1027.0. "Viral hemmorahpic septicemia" by SAVVY::LUCIA (He's dead, Jim) Mon Mar 13 1989 16:04
An interesting and disturbing article may be found in this morning's Boston
Globe, page 13, entitled "Unbalanced fisheries", by Globe columnist M.R.
Montgomery. I'll quickly summarize it. Send mail with your mail stop
and proper name and I'll send a photocopy back to you.
Viral hemmoraghic septicemia is a virus, carried by salmon, which does not
harm them but is fatal to trout. Officials in the state of Washington have
found two salmon hatcheries to be infected with VHS. It is not harmful to
human life. It apparently attacks the kidneys of trout and is a European
disease, probably acquired by some person's desire to have more exotic and
bigger species of salmonoids to catch. More than one hatchery manager has
watched millions of eggs and fry destroyed to stop an outbreak. Some water
is already infected and species introduced to said waters result in almost
immediate death, etc. etc. etc.
Sigh,
Tim
