1023.0. "In Search of SLABs " by FDCV27::MARTIN () Fri Mar 10 1989 15:55

    I plan to go after some spring crappies this year and would like
    to find some good places in central Massachusetts. I'm looking
    for some real 'SLABs'. Does anyone know of some good places for
    me to try?? I'd appreciate any inputs.

    Thanks

1023.1Canobie LakeSALEM::ALLOREAll I want is ONE shot!Mon Mar 13 1989 09:478
          I don't know if this helps as it isn't in Mass. but Canobie
    Lake in Salem N.H. is full of the damn things now! I don't know
    how many my buddy and I caught and released in there last year. I
    personally don't care for them. They just kind of drag along the
    surface when you reel 'em in. I guess they could be fun on ultra-
    light gear.

1023.2Crappie fishman needs help!AIMHI::EALYMon Mar 13 1989 11:099
    Canobie lake in Salem N.H sound like the water supply for the
    town of Salem. Is there any boat restriction or town requirements
    arownd gas motors? This would be ideal place, and very convenient.
    Are you sure these are black crappie and not sunfish, bluegill?
    I'm one of those southern fisherman who would love to find a northern
    hot spot that holes black crappie. Thanks for all your help in advance.

1023.3Crappie....SALEM::ALLOREAll I want is ONE shot!Mon Mar 13 1989 12:2913
                Canobie lake is the water supply for Salem but you
    can run boats in it. You can't swim or ski that's all. The town
    of Windham has the only boat ramp though so if you have a big
    boat it may be tricky to get into. We use a car-topper with an
    electric motor. Salem built a small parking area to accomadate
    fisherman right next to the pumping house on N. Policy St. We
    put in there.
                They are definately crappie. Arlington Pond, which
    isn't far from Canobie, holds them also. If you want more info
    let me know.

    Any more info on where crappie can be caught in NH?

    Canobie Lake would be nice but although there is a ramp, there is NO
    parking.

    I tasted crappie for the first time this past Monday night, and they
    were great! However the pond I caught them is private and inaccessable
    (accept on rare occasions). I'd like to find another spot where they
    could be caugh and eaten.

    (The Nashua River in Nashua has lots of them but than cannot be eaten.)

 Nh crappie spots:

 Arlington Mill Reservior - Salem
 Balch Pond - Wakefield
 Canobie Lake - Windham
 Crystal Lake - Manchester
 Horseshoe Pond - Merrimack
 Lovewell Pond - Nashua
 Robinson Pond - Hudson
 Scobie Pond - Londonderry

 Also- Pennichuk reservoir, in Nashua, has the biggest slabs in the state IMO.
it is massively underfished (presumably due to the laws against trespassing).
I fished there numerous times as a kid, and caught some really big ones there.
1023.7Conneticut River North of LebanonCSMET2::WOODFri Aug 31 1990 13:599
    The stretch of the Conetticut river around Orford had bunches
    of them a few years back. We also caught some big Northerns, and
    lot's of pickeral....supposedly there are Walleyes in that area
    too, but we didn't catch any...There was a public ramp on the NH
    side, but I can't recall the name of the town that it was in...A
    good map should show it. It's probably not to far from where you'll
    be next weekend....

    I don't think you can eat the fish out of Horsehoe in Merrimack.
    Where is Lovewell in Nashua?
    Can the fish out of Robinson be eaten?
    How about the others?

    Yea, I too fished the Pennichuck when I was a kid (around 11-12) I
    recall catching pickeral but not much else, of course this had
    evreything to do with the fact that we had no clue what we were doing
    and no one to coach us. 8^)

    re.-1

    I just glanced at the map and Orford appears to be approx 40miles south
    of where we'll be, so I'm not sure if we'll make it or not, but thanks,
    we'll keep it in mind.

 re: Lovewell

 I'm not sure but I think it's near the police station. I'm pretty sure you
don't want to eat fish outta there, though.

 You can eat fish out of Robinson.

 I just entered the places that hold crappie from the "recommended fishing
waters" list.

1023.10Parking at CanobieSALEM::ALLOREAll I want is ONE shot!Tue Sep 04 1990 12:016
              Don,
       There is parking at Canobie. You simply put in your boat then have
    your partner drive your vehicle and trailer over to the Salem parking
    area. Then you motor over there and pick him up. Simple....

    Tim Lucia and I *tried* to launch at Canobie on Saturday morning...

    The lake appears to be approx. 5' below normal. I had heard that
    launch was tough normally, because it was so shallow. But it was
    impossible. We backed in half way across the lake (ok, I'm exagerating,
    slightly) and the transom barely got wet. We debated just leaving the
    boat on the trailor and driving the truck around. 8^) But we decided to
    go to Robinson Pond instead.

    We spoke to a couple fishing from a canoe who appeared to be crappie
    experts (compared to us). They said the crappie fishing was real tough
    since this cold weather hit, but they had caught and released a couple
    in the last hour or so. Nice folks. They showed us what they were using
    and told us how to catch them. It didn't help much, we couldn't catch a
    single crappie. They managed to catch 5-6 more within the next few
    hours, which they kept and gave to us to bring home.

    I ate the fish, they were good. And I'm still alive. So I'd say you
    can eat the fish from there.

Yes, it was a bit weird looking through the windshield of the Don Mac mobile
and seeing 30-40' of water between you and the launch...

    re: .11

    	Funny, the last few days I've been catching LOTS of crappie.
    	Yesterday, I caught and released 25 in 2 hours. I've been using
    	small white grubs on a 1/16 oz. jig. Unfortunatly, I've been
    	fishing in the Assabet River - I wouldn't even think about eating
    	a fish from there!!
