1044.0. "2 Speed Shimano, Right or Wrong..." by BOSHOG::VARLEY () Tue Mar 21 1989 14:21

     O.K. guys, here's another chance for me to pick your collective
    brains, before they become too pickled from substance abuse. I statrted
    out lookin' for a good Crankin' outfit, but the more I look, it
    seems like I could kill three birds with one (outfit) stone. Tell
    me how this sounds:
     If I purchase a Shimano 2 speed baitcaster (4:1 and 6:1), I'll
    be able to fish deep crankbaits (4:1) , as well as speed crankbaits
    like Rat-l-Traps 'n Spots and Spinnerbaits (6:1). Granted, retrieve
    techniques vary, but I think these applications fit. I was considering
    using 10# Tri-Max line for starters, but there is one big question:
    would a 6'6" two handed rod rated 3/8 oz. to 1 oz., yet with the
    slightly softer "crankin' type" tip be a good all around solution?
    Remember, I'm not talkin' about fishin' 25' down. Also, a softer
    tip might be good for "Buzzbaits" to keep me from rippin' their
    lips off, or missin' fish. That would be another situation where
    6:1 retrieve would be required. If I were fishin' Spinnerbaits "on
    the drop", 4:1 would work fine.
     Bottom line is, I think the dual speed reel is what I want for
    what I've described, my chief concerns are on the rod type. Any
    specific thoughts or suggestions? I'm only 800 BASS PRO away from
    resolvin' this.

1044.1BTW, haven't received my (paid-for) '89 BP yet!SA1794::CUZZONESSatanic Nurses ... Tue Mar 21 1989 15:498

    Bandit,

    I think the soft-tip rod is just what the "Doctah" ordered for the
    lures you're talking about. BTW, I don't know the BP price but
    KMart has the BBM III (Beastmaster 2 speed) for $89.97 through 4/15.

1044.3Did you pop for it?CPDW::OTATue Jan 09 1990 16:1012
    YO Bandit

    Did you get the two speed beastmaster or what? If so can you give me a
    rundown of how it is? Is it worth the $100. I am getting ready to pop
    for a good baitcaster and was seriously looking at this one. Also what
    rod type did you end up with? I think on this one I was planning on
    going with the matched beastmaster Magnum Cast Med Heavy rod. If I am
    going baitcasting its to arm up for the buffolo sized cranks and
    spinners. I am also going for tiger muskie this year. As a backup to
    this note I am going to put a similar one in note 590.

1044.4The Answer is YesCLSTR1::VARLEYThe Skoal BanditWed Jan 10 1990 10:2020
     Yeah, I got the 2 speed Shimano, and I LOVE it. In fact, soon all
    my baitcasting reels will be 2 speeds; but don't do anything until
    you see the new Garcia 2 speed. I'm gonna check it out at the Centrum.
     I use the Shimano on an "All Star" 3/8-3/4 oz. pitchin' stick,
    and it's a great combo. I fell in love (if i use the "L" word one
    more time, I'm gonna sound like Phil &*^%$ Donahue - yukkk) with
    "All Star's" last year and now have 3, with one more probably in
    the future. For the dough, a Bionic Blade is tough to beat, but
    for Muskies, I'd look for a 2 handed rod at least 6' rated minimum
    1/2 to 1 oz. If BassPro has a "Power Hump" rod like that, it will
    have more guts than a "'Blade".
     As for a reel, I'd look at a Garcia 5500C - MINIMUM! It'll hold
    a lot of heavy line, and BPro has 'em on sale now; but if you're
    fishing for BIG muskies, a 6500C might be better. Both probably
    have heavier duty drags than the Shimano. On second thought, the
    6500C might be better suited to the St. Lawrence or the Chippewa
    Flowage, where fish get over 50 lbs. Hope this helps>

1044.5Birdnests?CPDW::OTAWed Jan 10 1990 13:496
    My brother has the Bantam Super Speedmaster which is the reel right
    below yours. His is in constant birdnest condition. He is using it
    off a med heavy Browning 7' rod. Is this birdnesting a common trait
    with Shimano's or is it simply his skill at creating interesting knots.

1044.6Help is on the Way...CLSTR1::VARLEYThe Skoal BanditWed Jan 10 1990 14:5019
     It's his skill. However, there are a lot of factors involved, many
    of which have been discussed elsewhere in these notes (DonMac, any
    idea which notes ?). If he's using a heavy rod, and lures under
    1/2 oz., or throwing into the wind a lot (which is generally a good
    but difficult way to fish), he's gonna initially have problems.
    But if he sets the spool control so that when the reel is in free
    spool a hanging lure falls from the rod tip to the water WITHOUT
    BACKLASHING WHEN IT HITS (!), and if he plays with the magnet setting
    (turns it up when casting into the wind, and as a rule of thumb
    sets it at about 30-40% of "max" adjustment, he should be o.k.
     I'd also recommend that he keep the reel handles UP (toward the
    sky, if he's right handed) as he casts. Sometimes too, if you keep
    the rod tip up when you feel a backlash while casting, you can let
    it run out; just takes a little practice...
     Whatever Wayne Hunter uses pike fishing in Colorado would probably
    suit you perfectly. He catches some "Hogs", and in real garbage!

1044.7Note 590CPDW::OTAWed Jan 10 1990 16:555
    The note is 590 which I mailed to my brother. I plan on talking alot
    to the Shimano, Abu and Dawai folks at the show about this stuff.
    Thanks for the info

1044.8DON'T TELL ON ME, THOUGH!!! :-)GENRAL::HUNTERfrom SUNNY Colorado, WayneThu Jan 11 1990 15:2218
    	OK, I'll fess up (IF no-one tells ABU). My set-up last year was an
    ABU LITE+ reel on a Southbend 6'6" Pitchin' stick with 12# Trilene XT
    and a minimum of 12 inches of 30# braided camo steel tippet. Since I
    snapped the Southbend cheapie on a bass this fall (Seems graphite
    doesn't like getting horsed full bore at 20 degree temperatures with a
    cheap blank), I upgraded the rod to a Conlon 900 series 6'6" heavy
    trigger stick from Bass Pro. Same reel. NOW, the one thing I do EVERY
    year is send the LITE+ back to ABU and get the drag rebuilt. (Might
    have something to do with why the free-floating levelwind feature on
    the first LITE+ didn't work real well at the end of 2 seasons of use,
    too.) Anyway, I have been thinking of upgrading the reel to a 521, but
    can't bring myself to spring for the bucks. So, it is a LITE+ on a
    Conlon 900 flippin' stick for next season for the Pike. (Besides,
    aren't you supposed to fight the fish with the ROD and not the
    reel????) Only feature I wish I had on the LITE+ would be an
    anti-reverse switch so that I could back-reel when I get those horses up
    beside the boat rather than having to try to play with the drag
    setting. Other than that, I can't complain about the set-up.
