| I don't know where they were talking about, but it is far from being
out. I was up to Alton Bay on Saturday(Apr 1) and the ice has receded
back from the bridge over the Merrimeeting river less than 200 yards.
I believe the offical ice out prediction is a couple of weeks away.
I talked to several people fishing the open water at the mouth of
the river and in the river and nobody had caught or seen any caught
while they were there. Saw a fellow catch a sucker in the river.
I did'nt drive up to the main portion of the lake, so I don't
know the conditions there.

| I have a friend that lives on the river at the end of Alton
Bay, he's there every weekend and the earliest date for "Ice Out"
is April 20th, (so say the locals).

| As of 7AM Friday April 7, 1989, Winni (Alton Bay) is still iced
in! You can't even get in at the public ramp. There may be 2
acres open at the mouth of the river.
Don't waste your time this weekend. And don't buy the Lowell Sun.

| Any more news on Winnie ice-out or any of the surrounding lakes?
We're heading up this weekend for spring cleanup at my parent's
house in Gilford, and wondering whether to bother trailering the
boat up.
Thanks,
Rick

| << Still Frozen >>
Last I heard is that Winni is still frozen...sorry to be the bearer.
Most of Alton Bay still covered, from about the band stand northward.
The mouth of the Merrymeeting R. to the band stand is open.
Merridith Bay, Center Harbor and the rest are also still covered,
some places with several inches. Not too good for the BIG LAKE just
yet, we need some warm days!!! I also heard that even Paugus Bay
is covered in places.
Some places I might try at this time would be Merrymeeting R.,
Paugus Bay at the Weirs, or an old favorite the Opechee R. in Laconia
(between Paugus and Winnisquam).
Best bet would be to call the local P.D.'s (Laconia, Merridith,
Alton, etc.) and get the stats on the lakes or call some local tackle
shop (ie: Waldrons Bait in Merridith)
Hope this helps, lots of LUCK!

1079.8 | open enough | MOSAIC::MACINTYRE | Terminal Angler | Tue Apr 18 1989 10:50 | 12 |
| Yesterday, Alton Bay was open a bit more than mentioned in the
previous note. And it was possible to skirt the edges and make it
about 3/4's up the bay.
Keith Dilsworth and I went up and fished a few hours in the morning.
As soon as we got on the water I got a hit, and then nothing else
until about a half hour before we left, when I picked up a short.
Didn't hear of any keepers caught. Slow day, but nice weather.

| Anybody with a canoe and trolling motor is king of Paugus Bay right
now! The main body of water is still ice-covered, but the tip of
the bay where it meets the lake is open, as well as Weirs beach.
Plenty of open water for canoes and jon boats, bit hardly enough
for "real" boats. Yesterday was beautiful, and if I had not been
bummed with a lousy cold I would have been out all day. I still
managed to catch a keeper ll salmon from the dock. FYI: I got him
on a red and white spoon.

Note 1130.0 Winni salmon and water temp. 1 reply

Has anyone fished for salmon at Winni yet??
How did you do??
I've had some luck out of Alton Bay (where everyone goes) but i'd
be interested in hearing something about the fishing around
Center Harbor, that was the last part of the lake to become clear
of ice.
One more thing, any idea what the water temp might be??
