1004.0. "V hull vrs. Flat bottom,which is best?" by LUDWIG::MATTSON () Tue Feb 28 1989 08:13

    Guys,

I have another question concerning new boats. What's the difference
on fishing with a V hull style bottom compared to the Jon Boat style
bottom that's on most of the Aluminum boats I'm looking into? I'm
told that a V hull cuts the water better but is less stable when
you stand in it. I'm told the flat bottom style is much stabler
when you stand on it but rides rougher in choppy water. I'm told
a V hull is better in deeper water and you don't get as wet riding
around in it. I'm told a flat bottom boat floats in shallower water.
Is one easier than the other to get onto a trailer. Also the flat
bottom boats I'm looking into the most are the Sea Nymphs, they advertise
them as 6 degree v-bottom v-bow. Does anybody own one with this
style hull or has anyone ridded in one like this.
Any replies would be greatly appreciated and get me closer to
    buying that new boat.

    					thanks,
    						Gary

Gary, you just summed up most of the differences. I wouldn't be
concerned about the v-hull not being stable enough to stand in though.
I have a small `14ft V and it's plenty stable to stand up and fish
in -- and I believe you'd be looking at something larger than what
I have. The flat bottom hull is alot lower to the water than most
aluminum v hulls, the biggest advantage there (to me) is that you
won't be blown around by the wind as much and you don't have
to reach down 4 feet to lip a bass. However the v hull is suited
much better for big water. Your the one who knows where and how
you'll be fishing. Just match the boat to the type of fishing that
you'll be doing and the type of water that you'll be fishing.

If you plan on doing alot of bass fishing on big water, and maybe
some occasional trolling for trout/salmon than I'd reccomend a V
hull. However if you'll be spending all your time bass fishing on
small water than the flat bottom may be better suited for your needs.

Somewhere a few notes back I started a note to get people's opinion
on what makes a good general purpose fishing boat (936.*). That
may be of some help too.

    Good Luck, donmac

Gee I didn't think of that. Let me see two side by side, put a piece
of canvas across them,HEY I've made a Bassin catamoran. Think I
can market it? NAW that's what they make them Bassin Pontoons for.
O well back to the drawing board.
