981.0. "Worm Rattles ?? fool fish or fishermen ??" by SA1794::CUZZONES (Surfcasting with the Alien) Fri Feb 10 1989 12:29

The other night, one of you mentioned worm rattles. I have seen
ads this winter for a plastic worm with a hole in its tail and an
insertable plastic rattle (looks like a small splitshot in a clear
bubble). Rather than try a new brand of plastic bait, I ordered
a package of another brand of worm rattles from Bass Pro. They
are a small tube, pointed at one end, with 3 or so rattles inside.
I may have wasted $2.39 ... it won't be the first time I threw money
away on some device that doesn't catch more fish.

Thinking about it afterwards, I'm not sure where the rattle goes
(my current brand of worms is not anatomically correct).

Anyone out there have an opinion or advice on these things?

981.1Nothin' New Under 'Ol Sol...BOSHOG::VARLEYFri Feb 10 1989 15:039
The "rattle" concept first got hot in the early '70s, but it never
did much for me (probably because I'm a lousy worm fisherman). Make
a small cut in a soft conventional worm and you can force the rattle
in if you're careful, and if the rattles are the same size I have.
They work on plugs too, but drill the hole in the center of the
plug, and seal it with waterproof epoxy. Some guys even glued 'em
across the underside of a plug "bill", or "lip".

981.2Texas Ratt'lers!!!SALEM::EASTERFri Feb 10 1989 16:1811
I came across those little dudes last yeay while on R&R down in
Texas. I was instructed by one of the natives that he makes a small
incision on the lower end of the collar of a worm (thats the smooth
part about an inch or so from the head) and insert. This can also
be effective (he said) when used with plastic craw and grub baits.
The explanation given for it's use was that as the lure is "hopped"
along the bottom the rattle will mimic a crayfish snaping it's claws
to try and ward off danger. Sounded good to me but I haven't put
it to much use yet. Maybe I'll try them this spring.

    Good luck and regards, John

I've used them down here in the south and they do seem to draw a
few more strikes especially if your fishing in muddy water. I stick
them just above the egg sack on my jelly worms and also super glue
them to some of my jigs.. It's kinda like Fish Fomular..it can't
    hurt..

.If they dont seem to productive on a worm dont throw'em out
just drop one in your favorite beverage (coors) and when it rattles well
just figure when you here it you have 2 more minutes to refill

I think I need to dedicate this reply, to a long lost worker

981.6how Paul Elias rigged the rattleHPSCAD::WHITMANAcid rain burns my BASSMon Mar 13 1989 09:5510
On this week's BASSMASTER program (TNN) Paul Elias showed his method
for inserting these rattles. He took his hook & made an insertion hole
(kind of stabbed the worm with the pointy end of the hook) about 1/4 inch
from the head end of the worm (he removed the hook back out of the hole). He
shoved the rattle in the hole he had just made, forcing it all the way in by
again using the hook point to push the rattle. Once the rattle was completely
concealed inside the worm, he rigged the worm Texas style such that the rattle
was located between the eye of the hook and the point of the hook.
