995.0. "Cod fishing tourney or whatever" by KRAPPA::KEYWORTH (John X2784 WFO/C5) Tue Feb 21 1989 11:42

I believe that I have a good opportunity to arrange several Cod
fishing charters at a reasonable price. The charters would be on
a weekday (tuesday, wednesday, or thursday) and would be with Captain
Bill's out of Gloucester, Mass. I've been chartering with them for
a few years now with good results and a good crew.

If I had enough interest from different people or groups to take
advantage of this for either their own interest or for some type
of digital tournament I'd be willing to do some negotiating with
Capt. Bill and report back the results here.

Maybe one charter a week could be arranged through the summer months
for noters to get together on. Whatever you come up with. Let me
    know.

    John

P.S. If it's a matter of wanting to run a charter yourself, I'll
put all the info here that need for you to do that of send it to
    you if you prefer.

I'd be interested in a few trips during May-early June and Sept-
Oct. I find cod fishing in Late June through late Aug. to
    be very spotty.

995.2Is it to early to be thinking about thisKRAPPA::KEYWORTHJohn X2784 WFO/C5Tue Feb 28 1989 08:2523
re .1 Those times of year would be fine. The reason I thought I
could get a good price was that with the increase in the number
of boats in the charter business, a number of the boats sit idle
for a day or two in the middle of the week. I thought if we could
present a package of 5 to 10 charters for the summer, on those idle
days, they might give us a break on the price. I know the Island
Queen (65' and holds 40 - 50 people) will be $775.00 this year on
a weekday. That's only $26.00 each if 30 people went.

Are we the only two Cod fishermen OUT Therrrre... Do you need more
info or is it total lack of interest. Or do you think I'm going
to get something out of it? We'll no, the guy isn't related in any
way. He's just a good captain that I'd like to see get some more
business. As far as getting something out of it, the only thing
I'm looking for is getting him to run something like an overnighter
out to Georges Banks or maybe giving me a break on a marathon trip,
nothing more. Did I mention that if you run the charter for your
group and you get a certain number of people (I think it's 30) to
go, you get to go FREE.

    Good fishing
    John

995.3Last attempt. No cheering please. :^)KRAPPA::KEYWORTHJohn X2784 WFO/C5Wed Mar 01 1989 08:3214
Just read a message from a fellow noter that might help me
pull my foot out of my mouth and say what I want. :^)

What I was hoping for is that 4 or 5 people besides myself would
like to run a cod charter or two this year, it doesn't have to be
a mid-week day. I prefer fridays myself to give me a chance to recover
from the long trip. I understand that people have lost money on
these ventures in the past and that this may be a reason for people
shying away from it. I'll tell you what I do to arrange a charter
without loosing any money. And how we get people for the boat.

First of all I hand out an information sheet like this.

Well that didn't work. I tried to add a file into my reply showing
the handout. I guess I'll have to type it in unless there's another
way. But it'll have to wait untill friday morning.

    Sorry about this mess.

lights and go about 1/4 mile until you see some grey oil tanks on
the left and a gas station on the right. Pull in behind the oil
tanks and the boat is right there. The name of the dock is Rose's
	      Warf.

A change of cloths for after the trip
              Camera (in Plastic Bag)

	      Lunch
Dramamine if you think you might need it.

              Money for:

Food (none served on board) Sinkers about $1.00 if you lose it
Tolls about $5.00 Jigs about $8.00 if you lose it
                 Ice for Cooler Gas
Fish Cleaning $.25 to $.50 each fish.
Tackle is included in the trip price.

BOAT RULES: 1. The Captain's Word is LAW.
              2. Secure your GEAR under a Bench so as not to interfere
with the Crew's (or your) Safety.
              3. The Boat leaves at 6:00 AM Sharp ! If you want to eat
breakfast there, there is a restaurant next door that
is opening at 5:00 AM for us.
              4. The Boat Limit for beer, per person, is one (1) 6-Pack.
NO hard liquor or drugs allowed !!

There will be 32 spots designated on the boat for people to fish at.
When you pay for your trip you will be able to pick the spot you want
from those that are left. I think this will give everyone plenty of
    room and eliminate any misunderstandings.

I need $ 28.00 by Thursday, July 29th. The pool will be another $2.00
if you wish to enter. If you have money in the pool and can't
go on the trip, I will refund your share of the pool to you.
NO OTHER REFUNDS unless the Captain cancels the trip or we don't get
enough people for the trip (30). It is your responsibility to sell your
spot on the boat if you wish to regain your money.

And as I give them the sheet I make sure they understand that this is a
fishing trip not a booze cruize.

As far as getting enough people for the trip that's easy. I split the boat
down the middle lengthways. I get the people (friends, relatives, friends
of relatives, wives, girlfriends etc.) for the port side and a friend of
mine gets the people for the starboard side.

Hope this helps someone in the future when they try to organize a trip.

I'll be running a charter or two this year (probably early June and/or Sept.)
and if nothing comes of this the two people who have replied so for will
certainly be welcome to come with us. I'll let you know the date when I set it.

John

there were video tapes of some pretty huge ones...

Would you explain the charges for 'tolls' and 'gas'. If we're
paying $x for the trip, why the extra for these? If this is actually
the case, count me out, I'll stick with Yankee Fleet!

Don't forget I live in westerm Mass. Tolls and Gas are rough
figures for us to travel to gloucester.
Also don't forget that it was an example of a previous trip.

Ok John, now I see. I thought you were saying that everyone had
to chip in for gas for the boat or something.
