don't know where you live, or how far you wanna drive, but the
best landlocked salmon fishing in "'Murica" (or the U.S.of A, to
you non rednecks) is probably the East shore of Lake George (N.Y.).
    Good roads to get there...

Pemaquid Pond ,on Rt 1 North of Damariscotta Me is ice free right
now , it is a pretty good Brookie and brown trout pond . Several
of the larger lakes up here are on the verge of breaking up and
some should be freeby this weekend . As that happens I will try
    to post which lakes here.

I live in southern N.H., but have been known to travel inordinate
distances to catch nada. I already have a fortune invested in a
Maine combo license, so Maine or N.H. will be prime targets for
now. One of the few bennies of working in Mass is that Monday the
17th is a holiday to be spent dragging flies for salmon.

Maine has different rules for different lakes. It might be better
to say that salmon and touge season opens April 1 and that most
lakes seem to be the exception. Touge must be 18 inces except....
Salmon must be 14 inches except.... I have the book at home and
will gladly look up any body of water for exceptions.

The only problem is I'm in Valbone right now and won't be able to
    get the info until Tuesday.

Lake Winnie is not yet open, but there are spots. The afternoon of
'patriot's day', I saw three legal salmon caught near Weare's beach.
Plenty of jonboats and canoes in the water. All I caught was some nice
    rays and some casting practice.
