1026.0. "Shimano reels" by CSG::CASINGHINO () Mon Mar 13 1989 13:27

         I was looking at various Shimano spinners the other day, and
    I was impressed with the CX 2500-SQ model. Is anyone familiar with
    this? Any opinions about it or other Shimano Spinners.

         I am in the market for one that can handle 8 to 12 lb class
    line.

        Thanks

1026.1A Wise Choice...BOSHOG::VARLEYMon Mar 13 1989 13:5710
     I got one last year (in fact, I own o lot of Shimanos, and like
    'em better than anything else). I'd go one size smaller for Bass,
    but if your heart is set on 12#, you'll need something at least
    (!!) this big. Personally, I think 12# is more bait casting size
    (for bass), but you might wanna try a 10# copolymer like TriMax,
    because it will be as strong as regular 12# mono anyway.
     As I said, I've used Shimanos on Bass and Steelhead, and they just
    "take a lickin' and keep on tickin'".

1026.2Shimano - a good choiceSALEM::DUMONTTue Mar 14 1989 12:5827
                             -< A wise choice indeed >-

    I also fish Shimano rod & reels, I use the GTX models and like a
    an oversized model (the 3000 series). The model you are looking
    at is an excellent size in my opinion. The 2500 will handle 10 lb
    test or less very well.

    You may want to consider calling BASS pro shops and get last years
    GTX model 2500 (I believe they still have them). The price will
    be about 1 or 2 dollars more than this years CX models. The only
    differance being an extra ball bearing in the GTX.

    Also you may want to consider, based on what you plan to use it
    for, whether you want a self centering trigger bail or not.
    If you plan to use it as a general purpose reel the trigger bail
    is hard to beat, it's quick and easy. If you plan to use it for
    worm and/or jig fishing think about the non-centering bail. The
    bail on this model will stay in position when performing a hard
    hook set, where the potential is a complete revolution on the
    self centering bail (or you coordinate your bail back to the
    center location before the set). This can tend to through you off
    balance on the spur of a moment.

    In either case (I don't think the difference is monumental) Shimano
    is a hard product to beat - You won't go wrong.

    Good Luck.

    I'm on my third Shimano, the latest one was a special deal with
    Bass-Pro, buy a rod at list price, in my case I got the Bionic Blade
    IM6 Graphite for $59, and get last years GTX2500 for $9 thats right
    NINE BUCKS, I just couldn't pass up that deal.
    I also have a GTX2000 and a Black Magnum bait caster.

    I think when you get into the higher lines of reels all the
    manufacturers put out good stuf, be it Diawa, Abu , Shimano, etc.....

1026.4- FWIW -CSSE::SANDERThu Mar 23 1989 13:0618
    Have a GTX2500-SS(standard bail). I bought it last year when Northern
    Bass Supply had an in-store sale. I had a Custom X 1000 that has given
    me great service over the last couple of years, and plus what I
    read in this file were key factors in my decision. If my GTX2500 were
    to fall over board I would be pissed, but I would go buy another.

    I use it mosly for Gitzit, small worm and grub fishing on either
    a 5'3" or a 6'6" rod.

    Have fun making your selection. For what these things cost deciding
    on make and model should be half the fun of making a purchase. As was
    stated in -1, there are a number of good ones. If you can get one with
    an IM6 rod for $68, then go for it!

    Good Luck.

1026.5Is there anything else besides Shimano ?IVOGUS::SHORTThu Mar 30 1989 12:417
    I own a CX-2500 I love it.... but then again I am very biased when
    it comes to Shimano. I have neverd had a problem with anything
    i have boughten with a Shimano name.

    good fishing...

1026.61990 Shimano Spinning Reels.HYEND::J_BORZUMATOTue Aug 28 1990 13:0444
                        Shimano Reels

    I searched the directory can't find "reels", Mr. Moderator
    please move this if you need.

    Last spring i decided i needed a new spinning reel, for the Salt.
    I went to my local tackle shop that sells practicly all brands,
    they recommended the Shimano line, due to superior quality.

    I've used it quite a few times, and they were right.
    Its light, smooth, comfortable grip a great reel.

    There's one caveat, the model i own is a Baitrunner 3500,
    All of the models in the line are identical except for there
    size. The caveat is the design. The nut in front of the spool
    that holds the spool and drag nut on extends quite a ways
    out from the spool, and if the line has the slightest twist
    in it, it will catch the nut, snag the drag nut, and wind
    around on the spool shaft. Problem is that it happens so
    fast, cause you don't expect it, the line gets destroyed.
    I'm on my 4th spool this season.

    Well enough is enough. I went back to my local tackle
    shop, only to find out that this is defineitely a problem
    they have been hearing about. I checked with another,
    same story.

    I called Bucko's but they wern't sure what they could do
    in this situation, "send it down and we'll look at it"
    I'm never happy with these interim solutions.
    I called Shimano, at the beginning they acted a little
    suprised, but after explaining to them that it is commonly
    know in this area, that these reels are problems,
    they admitted they were, and will take the reel back,
    and completely retrofit it to make it look like the
    ones that are on the the shelves today. The only original
    item being returned to me, will be the housing.

    If you own one, beware, if you're having a problem with
    one, your not alone..
