I would like to start a topic on people's viewpoints on Market
fishing, particularly in Lake Champlain. This is spurred by increased
activity of perch fishing on Champlain. I understand that many
small lakes are susceptable to over-pressure from this type of thing.
What do the rest of you think about it, should Market fishing
be banned on Champlain? Personally I think there will need to be
more restrictions placed on catches from the lake or the quality
of the fishing will be affected. It is receiving quite a lot of
pressure not only from the market fishing, but also from the
numerous derby's being conducted on the lake.. Anyone out there
notice any differences over the years??

Until they cure the lamprey problem on Champlain, market fishing
doesn't begin to make sense. The one thing that has made the Great
Lakes such viable fisheries is lamprey control (coupled with pollution
regulations and serious stocking.
I guess my point is that I don't think Champlain can withstand
the effect of market fishing AND lampreys in the numbers that exist
now.

I've noticed a considerable difference in the perch population up
in the islands. With the canadiens coming down every weekend and
fishing perch then throwing the undersize ones on the ice for seagulls
and then taking the keepers to Rousse's Point collecting their cash
and heading back over the border with their tax free earnings. I've
also seen locals doing the same. I think there should be some
regulations or our fish won't be there in the future. A biologist
said that only thirty percent of the perch population are going
to make it to spawn in Keeler's bay alone. If we don't do something
soon while there are still fish, then we may be to late as usual.
It'll probably turn out like the lamprey problem, which is ruining
our game fish like salmon, lakers, and walleyes. They'll study them to
death.

RE: The Doctah
There's a lengthy discussion of Champlain's lamprey control issue in
the BTO::VERMONT conference.
