Can't help much 'cause I have the Evinrude and it's no more weedless
than yer Johnson. I have found that sometimes, after passing through
a weedbed and getting clogged, a fast burst of reverse clears most
of the weeds. But, a prolonged pass through the cabbage patch will
ultimately stall me right out. I do have the handle version and
can say it is no better than your description as far as having to
frequently adjust the direction to stay on course ... my boat has
a lot of freeboard and is extremely wind-sensitive. An added danger
is having to lean over to reach for the handle ... more than once,
I have almost been pitched overboard as I leaned when a wake/wave
hit simultaneously. I know I could concoct a makeshift extension
(or buy ready-made) ... it would be worth a lot if it kept me high
and dry just once.
I know there's gotta be a solution that is closer to the ideal than
what I have. I just don't wanna invest another $3-500.

| With my 28lb MinnKkota 565 bow mount, grabbing the rope and pulling
the unit just out of the water and pressing the switch on 5th speed
usually sends most of the gunk flying (on me sometimes)... donmac

| I have the Evinrude 12/24 volt bow mount on my bassboatand had the
same problem with weeds until I purshased the weedless prop from
an OMC dealer . This option works very well , I like the slop and
this works fine for me . The prop costs 14-15$ and is well worth
it . If your motor is too small for the load it won't make a lot
of difference though and probably continue to bog down .

| First - I didnt realize OMC MADE a weedless prop. You can bet one
is on my shopping list - besides I could keep the existing one for
a spare. -- You gotta understand - the current prop is so un-weedless
I usually after fishing do all the normal maintainance - which includes
removing the prop (usually AGAIN), removing all the weeds and
regreasing the spindle. Its hard on us old guys - especially if
we have hangovers - while fishing, leaning out over the front of
the boat, pull the cotter pin, remove the prop WITHout dropping
the shear pin into the drink, cleaning the spindle, and then getting
the prop LINED (Grrrrr) up to get back on...
OMC DONT GOT NO REVERSE - wish it did. Guess for the pupose of buying
again. Your list of what to look for; Weedless, reverse, stable
steering.
Thanks for responses. The steering 'torque' problem is you have
to contantly look at the trolling motor to see where its pointed.
Not paying attention, even tho your foot is on the control, will
have you going in a different direction because the control position
changes with the running of the electric. (Your foot is moving and
you dont realize it.)

Ya know, I had the same problem with my MinnKota until I busted the little
direction indicator knob (on the MinnKota it's like an old radio volume control
knob) with an errant cast of a spinnerbait (made a terrible rats nest in my
baitcaster). Well being the lazy slob that I am I never got around to
replacing the indicator. You'd be surprised at how sensitive you get to the
position of your foot and the direction you're traveling when you don't have
any other 'crutches' to lean on. It's sort of like touch typing, as long as
you keep looking at your fingers, you'll never really learn the keyboard.
Try pasteing a piece of cardboard over the arrow for awhile (give it a month
or so) and see if you still feel the same way. The first few times you'll get
all screwed up, but it doesn't take long before it's second nature....

| Well here is an up date on the weedless electric prop issue. I dont
need to buy a Weedless prop. The one I have IS weedless. Or its
sold as such. According to the book - i went back and read my
book/brochure/directions - the model I own is weedless. I honestly
have not been to a dealer to ask for one I wanted to figure out
size/model I had and the darn thing is weedless. I buying a spare anyway
- hey - I have spares of ALL my lures, dont you? If I find out Im
wrong - Ill report back. Dont get upset if you see me spinning your
electric props and asking questions.
