1068.0. "Cod fishin derby" by PACKER::GIBSON () Thu Mar 30 1989 10:21

    I think that this is the time to start planning a SALT WATER COD
    derby. It will take a bit of forethought and some assistance to
    make it work.

    If anyone is interested in helping to plan and run a fun derby jump
    on in with your thoughts. This is what I had in mind.

    To be held sometime in MAY not to conflict with the Terminal Noters
    fresh water derby ( I want to fish that also).

    Pope's landing in Danvers MA would be an Ideal spot. Lots of parking
    at the boat launch and real good fishing right outside the harbor.
    Easy access to pope's- North on Rt 128 to exit at Rt.62 then take
    a right at the lights. Your there! Also a few of us keep our boats
    right in the general area of Danvers.

    There are picnic tables and a little park area at the landing to
    hold the awards after and celebrate.

    There would be a small entry fee to cover awards and refressments,
    Say $10 per angler. And we can have a lunker pool on the side.
    Kids catagory and adults for awards.

    I'm willing to take a few anglers out on my boat. Anyone else that
    can do the same?

    We can have someone pick up a couple of coolers of Ice and Bait
    at the Co-op and have it available to purchase at the landing for
    cost. We could use the help of someone with a pickup truck for this
    any takers?

                                       Walt

1068.2Getting Started in tuff!PACKER::GIBSONMon Apr 03 1989 11:1250
    Ok Here goes.

    I have cleared the Cod derby Idea with the Danversport Harbormaster
    and have his permission.

    We are looking at donating all proceeds from the derby to the Shriners
    Childrens Hospital, So the more entries the better. This is turning
    into a fundraiser. Anyone who wishes to donate all or part of their
    catch to help may be able to do so. I have a commerical Lic. so
    we can bring the fish to the Co-op after the derby. Donating your
    fish is not a requirement but a lot of people catch more than they
    will use and this way it wont go to waste.

    Here are some rules and info on the derby.

1068.3Who said codfish are dumb!PACKER::GIBSONWed Apr 05 1989 09:0413
    Due to the overwelming reponse to this Idea, I am going to detlete
    this note and the whole araingement if there is no positive feedback
    from anybody within a week.

    So far some of the responses I have recived indicate that Cod is
    not a fish worthy of our talents as anglers, also others say that
    they would rather fish bluefish? still others find the salt water
    to be to much for them to handle.

    I'll leave this up for Ideas and vote's ???????

    Hey Walt...
    Those who deride the almighty COD are probably those who's idea
    of fishing is following the hatchery truck looking for fresh trout.

    Walt, it might be a lack of people having a boat to get out on the
    ocean. I my self don't have a boat that could go out if the winds were
    more than 10 knots. Other than that I would love to get in the tourney.

    Oh? Maybe I should have mentioned for those of you not familier
    with the area to be fished. There are harbor islands that protect
    the Beverly/Salem area from the open ocean. Quite often you will
    find small boats ie: 12 ft and up fishing the inner island area.

    Iv'e fished this in 12 ft alum 16 ft bowrider and many others. It
    is very protected. Even small boats are available for rent at the
    salem willows in summertime 14 ft I believe?

    I can photocopy a chart of the area for anyone interested

                                           Walt

    I am interested too, with the following codas: I do not have a boat
    and I do not have any saltwater fishing gear. Other than that I
    would love to join you.

1068.9Now that you mention it...MERIDN::KPHILLIPSFri Apr 07 1989 13:1910
    In light of reply .7, I am interested. I didn't consider it at first,
    figuring that cod fishing from a 14ft aluminum boat wouldn't cut it.

    The question now is wether or not my father-in-law would be
    interested (it's his boat!).

    I'll check and get back.

        I'm definitely interested, I have the boat and the
    family love the idea, when I mentioned it to them.

1068.11Not every idea comes to be.PACKER::GIBSONMon Apr 10 1989 12:3810
    As mentioned in an eariler note, the intrest in this derby is not
    overwhelming. Therefore I am going to scrap the idea for a derby.

    Maybe next year? maybe not.

    All who have asked for charts of the area, I will send them to you
    anyway. and those of you who offered to help. Thanks.

1068.12Is it totally dead?FINSER::KPHILLIPSThu Apr 13 1989 17:369
    Even if there's not enough interest in a derby, would anyone be
    interested in getting together that day and fish that area?

    Possibly do some fishing, have a picnic, and share some stories?

    I'm not big on competition when it comes to fishing, but I sure
    would enjoy some company to share a day fishing.

1068.13Just one minor little problemVICKI::DODIERFri Apr 14 1989 08:505
    Just speaking for myself, I'm always eager to do some salt water
    fishing. It's just that having only a canoe right now tends to limit
    me to party boats/surf casting.

What was the day people were going to be down there? Capt Cod just got the
new Grady, and Walt's down there anyway, and I'll probably be in the area.
Maybe .-2 is a good idea. Bruce, Walt?

    Hi Joe.
    The date was June 3 Sat. I suppose we could all just get together for
    a day's fishing and fish fry after? or whatever.

    We tried to get Bruces new Grady yesterday, Not Yet?! But I'll let him
    tell the story.

    Ray. I have some room on my boat if you want to come along.
